Dit citaat van Vergilius, letterlijk vertaald “hier en daar verschenen er zwemmers in de immense zee”, schetst uitstekend het voorbije academiejaar. Het was immers een jaar vol beslommeringen en moeilijkheden, maar net zoals Aeneas, de held van het epos, heb ik de veilige thuishaven bereikt. Dit zou echter niet gelukt zijn als ik me niet had kunnen vastklampen aan enkele boeien, die me houvast hebben gegeven. Een woord van dank is dan ook op zijn plaats. In de eerste plaats wil ik mijn promotor, professor Brigitte Meijns, bedanken voor de begeleiding van mijn masterproef. Door haar enthousiasme heb ik drie jaar geleden vol goede moed voor de richting middeleeuwen gekozen, een keuze waar ik absoluut geen spijt van heb. Daarnaast wil ik haar assistenten Jelle Lisson en Ortwin Huysmans bedanken voor de vele aanwijzingen en suggesties. Bovendien wil ik mijn appreciatie uiten voor de mensen van de Historische Kring van Sint- Truiden, in het bijzonder meneer Jo Vanmechelen voor de nuttige publicaties die hij me heeft aangeraden. Samenvatting Volgens de Vita prima sancti Trudonis (784-791) van Donatus werd Trudo geboren in de eerste helft van de zevende eeuw. Het heiligenleven beschrijft hoe hij naar Metz zou zijn getrokken, waar hij tot priester werd gewijd, en hoe Trudo zijn bezittingen schonk aan bisschop Chlodulf van Metz (654/655-670/686). Ten gevolge van deze schenking was de abdij die Trudo oprichtte in Sarchinium (Zerkingen, waar in de elfde eeuw de stad Sint- Truiden ontstond) volgens de Vita prima sancti Trudonis een eigenklooster van de bisschop van Metz in het niet direct aangrenzende bisdom Tongeren-Maastricht (het latere bisdom Luik). Het relaas van Trudo’s schenking in de Vita prima sancti Trudonis werd in de vroege en hoge middeleeuwen door meerdere hagiografen overgenomen en aangepast naargelang hun eigen wensen en intenties. In deze studie trachtte ik om aan de hand van een discoursanalyse de visie van de schrijvers over de relatie tussen de bisschop van Metz en de abdij van Sint- Truiden te achterhalen. Dit onderzoek toonde aan dat er zich drie groepen aftekenden op basis van de herkomst en de motieven van de schrijvers. De eerste groep bestaat uit hagiografische teksten van het bisdom Metz. Daartoe behoort de vermelde Vita prima sancti Trudonis. In dit heiligenleven legitimeerde Donatus, een diaken uit Metz, in opdracht van aartsbisschop Angelram van Metz (784-791) de banden van de bisschop van Metz met de abdij van Sint-Truiden. Daarnaast schreef een anonieme monnik uit de Sint-Arnulfusabdij van Metz in de tiende eeuw of aan het begin van de elfde eeuw de Vita Chlodulphi. Hoewel dat heiligenleven op het eerste zicht eveneens kon dienen als juridisch instrument voor de bisschoppen van Metz, toont de tekstanalyse dat het vooral werd geschreven om de cultus van de heilige bisschop Chlodulf te promoten. De tweede groep bevat hagiografische teksten uit het bisdom Luik. Uit een vergelijking met de Vita prima sancti Remacli, geschreven door een anonieme monnik uit de abdij van Stavelot in de eerste helft van de negende eeuw, blijkt duidelijk hoe Heriger van Lobbes (†1007) in zijn Vita secunda sancti Remacli (972-980) de hypotekst van Donatus aanpaste om de belangen van het bisdom Luik te behartigen. Heriger schreef het heiligenleven in opdracht van bisschop Notger van Luik (972-1008) en ondersteunde daarmee diens politiek ten aanzien van de abdij van Sint-Truiden. De hagiografieën uit het klooster van Sint-Truiden vormen de derde groep. Diederik, de latere abt (1099-1107), herwerkte op aandringen van proost Gerardus (†1093) de Vita prima sancti Trudonis. Het heiligenleven dat hieruit voortkwam, namelijk de Vita secunda sancti Trudonis (1083-1093), trok het gezag van de bisschop van Metz over de abdij in twijfel. De Gesta abbatum Trudonensium van abt Rodulfus (1108-1138) lichten ons in over de context waarin Diederik zijn Vita secunda sancti Trudonis schreef, met name de twisten in de abdij van Sint- Truiden aan het einde van de elfde eeuw, waarin verschillende bisschoppen van Metz een negatieve rol speelden. Inleiding: vita felicissimi patris Trudonis presbiteri “Sint-Truiden – Trudofeesten 2012 – In het licht van Trudo. De Heilige Trudo, die Sint-Truiden ruim 1300 jaar geleden stichtte, wordt om de 7 jaar feestelijk herdacht. De Trudofeesten evolueerden van een indrukwekkende ommegang in de straten naar een volwaardig feestjaar met tentoonstellingen en culturele manifestaties. Sint-Truiden heeft een waardevol religieus verleden en telt tal van historische locaties waar deze tentoonstellingen en manifestaties volledig tot hun recht komen.” Met dit persbericht opende de stad Sint-Truiden het Trudojaar, waarin ze haar stichter met allerlei festiviteiten in de schijnwerper plaatste.1 Als geboren Truienaar wekte deze gebeurtenis mijn interesse voor het hagiografische dossier van de heilige Trudo, dat doorheen de middeleeuwen tot stand kwam. De verscheidene teksten waarin de heilige een prominente rol speelt, vormen samen een complex geheel van betekenislagen en verborgen agenda’s. Die teksten zijn de basis voor mijn masterproef. Vooraleer ik inga op de specifieke aard van het bronnenmateriaal en de onderzoeksvraag, wil ik eerst stilstaan bij enkele methodologische en theoretische kwesties. 1. Het theoretische kader Hagiografie: een definitie Hagiografie betekent letterlijk “geschriften over heiligen”. Het woord is afgeleid van het Grieks: hagios, heilig of heilige, en graphein, schrijven. In the centuries following its composition, this paranetic text became erroneously attributed to Prosper of Aquitaine, the famous defender of Augustine’s doctrine of grace in mid-fifth-century Gaul. Consequently, Pomerius’s text was lent discernible authority, both through Prosper’s well-known connection to Augus- tine as well as through the apparent Augustinianism of the text itself. The De vita contem- plativa was also often paired closely with the work of Gregory the Great, which served to further enhance the importance of the text for Carolingian bishops. As this article argues, Pomerius’s contention, that not only monks, but also worldly bishops could achieve an earthly form of perfection through a rigorous adherence to their duties as “watchmen,” proved remarkably appealing, and useful, to the Carolingian episcopate. Abandoned, neglected and revived. Aspects in Late Roman society in Northern Gaul. Unpublished thesis (PhD), Ghent University. LATE ROMAN SITES The following list includes every site with coherent in situ structures, datable finds or independent dates provided by radiocarbon dating or dendrochronology, which has the potential to have been an active site or area between AD 275 and 450. Avelgem – Kerkhove – Waarmaardse Kouter The Late Roman component from Kerkhove is very limited compared to its earlier Roman presence. The end of the Roman occupation is believed to have been caused by ‘Frankish’ and ‘Saxons’ raids in AD 260-270. A one-aisled timber construction was found on top of the rubble of a 3rd century stone construction associated with the former road-side building. The sparse material culture containing Eifel ware, handmade pottery, a Late Roman terra nigra foot-vessel and a coin from Constantine II places this phase in the 4th to mid-5th century. Additionally, a single Germanic female burial was found in a filled 3rd century ditch. Among the grave gifts were a silver ring, a wooden bracelet and coin of Postumus, dating the grave approximately at the end of the first half of the 4th century. As Albrecht Diem and other historians of early monasticism have shown, the decision to place the Regula sancti Benedicti (RB) above all other monastic rules came some two hundred years after the Rule's creation, at the hands of another Benedict entirely.1 Situating the RB as the monastic rule for all Western monasticism came at the hand of the Carolingians. For much of the early middle ages, monasteries on the continent were governed by a variety of monastic rules, such as the Regula Magistri (c.500-525), the Regula monachorum of St. Columbanus (c. 600), Isidore of Seville's regula (c. 615), or any number of anonymous or pseudo-attributed rules. To borrow a phrase from Lynda L. Coon, early medieval monasticism was orthopractic rather than orthodox;2 across the Continent, there were certainly commonalities, but an individual monastery's daily life and discipline was shaped more by local tradition than any singular regula.

