CHAPTER IV ............... To the Ombrone-Orcia Valley r\.T noon on n June Fifth Army pursued the Germans northwestward with two fresh command groups directing operations. IV Corps was on the left and the FEC on the right after completion of their relief of VI Corps and II Corps respectively. Comparatively fresh troops were available for the continuance of the chase, especially in the French zone where the two FEC divisions initially committed, the 1st Motor ized Division and the 3d Algerian Infantry Division, had been out of heavy com bat nearly two weeks. Only one American division, the 36th, was in action on the IV Corps side. It had been following behind the swift advance of Combat Command A of the 1st Armored Division north of Rome. Although its men had been con stantly on the move since passing Rome, it had not been engaged in any extensive righting, its action behind the armor having been confined largely to mopping up operations. The 361st Regimental Combat Team was attached, giving the 36th Di vision four regimental combat teams. The 34th Division was resting in the vicinity of Tarquinia, where it had moved from Civitavecchia to make way for supply depots being set up near the port. The 1st Armored Division was rehabilitating near Bracciano, and the other two French divisions, the 26. Moroccan Infantry Division and the 4th Mountain Division, were in FEC reserve. The 85th and 88th Divisions were en route to rest areas south and west of Rome. Other American and British divisions around Rome were in the process of leaving Fifth Army. -

Federico Selvi A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy) Abstract Selvi, F.: A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 20: 47-139. 2010. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Tuscan Maremma is a historical region of central western Italy of remarkable ecological and landscape value, with a surface of about 4.420 km2 largely corresponding to the province of Grosseto. A critical inventory of the native and naturalized vascular plant species growing in this territory is here presented, based on over twenty years of author's collections and study of relevant herbarium materials and literature. The checklist includes 2.056 species and subspecies (excluding orchid hybrids), of which, however, 49 should be excluded, 67 need confirmation and 15 have most probably desappeared during the last century. Considering the 1.925 con- firmed taxa only, this area is home of about 25% of the Italian flora though representing only 1.5% of the national surface. The main phytogeographical features in terms of life-form distri- bution, chorological types, endemic species and taxa of particular conservation relevance are presented. Species not previously recorded from Tuscany are: Anthoxanthum ovatum Lag., Cardamine amporitana Sennen & Pau, Hieracium glaucinum Jord., H. maranzae (Murr & Zahn) Prain (H. neoplatyphyllum Gottschl.), H. murorum subsp. tenuiflorum (A.-T.) Schinz & R. Keller, H. vasconicum Martrin-Donos, Onobrychis arenaria (Kit.) DC., Typha domingensis (Pers.) Steud., Vicia loiseleurii (M. Bieb) Litv. and the exotic Oenothera speciosa Nutt. Ri- lievi di formazione geologica più antica (termine meridionale della Dorsale Medio-Toscana, Colline di Montepescali-Batignano, Monti dell’Uccellina) - dalla morfologia aspra e dominati da formazioni boschive (cerrete, leccete, macchia mediterranea, sugherete), rilievi più addolciti (nella restante parte collinare dell’ambito) - in cui il bosco si contrae a vantaggio di coltivi e pascoli, caratterizzano l’ampia compagine collinare. Il sistema insediativo della collina si struttura lungo la Valle del fiume Ombrone (borghi fortificati medievali, lo- calizzati in posizione strategica - sulla sommità o a mezza costa - e sviluppati lungo i percorsi collinari) e sulle Colline dell’Albegna (nuclei compatti medievali - rocche, edifici religiosi, castelli e borghi - arroccati sulle sommità dei versanti e lungo la viabilità di crinale). Qui i nuclei, spesso di impianto medievale - collocati in posizione dominante, dalla morfologia compatta, non di rado murati (Pereta, Magliano, Montiano, Pari, Casale di Pari, Cinigiano, Civitella Marittima, Sasso d’Ombrone, Campagnatico, Batignano), hanno visto salvaguardati i rapporti originari con l’intorno coltivato. -

She discovered the Maremma Tuscany as an English teacher in 2007. A sixth-month vacation became a lifelong love affair after she met her husband, a born-and-bred Maremmano. Now living in Manciano, Elisa discovers something new to love about the Maremma every day. She is still astounded by the pure beauty of the Parco della Maremma and infatuated with the quiet charm of Montemerano.
