It’s so malleable; you Pop Out could hear it in one setting and hate it, vowing to never Archives again let such filth invade your eardrums again. I’m referring to sonic pop by the way. Then, you could hear October 2013 it at a different time, in a different situation, a different September 2013 artist and see something in it that you never August 2013 considered. It’s not just to down to peer pressure, July 2013 either. You could be listening to a song on repeat in the June 2013 May 2013 morning that by night time you can’t stand. Basically, April 2013 music isn’t just a meal in itself, to really enjoy it you March 2013 need to be in the right frame of mind, as well as a February 2013 situation where you can enjoy it. Today the latest 5 January 2013 song EP by Escher’s Enigma floated across my desk entitled From me to There. Combining December 2012 90s alternative rock sounds with lush acoustic pop arrangements, these songs are about the November 2012 relationship between self and world – lovers past and present, fate, and fantasy. Escher’s October 2012 Enigma is a project currently comprised of father/son duo Russ and Brian Miller. They produce September 2012 August 2012 original acoustic pop, arena rock and contemporary rock music as well as covers of classic July 2012 rock and pop songs. When I turned on Escher’s Enigma I actually did not expect what I heard. I June 2012 probably wasn’t giving them the best chance for success as I must be honest. Some more May 2012 modern Contemporary Pop artists are a bit over the top about their sonic mixing and in your April 2012 face sound quality and cheesy writing style. Not that there’s anything wrong with modern Pop, it March 2012 just feels as if they are selling something under a false pretence lacking a real and genuine February 2012 sense of musical inspiration. They are going through the motions. How ironic music lacks January 2012 inspiration. Where am I going with this? None of the above applies to Connecticut based December 2011 November 2011 Escher’s Enigma. As I drifted in and out of uncomfortable sleep, hazy static and sporadic October 2011 bursts of music punctuated my dreams I realized this artist believes every note he played, September 2011 wrote and sang. I played this EP probably 4 times and despite the brutal sludgy of the Brooklyn August 2011 traffic there was something on many of this 5 track collection that soothed my inner skepticism. July 2011 On the second listen, slightly more conscious this time, I began to pick out the sounds June 2011 between Alternative greats like Deep Blue Something, R.E.M., Talking Heads, Barenaked May 2011 Ladies, and They Might Be Giants. However there is also a pop quality to the pieces as well. April 2011 Bending elements of Classic Pop, Singer/Songwriter and Alternative Rock one can’t help but March 2011 February 2011 fall madly in love with Escher’s Enigma. Top Tracks: Drowning in Time, and Choice. Criticism: January 2011 more vocal harmonies and solo segments please. Some aspects of the EP sound a bit December 2010 repetitive.     HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

    JASIAH BIO The era of SoundCloud rap ushered in a golden age of teenage DIY artists who make music on their terms. To grow from the depths of SoundCloud to the mainstream stage, Jasiah used the audio distribution platform to connect with his fans, promoting his music as much as possible. When his self-produced, self-written songs started gaining traction online, it was a stroke of luck that one of those fans was Ugly God. Jasiah remembers when Ugly God Posted his “HAHAHAHAHA” freestyle on Soundcloud. “He was like, ‘The first time I open my DMs to listen to one of y’all wack ass rappers, and its actually a banger,’” He says with a laugh. The reaction was enough reassurance that he was on the right track. Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Jasiah, 22, is unlike any rapper associated with the SoundCloud rap movement. He considers himself to be an artist who can transcend genres. This means he can excel in any category, whether its making screamo songs like “Case 19,” which features Tekashi 6ix9ine, or agro anthems like “Crisis” that contains a familiar Courage the Cowardly Dog sample. The record got him his first music video with hip-hop’s sought-after director Cole Bennett, who shared it on the influential Lyrical Lemonade YouTube page. With over eight million views thus far, it’s clear Jasiah’s music is making an impact. “When I first dropped it, I only had 800 followers on SoundCloud at the time. And it was going up. It had 48,000 plays,” he says.

To do so, I provide both a neo-Aristotelian and biographical criticism of three songs from ye (2018) by Kanye West. Chapters 1 & 2 consider Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author and other landmark papers in rhetorical and literary theory to develop an intrinsic and extrinsic approach to criticizing ye (2018), evident in Tables 1 & 2. Chapter 3 provides the biographical antecedents of West’s life prior to the release of ye (2018). Chapters 4, 5, & 6 supply intrinsic (neo-Aristotelian) and extrinsic (biographical) critiques of the selected artifacts. Each of these chapters aims to address the concerns of one of three guiding questions: which critical approaches prove most useful to the hip-hop consumer listening to this song? How can and should the listener construct meaning? Are there any improper ways to critique and interpret this song? Chapter 7 discusses the variance in each mode of critical analysis from Chapters 4, 5, & 6.
