Densely packed between the Rhine, Ruhr and Lippe, we find a great variety of different cultural forms flourishing in amongst one another, more than in any other part of Germany. North-Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is not only the most populous German state, it was also shaped by decades of immigration, long before its incorporation as a state in 1946. Today, immigration remains a hallmark of the region’s development. So it is that the musical life of people here is determined by diverse cultures of origin. Thousands of artists work in a ‘Melting Pot’ of music: bands and ensembles, agencies and labels, music schools and cultural centers, clubs, associations, foundations and research institutions. International networking is the elixir of life for many people. There are so many organisations that this booklet cannot be exhaustive, nor can it necessarily claim to mention the most important institutions. In the following pages we present a selection of institutions and groups that deal with musical diversity from Nordrhein-Westfalen: innovative and intertwining, open minded and curious. • Dave and Maggie Hunt
Citation for Dave and Maggie Hunt It is unlikely that the people assembled here in Abbots Bromley will not know of Dave and Maggie Hunt and have some appreciation of their status not only in the folk world but also on its fringes. This Gold Badge Award gives us the opportunity to look back on two varied careers that have, separately and together, brought richness to folk music and community arts over many years. It also provides the opportunity to learn things about the two of them that perhaps were not apparent because you’ve only came across them in one of their guises. In the words of a non-folk song, ‘Let’s start at the very beginning – a very good place to start!’ Like many of us, Dave came to folk music in the 50s via Skiffle, and given its relationship to American folk music there was a natural progression to English folk music and that of its neighbours. The CND marches of his youth also provided a basic repertoire, but early exposure, via work at the Edinburgh Festival, to the likes of Rae and Archie Fisher, Bobby Campbell and Gordie McCulloch, Hamish Imlach, Norman Kennedy, and more started to broaden his knowledge. As an early attendee in 1963 of Wolverhampton’s Giffard Folk Club (he went to its second meeting for the princely entrance donation of 6d – six old pence) he soon graduated to resident status and then on to the committee of a club that was the starting point for all manner of folk activity, as we will see.

  • Running Head: NATIONAL IMAGERY in FINNISH FOLK METAL 1
Running head: NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL 1 NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL: Lyrics, Facebook and Beyond Renée Barbosa Moura Master‟s thesis Digital Culture University of Jyväskylä Department of Art and Culture Studies Jyväskylä 2014 NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL 2 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ Faculty Department Humanities Art and Culture Studies Author Renée Barbosa Moura Title National Imagery in FFM: Lyrics, Facebook and Beyond Subject Level Digital Culture MA Thesis Month and year Number of pages June 2014 90 pages Abstract Folk metal is a music genre originated from heavy metal music. For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness.

Shrestha 1 Nityam Shrestha Dr. Ackerman CS 185c February 22, 2017 Celtic Pagan Music saved by Technology, Creativity and Belief Technology is now an integral part of everyone’s day-to-day life. After the industrial revolution (mid 1700s) and the digital revolution (late 1950s) our lives have been significantly improved. People are healthier, communication is easier, transportation is safer and the world is improving and becoming a better place to live. But these improvements have also changed the way we view and enjoy arts. Advancing technology also brought us many new forms of arts like graffiti (spray can), game arts (mobile/ web/ VR), 3D animations (games, movies, VR), sculptures (3D printing), etc. But technology has also shown us, both the better and the worst sides of it. With all these technological advancements people are forgetting old cultures and their art forms. Most people today are more familiar with native ancient traditions of the different cultures of the world, but barely of Europe. The Native American tradition, the tribal religions of Africa, the sophistication of Hindu belief and practice and the more recently revived Japanese tradition, Shinto, are widely acknowledge as the authentic native animistic tradition of their respective areas. In marked contrast, the European native tradition, from the massive civilizations of Greece and Rome to the barley documented tribal systems of the Picts, the Finns and other norther margins of the continent, has seen as having been obliterated totally. The Shrestha 2 people forgotten here, are the Celtic pagans. Their culture was superseded first by Christianity and Islam and, more recently, by post-Christian humanism.

"THE SCREAMING SUCCESSOR": EXPLORING THE CHINESE METAL SCENE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINESE SOCIETY (1996-2015) Yu Zheng A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2016 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2016 Yu Zheng All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This research project explores the characteristics and the trajectory of metal development in China and examines how various factors have influenced the localization of this music scene. I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. And, this localized trajectory is influenced by the accessibility of metal resources, the rapid economic growth, urbanization, and the progress of modernization in China, and the overall development of cultural industry and international cultural communication. iv For Yisheng and our unborn baby! v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First of all, I would like to show my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Dr.

The National Youth Orchestra of Germany – Play, Promote, Inspire! The National Youth Orchestra of Germany is Germany’s youngest major orchestra, founded by the German Music Council in 1969 and made up of the country’s finest young musicians between the ages of 14 and 19. In addition to Sir Simon Rattle, distinguished conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Kurt Masur, Gustavo Dudamel, and Kirill Petrenko have led the orchestra; soloists have included Christian Tetzlaff, Tabea Zimmermann, and Fazil Say, as well as the rock musicians Sting and Peter Maffay. Since 2018, Sir Simon Rattle is Conductor Laureate of the National Youth Orchestra: “What an enormous pleasure to meet this wonderful next generation of colleagues! I think the future of orchestras is safe in your hands…” The young musicians qualify by auditioning for a jury of professionals. During intensive work phases, they prepare significant orchestral works from all periods; contemporary music and premieres of new compositions are an integral part of the repertoire. Tours have taken the group throughout Europe, as well as to Asia, Africa, and North and South America. The orchestra has participated in numerous projects of historical significance, including a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift with Kurt Masur in New York and concerts in Johannesburg and Cape Town as part the cultural activities preceding the World Cup football games in 2010. The orchestra opened the German Year in Mexico City in 2016, and in 2017 toured for the second time with the German National Youth Ballet, this time with a program called “Summit Meeting – Reformation”.

  • The Folk Club Of
The Folk Club of Reston - Herndon Volume 21, Issue 10 Preserving the traditions of October 2004 Folk Music, Folklore and Gentle Folk Ways October 18 Showcase – T.M Hanna By T.M. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody at the Folk Club for all the support, friendship, and music that you have shared over the years. When I first started attending the Club, I believe about sixteen years ago, I had very limited experience performing in public. Since then I have performed in over a hundred smoky bars, three dozen coffeehouses, seven festivals, and four churches. I’m told I hold the record for showcase performances, although I am uncertain exactly how many I have done (I probably hold a similar record for accompanying other showcase performers, too). My first one really didn’t go all that well, but, as always, the Club members were very encouraging. Fortunately, that was in the days before recording devices. While attending the Folk Club, I have heard musicians and instruments from all over the country, and many parts of the world as well. I’ve seen performers gain confidence and improve their musical abilities by leaps and bounds. I have seen Club members who have moved on to Nashville, or to touring the country with songs that we first heard here. I've heard some of the best live music ever, as well as some of the worst, sometimes in the same night! I have seen nights when the room was packed and chairs were at a premium, and nights when the place was nearly deserted, but I’ve never seen a night when there wasn’t at least one person willing to listen to a song or two.
