    The National Youth Orchestra of Germany – Play, Promote, Inspire! The National Youth Orchestra of Germany is Germany’s youngest major orchestra, founded by the German Music Council in 1969 and made up of the country’s finest young musicians between the ages of 14 and 19. In addition to Sir Simon Rattle, distinguished conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Kurt Masur, Gustavo Dudamel, and Kirill Petrenko have led the orchestra; soloists have included Christian Tetzlaff, Tabea Zimmermann, and Fazil Say, as well as the rock musicians Sting and Peter Maffay. Since 2018, Sir Simon Rattle is Conductor Laureate of the National Youth Orchestra: “What an enormous pleasure to meet this wonderful next generation of colleagues! I think the future of orchestras is safe in your hands…” The young musicians qualify by auditioning for a jury of professionals. During intensive work phases, they prepare significant orchestral works from all periods; contemporary music and premieres of new compositions are an integral part of the repertoire. Tours have taken the group throughout Europe, as well as to Asia, Africa, and North and South America. The orchestra has participated in numerous projects of historical significance, including a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift with Kurt Masur in New York and concerts in Johannesburg and Cape Town as part the cultural activities preceding the World Cup football games in 2010. The orchestra opened the German Year in Mexico City in 2016, and in 2017 toured for the second time with the German National Youth Ballet, this time with a program called “Summit Meeting – Reformation”.

Since 2018, Sir Simon Rattle is Conductor Laureate of the National Youth Orchestra. In addition to Sir Simon, distinguished conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Kurt Masur, Gustavo Dudamel, and Kirill Petrenko have led the orchestra; soloists have included Christian Tetzlaff, Tabea Zimmermann, and Fazil Say, as well as the rock musicians Sting and Peter Maffay. In 2016, the orchestra – together with the conductor Alexander Shelley and Campino from the group “Die Toten Hosen” – was awarded an ECHO Klassik prize in the category “Classic for Children”. In 2013, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra assumed an official mentoring role for the youth orchestra, which is invited each year to the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden to join members of the Berlin Philharmonic for master classes, chamber music, and concerts performed together under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle. The young musicians qualify by auditioning for a jury of professionals. During intensive work phases, they prepare significant orchestral works from all periods; contemporary music and premieres of new compositions are an integral part of the repertoire. The engagement with great musical literature, the work with professional musicians from Germany’s finest orchestras and universities, as well as encounters with other like-minded young artists contribute to an unforgettable experience for the members of the orchestra. The National Youth Orchestra of Germany has performed around the world, often as a cultural ambassador for the Federal Republic of Germany.

August 2019 Sommertournee des Bundesjugendorchesters – Festivaltournee nach Berlin, Nürnberg und Hamburg mit ARTE Livestream und Public Viewing sowie Konzertreise nach Südafrika Die anstehenden Konzerte im August führen das Bundesjugendorchester zum jährlichen Gastspiel bei Young Euro Classic in Berlin, erstmals in den Nürnberger Serenadenhof und zum Elbphilharmonie Sommer nach Hamburg. Die diesjährigen Auslandsgastspiele sind in fünf Städten Südafrikas zu erleben. Die Aktivitäten werden nahezu lückenlos medial begleitet und in alle Welt übertragen. Festivaltournee Bereits zum vierten Mal dirigiert Alexander Shelley, Musikalischer Leiter des National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa/Kanada und ehemals Chefdirigent der Nürnberger Symphoniker, das Bundesjugendorchester. Dabei präsentiert er neben der 2. Sinfonie von Johannes Brahms ein Programm mit starken afrikanischen Bezügen. Am 3. August ist das Orchester im Rahmen des Festivals Young Euro Classic im Berliner Konzerthaus mit der südafrikanischen Sängerin Msaki zu hören, die die „Three African Songs for Miriam Makeba“ des Kapstädters Hendrik Hofmeyr uraufführt. Auf dem Programm stehen zudem William Waltons „Johannesburg Festival Ouverture“ und „A Symphonic Picture“ aus George Gershwins Oper „Porgy and Bess“. Am 6. August gastiert das Projekt im Nürnberger Serenadenhof, den Abschluss bildet die Hamburger Elbphilharmonie am der 18. August. Mediale Begleitung Außerhalb der Konzertsäle ist das Orchester am 03. August im Livestream von ARTE Concert sowie auf der Facebookseite des Bundesjugendorchester zu erleben, die Aufzeichnung des rbb wird im gesamten Bundesgebiet am 23. August im Rahmen des ARD Radiofestivals zu hören sein. Die Deutsche Welle wird die Aktivitäten in Johannesburg und Pretoria in Kooperation mit dem Bonner Beethovenfest filmen und das WDR Fernsehen begleitet das Orchester auf der gesamten Tournee mit dem Konzert am 15.

Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) is a new technique for sound spatialisation. It aims at a physical reconstruction of sound fields according to natural or artificial models by synthesizing the wave fronts of a defined virtual sound source with the superposition of wave fronts emitted by a closely spaced array of loudspeakers. Thus, the spatial configuration of those virtual sound sources does not depend on a certain listener position (sweet spot), as it is the case with traditional stereophonic techniques such as two channel stereo or surround. Moreover, while stereo setups allow the placement of sounds only on a line between the involved speakers and do not work well for lateral sources, WFS has no limitations concerning the placement of virtual sound sources outside and even inside of the reproduction array. The WFS hall in the main building of the TU Berlin is equipped with an array of 832 loudspeakes. The system can synthesize up to 42 virtual sound sources located inside or outside the room. Audio is fed into the system in realtime, where the sound of one audio channel represents the sound of one virtual source.

Rightly so, for music is greatly in demand by the population. Of the 16 hours that we spend awake each day, we hear on average more than five hours of music transmitted by the media, most of it via radio and television.1 In short, broadcast music plays a central role in the daily lives of most Germans.
