AC Milan face a familiar foe in when they visit FC Zenit St Petersburg for their second fixture in UEFA Champions League Group C. • Spalletti had an excellent record against Milan as coach of AS Roma, and Zenit's impressive recent European history at the Stadion Petrovski suggests a challenging evening is in store for the seven-time winners, who opened their campaign with a goalless draw against RSC Anderlecht as Zenit were succumbing 3-0 at Málaga CF. Match background • Zenit are bidding to extend a 16-match unbeaten home sequence in UEFA competition stretching back to a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid CF in their first UEFA Champions League home fixture on 30 September 2008. • The Russian title holders' run includes three wins and a draw in last season's UEFA Champions League. They have won ten and drawn one of 11 European home fixtures under Spalletti. • Milan did not win on their travels in the 2011/12 competition, recording three draws and two defeats. Their last away victory in the UEFA Champions League was a 2-0 success at AJ Auxerre in November 2010. • Milan's sole previous UEFA Champions League engagement in Russia was a 1-0 victory at FC Lokomotiv Moskva in the 2002/03 second group stage through a Rivaldo penalty. They won the trophy that year, just as they did after their only other victory in Russia – a -inspired 1-0 success at FC Spartak Moskva in the 1972/73 European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals. • Zenit's last encounter with Italian opponents came in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup round of 16 against Udinese Calcio. 's team lost 2-0 in Italy, winning the return 1-0 through Anatoliy Tymoshchuk's goal. Vyacheslav Malafeev, Aleksandr Anyukov, , Igor Denisov, Viktor Fayzulin, Roman Shirokov and all featured. • Zenit's two other home ties with opposition were a goalless draw with Juventus in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage and a 3-0 defeat by Bologna FC in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup first round. Team ties • Spalletti and his Milan counterpart both played, at different times, for amateur side UC Cuoiopelli. Both from Tuscany, they were born 80km apart, in Certaldo and Livorno respectively. • As coaches in Serie A, the pair crossed swords only in 2008/09. Spalletti's Roma beat Allegri's Cagliari Calcio 3-2 with a last-minute goal at the Stadio Olimpico and then came from two down to earn a 2-2 away draw. • With Roma between 2005 and 2009, Spalletti posted two wins and two draws in home Serie A meetings with Milan. His overall record was W5 D2 L1. Philippe Mexès was with him throughout his four years in Rome. • With Udinese – where he was coach in 2001 and again from 2002 to 2005 – Spalletti was also unbeaten at home against Milan, recording one win and two draws. His overall Serie A record against the Rossoneri with Udinese was: W2 D2 L3. • Spalletti also coached Empoli FC, UC Sampdoria, AC Venezia and AC Ancona in Italy. • played for Genoa CFC and Juventus and was a team-mate of Marco Amelia and Stephan El Shaarawy at Genoa in 2009/10. • Criscito has played for Italy alongside , , and Giampaolo Pazzini. • Shirokov (2) and Kerzhakov scored as Russia overcame Montolivo and Nocerino's Italy 3-0 in a pre-UEFA EURO 2012 friendly in Zurich on 1 June. Denisov, Malafeev and Zyryanov also played for Russia. • Kerzhakov was a substitute in the Sevilla FC side beaten 3-1 by Milan in the 2007 UEFA Super Cup. • Aleksandar Luković spent four seasons with Udinese, including a loan spell at Ascoli Calcio. He played alongside Cristián Zapata in Udinese's 1-0 second-leg loss to Zenit in the UEFA Cup round of 16 on 19 March 2009; the Italian side nevertheless won 2-1 on aggregate. • Sergei Semak and Mario Yepes were team-mates at Paris Saint-Germain FC from 2005 to 2006. • Semak played in Russia's 1-0 reverse at Italy in a 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off. FC Zenit St Petersburg: Luciano Spalletti Date of birth: 7 March 1959 Nationality: Italian Playing career: AC Entella Chiavari 1914, Spezia Calcio 1906, FC Esperia Viareggio, Empoli FC Coaching career: Empoli FC, UC Sampdoria, Venezia Calcio, Udinese Calcio (twice), Ancona Calcio, AS Roma, FC Zenit St Petersburg • An industrious in his playing days, he started his coaching career in 1993/94 with former club Empoli and enjoyed immediate success with successive promotions. • After a good first campaign in the top flight, Spalletti left to join Sampdoria but was sacked 28 games into the 1998/99 season. • Had brief stays at Venezia, Udinese and Ancona but returned to Udinese in summer 2002, steering them to sixth and seventh-placed finishes before guiding them into the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2004/05. This success persuaded Roma to approach Spalletti, and he signed a two-year contract. • In 2005/06 Roma set a record of consecutive Serie A wins (11) and finished fifth, with Spalletti subsequently named Serie A coach of the year. Guided the Giallorossi to success in 2007 and 2008 and two UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. • After a difficult 2008/09, Spalletti resigned in September 2009, joining Zenit three months later on a three-year deal. Soon after he delivered their first Russian Cup in 11 years, and with his side going a record 23 games unbeaten from the start of the season, took the league title at the end of 2010, retaining it in the transitional 2011/12 campaign.

AC Milan: Massimiliano Allegri Date of birth: 11 August 1967 Nationality: Italian Playing career: UC Cuoiopelli, AS Livorno Calcio (twice), Pisa Calcio, AC Pavia, Pescara Calcio (twice), Cagliari Calcio, AC Perugia, Calcio Padova, SSC Napoli, AC Pistoiese, Aglianese Calcio 1923 Coaching career: Aglianese Calcio 1923, SPAL 1907, US Grosseto FC, US Sassuolo Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, AC Milan • A creative attacking midfielder, Allegri started out in his native Tuscany with Cuoiopelli and then Livorno, his hometown club. First appeared in Serie A for Pisa against Milan in 1988/89 but played only twice that season before heading back to Livorno. • Returned to Serie A after helping Pescara win promotion in 1992. The following term he scored 12 goals under Giovanni Galeone, the coach Allegri still considers his mentor. After leaving Pescara in 1993, had spells at Cagliari, Perugia, Padova and Napoli before hanging up his boots back in Tuscany with fourth division Aglianese in 2003. • Moved straight into coaching at Aglianese, prior to taking charge at SPAL and Grosseto. In November 2008 he won the Panchina d'Oro (golden bench) as the third division's best coach having led Sassuolo to promotion. • Had earlier been appointed by Cagliari whom he led to ninth place in 2009, winning the Panchina d'Oro again, this time as Serie A's best coach. A bad run of results the following season prompted Allegri's dismissal on 13 April 2010 – although he had already done enough to earn a two-year contract at Milan. • Allegri's first season at San Siro ended with his new club winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2004. In January 2012 he extended his contract until June 2014.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest goals against total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