Several items in the compilation concern pastoral care and one is a set of guidelines for the examination of a new bishop before his consecration; some items are charms, highlighting the miscellaneous nature of the collection. Unsurprisingly, the manuscript (now British Library, Cotton Tiberius A xiii) has proved hard to define and hitherto there has been no assumption that there was an agenda behind the process of selection of materials. The task of analysing the collection has been undertaken by Tracey-Anne Cooper, who sets out in this monograph to explain the manuscript as the product of the third generation of the tenth-century English Benedictine reform movement and in particular to interpret it as a vade mecum for an archbishop faced with the diverse duties of coping with a monastic cathedral community and training men about to become bishops in the supervision of pastoral care. A prominent part of Cooper's argument is that by the reign of Cnut (1016±1635) »almost the entire episcopate was monastic« and that these monastically-trained bishops had received no experience of pastoral care before their elevation.

This is a play on the Greek words topos and tropos . One could add that neither is it when we live that saves us. And yet on reading the lives of saints who lived in other epochs and other lands it is easy to feel that it is impossible for us, in our circumstances, to approach their level of repentance and humility. This is one reason why many British and other English speakers are being attracted to the saints of the British Isles: although these saints lived over a millennium ago they lived on our own soil, or at least on that of our ancestors. It is as though these local saints are not only supporting us from heaven, but are also with us here, on the same soil where they once struggled in the spiritual life. How eagerly the saints of Britain must await our prayers that the land in which they so mightily laboured should again become a garden of virtue! It is difficult to be inspired by saints about whom we know little.

    INTRODUCTION A ROMAN INSTITUTION IN A POST-ROMAN WORLD* A Gallo-Roman Institution In the year AD 742, Saint Boniface (ca. 675–754) composed a letter to the newly elected Pope Zacharias (r. 741–52), in which he informed the pontiff that “old men report that the Franks have not held a synod for eighty years.”1 Although the English bishop was exaggerating by a good four decades, he communicated an unambiguous message: it was reprehensible that the Frankish bishops were so lax in their duties as to neglect meeting collectively with their brethren for the better part of a century. Such an appalling state of aff airs could only suggest a serious state of degeneration among the Frankish episcopacy. For Boniface, the solution to the problem was obvious: new ecclesiastical councils needed to be held in order to correct the abuses of the past decades, with himself, naturally, presiding.2 It was the good fortune of Boniface that the sons of the Frankish maior domus Charles Martel (688–741), Carloman (d. 755) and Pippin III (ca. 714–68), agreed, and enthusias- tically sponsored a series of “reform” councils beginning in the 740s.3 * A diff erent version of this introductory chapter was published before as “Cum Consensu Omnium: Frankish Church Councils from Clovis to Charlemagne” in History Compass, Volume 5, February issue (Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell, 2007).
