Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends (2008) - Bajta | Tri Doline V Eni Bajti | Koroški Spletni Časopis Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (2008) - Bajta | Tri doline v eni Bajti | Koroški spletni časopis Prispeval Tadej Breznik Četrtek, 22 Januar 2009 21:00 Coldplay so junija izdali svoj četrti studijski album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. Gre za album, za katerega so po pričakovanju Britanci glasovali kot album številka ena, ki vas bo zagotovo uspaval. Mar res uspava? Coldplay, britanski alternativni rock band v postavi Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman in Will Champion ter znani predvsem po komadu, ki jih je lansiral med zvezde - Yellow - in ostalimi prav tako znanimi singli (The Scientist, Clocks, Speed of Sound), so zopet postregli z albumom, na katerem je možno slišati enajst komadov, ki se na uho prepletajo iz enega v drugega, s podobnim »kick beatom« skozi večino pesmi. Sprva (pre)mnogokrat primerjani z U2, so tokrat potegnili vzporednice med njihovo in svojo glasbo. Čeprav na trenutke še vedno zvenijo zelo U2-jevsko, kakopak ne bi, saj je Brian Eno glavni producent albuma, v tem albumu kažejo jasne znake, da so dorasli naslovu ene izmed popularnejših skupin na planetu. Brian Eno, producent mnogih znanih bandov (npr. Talking Heads, U2..), je znova dokazal, da je alternativni rock njegova stroka . V komadih še vedno prevladuje eksperimentiranje s takšnimi in drugačnimi kitarskimi zvoki , v ospredju pa so predvsem klaviaturski in sintetični zvoki. Zelo izrazita je uporaba godal, ki v komadih »Yes« in »Viva La Vida« lepo dopolnjujejo melodijo. Tako bobni in bas linija služita predvsem kot dober podpornik celote, medtem ko vokal ni več tako izrazito visok falzet, kot smo ga bili vajeni npr. na albumu XY, temveč gre vokalna linija mnogokrat v nižji register, kot smo ga vajeni pri Chrisu Martinu. Nekaj delov pesmi na albumu pa je zgolj instrumentalnih, nabitih z energijo prepletajočih se melodij. Kot nakazuje že naslov albuma je tematika albuma tudi smrt, zato so besedila med drugim tudi abstraktna in mnogo bolj vizualna, kot na prejšnjih albumih, in variirajo med tematikami. Vendar imajo pri komadih kot so »42« in »Cemeteries of London« tesnoben pridih in ustvarjajo temačno vzdušje, ki se posledično odraža v celotni luči albuma. Album, kljub temu, da je bil med poslušalci zelo dobro sprejet, pa le ni bil brez incidenta. Naslovna pesem Viva La Vida je ob izdaji kaj hitro doživela razcvet med poslušalci, ki so jo takoj vzeli za hit albuma. S tem pa se zagotovo ne strinja Joe Satriani, saj je mnenja da gre za plagiat njegove pesmi »If I Could Fly« in toži Coldplay za avtorske pravice.     The Concept Album as Visual-Sonic- Textual Spectacle: The Transmedial Storyworld of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto Lori Burns University of Ottawa [email protected] Abstract This paper studies the elaboration of the concept album by means of multimodal promotional strategies that include the concert tour, music videos, books, as well as other digital and print materials. Adopting the perspective that the meaning of a concept album emerges in and through a potentially complex network of materials, we can receive and understand concept album storytelling to operate according to multimedial, intermedial and transmedial contexts. This study examines the transmedial storyworld of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto concept spectacle as it is developed in and through the material content of the original album, the Coldplay: Live 2012 (Coldplay 2012c) concert film, as well as the paraphonographic materials that extend Mylo Xyloto into a variety of media.     Vaes: The Cemeteries of London 202 The Cemeteries of London Guy Vaes Translated from the French by Philip Mosley _____________________________________ Foreword The text that follows this foreword is Guy Vaes’s preface to his photo-essay, The Cemeteries of London (1978), a book dedicated to his widow Lydie and in memory of Stephen Geary (1779-1854), creator of the old Highgate Cemetery. When the author visited London’s Victorian cemeteries in the years preceding the publication of his book, most of these sites were in a sorry state of neglect and disrepair. The tide, however, was about to turn. In 1975 the Friends of Highgate Cemetery was formed, an association that Vaes mentions in his Preface and one that prompted others to follow in later years. In 1981 the architectural historian Hugh Meller published London Cemeteries: An Illustrated Guide and Gazeteer. Invoking the title of the celebrated 1960 Western film, Meller called the group of seven large private cemeteries ‘The Magnificent Seven’ [Abney Park, Brompton, Highgate, Kensal Green, Nunhead, Tower Hamlets, West Norwood]. All seven now belong to the National Federation of Cemetery Friends, though only Highgate and Kensal Green remain open for burials. Lying within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Brompton is run by the Royal Park Service. Abney Park, Nunhead, and Tower Hamlets are now natural woodland nature reserves. Despite restoration work—for instance, by 2001, of the Anglican chapel and fifty monuments at Nunhead—and the efforts of the friends’ associations, all of these sites remain in need of further care and funding. Highgate West is open only for guided tours; Highgate East is open to all.
