Marit Bjørgen (NOR) has won four of the previous 11 sprint World Cup events in Ruka (all classic style), most of all athletes and one more than Petra Majdic (SLO). Bjørgen's four sprint World Cup wins in Ruka, are joint-most for her at a single venue along with Lahti and Düsseldorf. Bjørgen is on five podium finishes in sprint World Cup events in Ruka, joint- most along with Majdic. Bjørgen has only recorded more sprint World Cup podium finishes in Davos (6) than in Ruka (5). Stina Nilsson (SWE) has won the last three sprint World Cup events (free and classic) and could become the first non-Norwegian to claim four victories in a row since Majdic in 2009. Nilsson has won each of the last five sprint World Cup events she participated in. The last time she failed to claim victory was in the sprint free in Davos on 11 December 2016 (31st). On 26 November 2016, Nilsson won the sprint classic in Ruka, her first ever World Cup victory in classic style. Only Maiken Caspersen Falla (NOR, 10) has claimed more sprint World Cup wins since the start of 2014/15 than Nilsson (9). The athletes and the Russian National and Cross-Country Ski Associations were duly notified of the disciplinary proceedings and further investigations by the IOC, and the implementation of provisional suspensions by FIS. Following this notification, the athletes appealed the provisional suspension. The FIS Doping Panel, after having heard Evgeniy Belov and Alexander Legkov, and the FIS, has decided today, 25 th January 2017 by majority not to reverse its initial decision, but to uphold the provisional suspensions of Evgeniy Belov and Alexander Legkov until further notice. As a result of the decisions, the above-mentioned athletes may not take part in any competitions or national team activities. The decisions of the FIS Doping Panel may be appealed exclusively to the Court of Arbitration for Sports in Lausanne (CAS) in accordance with the applicable provisions of CAS. The time to file an appeal to CAS is 21 days. The other four provisionally suspended athletes Julia Ivanova, Evgenia Shapovalova, Alexey Petukhov and Maxim Vylegzhanin have also filed appeals, which are currently in progress.

Skidfesten där glada amatörer ges chansen att utmana världseliten. Mathias Fredriksson avslutar sin karriär storstilat och bjuder in till något helt nytt. En längskidtävling av högsta klass i Åre. Tävlingen är en bana på 13 km i flacka spår, fjällterräng och alpina backar med start i Åre Björnens centrum och målgång vid Copperhill Mountain Lodge. Åre Cross Country Open erbjuder elitklass, amatörklass, lagklass samt en "afterski" klass för de som vill ha en snabb tid in till Copperhill Mountain Lodge. Partypolarna står för underhållningen och sportprofilen Roberto Vacchi håller låda. -När jag nu lägger skidorna på hyllan så vill jag göra det storstilat och festligt. Att arrangera den här typen av tävling i Åre känns som ett annorlunda men självklart val. Åre är ju mest förknippat med alpin skidåkning. Det känns därför extra roligt att vara först med en längdtävling med ett startfält av högsta klass, säger Mathias Fredriksson. Sporet er fylt av skiglede. Uten skigleden, ingen skisport. Ingen vinnere på jakt etter gull. Ingen tilskuere langs løypene. Ingen turgåere i skog og mark. Ingen barn i bakkene. Det ligger et spor foran oss. Også i de neste århundrer vil vi se det fylt av mange skiløpere. Gode skiløpere. Glade skiløpere. Som setter spor etter seg.
