PIKOFF HELSINKI—HELSINGFORS 1 938 HELSINGFORS 1938 FRENCKELLSKA TRYCKERI AKTIEBOLAGET Företal.

A densely pitted crater-related Revised 29 April 2012 unit has been identified in images of 204 craters from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This sample of Accepted 9 May 2012 craters are nearly equally distributed between the two hemispheres, spanning from 53°Sto62°N latitude. Available online 24 May 2012 They range in diameter from 1 to 150 km, and are found at elevations between À5.5 to +5.2 km relative to the martian datum. • Crater Geometry and Ejecta Thickness of the Martian Impact Crater Tooting
Meteoritics & Planetary Science 42, Nr 9, 1615–1625 (2007) Abstract available online at http://meteoritics.org Crater geometry and ejecta thickness of the Martian impact crater Tooting Peter J. MOUGINIS-MARK and Harold GARBEIL Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, University of Hawai‘i, Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96822, USA (Received 25 October 2006; revision accepted 04 March 2007) Abstract–We use Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) topographic data and Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) visible (VIS) images to study the cavity and the ejecta blanket of a very fresh Martian impact crater ~29 km in diameter, with the provisional International Astronomical Union (IAU) name Tooting crater. This crater is very young, as demonstrated by the large depth/ diameter ratio (0.065), impact melt preserved on the walls and floor, an extensive secondary crater field, and only 13 superposed impact craters (all 54 to 234 meters in diameter) on the ~8120 km2 ejecta blanket. Because the pre-impact terrain was essentially flat, we can measure the volume of the crater cavity and ejecta deposits. Tooting crater has a rim height that has >500 m variation around the rim crest and a very large central peak (1052 m high and >9 km wide). Crater cavity volume (i.e., volume below the pre-impact terrain) is ~380 km3 and the volume of materials above the pre-impact terrain is ~425 km3. The ejecta thickness is often very thin (<20 m) throughout much of the ejecta blanket. There is a pronounced asymmetry in the ejecta blanket, suggestive of an oblique impact, which has resulted in up to ~100 m of additional ejecta thickness being deposited down-range compared to the up-range value at the same radial distance from the rim crest.

Today millions of tourists walk the freedom trail with Paul Revere’s famous ride galloping through their heads. Little do they know that 85 years after the fateful lamp was lit in Old North Church, an entirely different kind of ride was taking place in the heart of Boston’s Downtown Crossing. This ride was performed by a woman seated in a nautilus-shaped boat being pulled by a beluga whale through the largest tank in the first aquarium in the United States.

  • Noah: the Man, the Ark, the Flood
Digging Deeper Links for Noah: The Man, The Ark, The Flood SESSION ONE: NOAH THE MAN The Bible Trumps Everything—Even Creation Science: This article explains the danger of clinging too tightly to models arising from Creation science. It examines some early Creation science models that have given way over the years and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of current models describing the flood. Flood! This article briefly surveys some of the numerous flood accounts in ancient civilizations. Noah’s Flood: the Gilgamesh Epic and Genesis: Some scholars argue Genesis borrowed its flood account from the Akkadian Epic of Gilgamesh. This article challenges that assertion and provides an alternate view. Living for 900 Years: Today few people reach the age of 120 years. We’re understanding more … but, with new research, can we live longer? Fascinating new information about how and why we age casts fresh light on the long lifespans of pre-flood people. Decreased lifespans: Have we been looking in the right place? This article looks at some possible reasons for the decrease in longevity after the flood. Meeting the Ancestors This article shares a fascinating observation about the patriarchal lists of early Genesis. Extreme Aging Tragically, some children age at tremendous rates, resulting in an average lifespan of thirteen years. SESSION TWO: THE ARK Thinking Outside the Box This webpage takes an in depth look at the ark and how it safely brought Noah, his family, and all those animals through the Flood’s devastation. Where does the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod stand on Genesis 1? This page contains the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s official doctrinal position.

Abstract Geological processes, including impact cratering, are fundamental throughout rocky bodies in the solar system. Studies of terrestrial impact structures, like the Ries impact structure, Germany, have informed on impact cratering processes – e.g., early hot, hydrous degassing, autometamorphism, and recrystallization/devitrification of impact glass – and products – e.g., impact melt rocks and breccias comprised of clay minerals. Yet, clay minerals of authigenic impact origin remain understudied and their formation processes poorly-understood. This thesis details the characterization of impact-generated clay minerals at Ries, showing that compositionally diverse, abundant Al/Fe/Mg smectite clays formed through these processes in thin melt-bearing breccia deposits of the ejecta, as well as at depth.
