Variation in spring phenology – like tree budburst – affects the structure of insect communities, but impacts of autumn phenology have been neglected. Many plant species have recently delayed their autumn phenology, and the timing of leaf senescence may be important for herbivorous insects. 2. This study explored how an insect herbivore community associated with Quercus robur is influenced by variation in autumn phenology. For this, schools were askedto record, across the range of oak in Sweden, the autumn phenology of oaks and to conduct a survey of the insect community. 3. To tease apart the relative impacts of climate from that of tree phenology, regional tree phenology was first modelled as a function of regional climate, and the tree-specific deviation from this relationship was then used as the metric of relative tree-specific phenology. 4. At the regional scale, a warmer climate postponed oak leaf senescence. This was also reflected in the insect herbivore community: six out of 15 taxa occurred atahigher incidence and five out of 18 taxa were more abundant, in locations with a warmer climate. Similarly, taxonomic richness and herbivory were higher in warmer locations. -

However, presence of exotic species might reduce the interaction number for native species, which would lead to changes in the specialization of plant-galling networks. In this study, we use network metrics to describe, for the first time, the structure of a network of gall-inducing insects associated to ornamental host plants. We found that the plant-galling network has a low-connected structure and is more modular than expected by chance. Native insect herbivores were significantly more frequent on native host plant species, while exotic herbivores occurred mostly on exotic host plant species. On the other hand, the number of interactions between insect herbivores and native or exotic plant species did not vary. Our findings show that plant-galling networks are very specialized and structured independently of exotic species presence. -

The present fauna of the family Cecidomyiidae Macquart, 1838 in Europe includes 1800 valid species in 270 genera. It is divided into three subfamilies: Lestremiinae Rondani, 1840 with 280 species in 33 genera, Porricondylinae Enderlein, 1936 with 310 species in 62 genera and Cecidomyiinae Rondani, 1840 with 1210 species in 175 genera. Only the last subfamily includes gall-causing and plant-inhabiting species. For the family Cecidomyiidae, Europe is the most species-rich continent of the world. On average, each gall midge genus contains 6,6 species. The most species-rich genus is Dasineura Rondani, 1840, with 230 species, followed by Contarinia Rondani, 1860, with 135 species. On the basis of the larval feeding habits, the family Cecidomyiidae may be divided into three biological groups: 51% of species are phytophagous, 39% mycophagous, 8% zoophagous and the biology of about 2% remains unknown. All species of the subfamilies Lestremiinae and Porricondylinae are mycophagous. Fundamental sources for evaluation of the family Cecidomyiidae in Europe are 40,000 records about their occurrence and distribution gathered by the present authors at more than 1850 localities in 17 countries of mainland Europe and nine islands in the Mediterranean at altitudes from sea level up to 2645 m a. -

Plants of The Week » Annual - Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) Snapdragons are in heaven with this recent spell of cool temperatures. These are excellent annuals to fill the void from early April through mid-June, until it gets warmer. Snapdragons prefer full sun and well-drained soil. They are extremely easy to grow from seed and in fact, they sometimes reseed themselves each season. The flowers bloom at the top of the stalks above the plant and have an interesting shape with their puffed petals. I first learned about snapdragons when I was a child visiting my grandma; she showed me the reason they are called snapdragons! If you squeeze the puffy petals, the "dragon's mouth" opens. Colors are red, orange, yellow, violet, white and pink and there are some bi-colored varieties. Deadheading can keep them blooming a little bit throughout the summer. When fall comes, they will start blooming again and go until a good freeze. Snapdragons grow around 1 - 3.5' tall depending on the variety; there are dwarf, compact varieties as well as taller varieties that make great cut flowers. 'Rocket' has been around quite a while and is excellent to cut for vases. -
