COLDPLAY A TIMELINE SUBJECT The subject of my interactive data visualization will be a timeline of the band Coldplay. About Coldplay: Genre: Alternative Coldplay is a British rock band formed in 1996 by lead vocalist Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland at University College London. It was later joined by Will Champion as a drummer and Guy Berryman as a bassist. After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single "Yellow," Coldplay quickly became one of the biggest bands of the new millennium, honing a mix of introspective Brit-pop and anthemic rock that landed the British quartet a near-permanent residence on record charts worldwide. With 4 albums, many awards and tours, Coldplay is my favorite band! While researching for topics for this project, I came across many intriguing visualizations of timelines of bands, which is when I realized Coldplay doesn't have one. This visualization will be different from others in terms of design and interactions. The interactions on the page will reveal to the viewer, sorted by date, the important events of the band along with videos, images and graphics. The design will be simple and functional yet abstract. ! DATA I was lucky to find first hand data from the coldplay website itself. It contains hand written notes by band members, voice recordings, images and videos. However this information is only until 2010. From 2010 onwards I will have to find information from here. TECHNOLOGY I will be creating a webpage and hence I will be using HTML, CSS and Javascript. I will also be using Illustrator and Photoshop for my designs. PLAN & CHALLENGES My plan will be to first accumulate all the data, parse it, edit it, and ready to visualize. Then I will design the timeline and then make the webpage with the interactions. The challenge for me in this project will be to make it interactive, having only a limited knowledge of Javascript. However, since my interactions are based on click and reveal, there are tutorials online that I can learn from. Another thing I want to add is motion graphics. DESIGN COMP DESIGN COMP 2.

The Concept Album as Visual-Sonic- Textual Spectacle: The Transmedial Storyworld of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto Lori Burns University of Ottawa [email protected] Abstract This paper studies the elaboration of the concept album by means of multimodal promotional strategies that include the concert tour, music videos, books, as well as other digital and print materials. Adopting the perspective that the meaning of a concept album emerges in and through a potentially complex network of materials, we can receive and understand concept album storytelling to operate according to multimedial, intermedial and transmedial contexts. This study examines the transmedial storyworld of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto concept spectacle as it is developed in and through the material content of the original album, the Coldplay: Live 2012 (Coldplay 2012c) concert film, as well as the paraphonographic materials that extend Mylo Xyloto into a variety of media.
