The Greatest Mathematical Discovery? David H. Bailey∗ Jonathan M. Borweiny April 24, 2011 1 Introduction Question: What mathematical discovery more than 1500 years ago: • Is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, single discovery in the field of mathematics? • Involved three subtle ideas that eluded the greatest minds of antiquity, even geniuses such as Archimedes? • Was fiercely resisted in Europe for hundreds of years after its discovery? • Even today, in historical treatments of mathematics, is often dismissed with scant mention, or else is ascribed to the wrong source? As the 19th century mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace explained: It is India that gave us the ingenious method of expressing all numbers by means of ten symbols, each symbol receiving a value of position as well as an absolute value; a profound and important idea which appears so simple to us now that we ignore its true merit. But its very sim- plicity and the great ease which it has lent to all computations put our arithmetic in the first rank of useful inventions; and we shall appre- ciate the grandeur of this achievement the more when we remember that it escaped the genius of Archimedes and Apollonius, two of the greatest men produced by antiquity. -
Kharosthi Manuscripts: a Window on Gandharan Buddhism*
KHAROSTHI MANUSCRIPTS: A WINDOW ON GANDHARAN BUDDHISM* Andrew GLASS INTRODUCTION In the present article I offer a sketch of Gandharan Buddhism in the centuries around the turn of the common era by looking at various kinds of evidence which speak to us across the centuries. In doing so I hope to shed a little light on an important stage in the transmission of Buddhism as it spread from India, through Gandhara and Central Asia to China, Korea, and ultimately Japan. In particular, I will focus on the several collections of Kharo~thi manuscripts most of which are quite new to scholarship, the vast majority of these having been discovered only in the past ten years. I will also take a detailed look at the contents of one of these manuscripts in order to illustrate connections with other text collections in Pali and Chinese. Gandharan Buddhism is itself a large topic, which cannot be adequately described within the scope of the present article. I will therefore confine my observations to the period in which the Kharo~thi script was used as a literary medium, that is, from the time of Asoka in the middle of the third century B.C. until about the third century A.D., which I refer to as the Kharo~thi Period. In addition to looking at the new manuscript materials, other forms of evidence such as inscriptions, art and architecture will be touched upon, as they provide many complementary insights into the Buddhist culture of Gandhara. Overview This is a Sanskrit reading course in which intermediate Sanskrit students will prepare translations of Sanskrit texts and present them in class. While the course will review Sanskrit grammar when necessary, it presumes students have already completed an introduction to Sanskrit grammar. Readings: All readings will be made available on myCourses. If you ever have any issues accessing the readings, or there are problems with a PDF, please let me know immediately. You may also wish to purchase or borrow a hard copy of Charles Lanman’s A Sanskrit Reader (1884) for ease of reference, but the ebook will be on myCourses. The exact reading on a given day will depend on how far we progressed in the previous class. For the first half of the course, we will be reading selections from the Lanman’s Sanskrit Reader, and in the second half of the course we will read from the Bhagavadgītā. Assessment and grading: Attendance: 20% Class participation based on prepared translations: 20% Test #1: 25% Test #2: 35% For attendance and class participation, students are expected to have prepared translations of the relevant Sanskrit text. -

That conclusion, which was reached for other reasons, is thus confirmed by the distribution of the modern dialects. (Burrow 1936) Under this name I propose to include those inscriptions of Aśoka which are recorded at Shahbazgaṛhi and Mansehra in the Kharoṣṭhī script, the vehicle for the remains of much of this dialect. To be included also are the following sources: the Buddhist literary text, the Dharmapada found in Khotan, written likewise in Kharoṣṭhī [...]; the Kharoṣṭhī documents on wood, leather, and silk from Caḍ́ota (the Niya site) on the border of the ancient kingdom of Khotan, which represented the official language of the capital Krorayina [...]. -

Lean In modern technological societies we take the existence of numbers and the act of counting for granted: they occur in most everyday activities. They are regarded as being sufficiently important to warrant their occupying a substantial part of the primary school curriculum. Most of us, however, would find it difficult to answer with any authority several basic questions about number and counting. For example, how and when did numbers arise in human cultures: are they relatively recent inventions or are they an ancient feature of language? Is counting an important part of all cultures or only of some? Do all cultures count in essentially the same ways? In English, for example, we use what is known as a base 10 counting system and this is true of other European languages. Indeed our view of counting and number tends to be very much a Eurocentric one and yet the large majority the languages spoken in the world - about 4500 - are not European in nature but are the languages of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific, Africa, and the Americas. If we take these into account we obtain a quite different picture of counting systems from that of the Eurocentric view. This study, which attempts to answer these questions, is the culmination of more than twenty years on the counting systems of the indigenous and largely unwritten languages of the Pacific region and it involved extensive fieldwork as well as the consultation of published and rare unpublished sources. -

My master, Ludwig Traube, had proposed to me the thesis ' Monte Cassino as a centre for the transmission of Latin classics \ After spending some time on this subject it became clear that adequate treatment of it would be possible only after acquiring such a knowledge of the peculiar script used at Monte Cassino as would enable me to make sound and independent judgements with regard to the dates of Monte Cassino MSS., that is, MSS. written in the Beneventan or South Italian minuscule. Thus I conceived the idea of making a careful study of the script employed throughout the lower half of the Italian peninsula. Traube made no objection to my working on a subject of my own choice ; but with characteristic generosity put at my disposal his entire library, his very large collection of facsimiles, and even some of his own notes. -

Introduction The aim of this paper is to analyse the natatian ibat appears alongside the Reman numerals in tbe Latin manuscript MDU·604 of the Capitular Libnuy in Urgell (Northem Catalonia. Spain)l, which was copied in 938. Unlil now, this notation (see Table II and Fig. 1) has beeo considered to be 1 tbe oldest testimony of Hindu·Arabic cipbers in the lbenan Peninsula . This opinion is sharcd, among othcrs, by Alturo i Perucho (2003: 124). Nevertheless, the Greek alphanumerical ciphers agree in al1 cases (except for 3 errors in a total ofmore than ISO correspondences) with Roman figures. Confusion between Hindu·Arabic and Greek (or romí) figures is not uncommon. JusI as a sample, Menendez Pidal [19S9: fig 3) did not recognize as Greek notation the ciphm in manuscript El Escorial R.lLl8. which are extremely similar to the ones in the Urgell manuscript.
