  • Textual Spectacle: the Transmedial Storyworld of Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto
The Concept Album as Visual-Sonic- Textual Spectacle: The Transmedial Storyworld of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto Lori Burns University of Ottawa [email protected] Abstract This paper studies the elaboration of the concept album by means of multimodal promotional strategies that include the concert tour, music videos, books, as well as other digital and print materials. Adopting the perspective that the meaning of a concept album emerges in and through a potentially complex network of materials, we can receive and understand concept album storytelling to operate according to multimedial, intermedial and transmedial contexts. This study examines the transmedial storyworld of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto concept spectacle as it is developed in and through the material content of the original album, the Coldplay: Live 2012 (Coldplay 2012c) concert film, as well as the paraphonographic materials that extend Mylo Xyloto into a variety of media. KEYWORDS: Concept album, spectacle, multimodality, intermediality, transmediality Introduction In the context of the new millennial industry of popular music, artists from a variety of genres rely heavily upon current technologies and social media platforms to develop elaborate promotional strategies, thus expanding the idea of the concept album to the concert tour, music videos, books, and a range of supplementary materials. With such an approach, the concept album can be seen to extend across multiple media formats in supplementary materials and live IASPM@Journal vol.6 no.2 (2016) Journal of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music ISSN 2079-3871 | DOI 10.5429/2079-3871(2016)v6i2.6en | www.iaspmjournal.net 92 Lori Burns performances.

  • Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends (2008) - Bajta | Tri Doline V Eni Bajti | Koroški Spletni Časopis
Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (2008) - Bajta | Tri doline v eni Bajti | Koroški spletni časopis Prispeval Tadej Breznik Četrtek, 22 Januar 2009 21:00 Coldplay so junija izdali svoj četrti studijski album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. V komadih še vedno prevladuje eksperimentiranje s takšnimi in drugačnimi kitarskimi zvoki , v ospredju pa so predvsem klaviaturski in sintetični zvoki.

“Can Anybody Fly This Thing?” Appropriations of History in Reenactments of Operation Market Garden Wolfgang Hochbruck A modern military transport plane flies over a field, parachutists jumping out of its rear hatch. It is followed by a World War II vintage twin- engine bomber. Above the noise of the engines, the guitar of Jonny Buckland is heard, and then the voice of Coldplay lead vocalist Chris Martin with the first line of “High Speed:” “Can anybody fly this thing?” (Hemmen 2009). The video by one Paul Hemmen is one of about forty YouTube amateur videos that were sampled for this study. All of them cover 21st century commemorative reenactments of the 1944 World War II airborne Operation Market Garden,1 and all of them make use of para- filmic techniques, and a musical score. Fittingly enough, the album on which the Coldplay song appeared was named Parachutes (2000). It is the tentative link between commemoration, reenactment, filmic, and musical culture that the present essay is interested in. “History’s affective turn,” as Vanessa Agnew has called it (Agnew 2007), has brought individual narra- tive, emotional experience, and affective responses to the forefront of schol- arly historical discourses. As a side effect of this turn, scholars have become more aware of the realm of citizen scholars, aficionados, and mere hobbyists, who take history into their own hands, and re- stage historic events as reen- actments, and then upload them to YouTube. However, as I will try to show, whereas there is a moment of reappropriation of both theatre and history in these activities (cf.

THE ORIGINS OF WESTERN MUSIC AND ITS INFLUENCE ON MODERN POPULAR MUSIC: TEACHING MUSIC THROUGH A MUSICAL EXPLORATION OF SEVEN COUNTRIES By Johanna KateLyn Hatt Liberty University A MASTER’S CURRICULUM PROJECT PRESENTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN MUSIC EDUCATION THE ORIGINS OF WESTERN MUSIC AND ITS INFLUENCE ON MODERN POPULAR MUSIC: TEACHING MUSIC THROUGH A MUSICAL EXPLORATION OF SEVEN COUNTRIES by Johanna KateLyn Hatt A Curriculum Project Presented in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Music Education Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA December 2018 APPROVED BY: Rebecca Watson, D.M.A., Committee Advisor Stephen Müller, PhD. (ABD), Associate Dean of the School of Music, Committee Reader Vernon M. Whaley, PhD., Dean of the School of Music 2 ABSTRACT The topics of music history and music appreciation cover a wide range of composers and musical contributions that at times, can be overwhelming to a student who does not have any musical knowledge. Through limiting the music appreciation course to the discussion of composers’ works from various countries, students are able to learn about the important contributions those composers and countries had to music, including modern popular music. This topic will bring value to the field of music education as it offers an alternative approach to the traditional method of teaching a music history course. With this holistic approach to the instruction of music history, students will be able to see the social and cultural impacts on the compositions and composers of various countries. Using their critical thinking skills, students will be able to connect the influence that compositions from various countries have had on modern music through analysis, classroom discussion, and personal projects.
