Divine Glory

For pastoral concerns, please contact Susan McEvoy (754-7079). To make changes or additions to the prayer list or to put an announcement in the bulletin contact Diana Anderson (754-2113). Our Service Today is March 3, the Last Sunday after the Epiphany. Our gospel is the story of Jesus’ transfiguration. It is a story richly woven with themes and symbols drawn from Israel’s past and its hopes for the future. Moses and Elijah represent the law and the prophets; while Jesus is praying, divine glory is reflected in his human person. Today is also our Companion Links Sunday. This year we are taking part in a fresh expressions-influenced liturgy from the Diocese of Leicester, England called “Campfire Communion.” In 2015 the Bishop of each of the five Links Dioceses discerned that one Sunday a year would be dedicated to experiencing a typical worship service from one of our dioceses each year. The Diocese of Wyoming is privileged to be linked with the Diocese of Leicester; the Trichy-Tanjore Diocese, ; Diocese of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania; and the Diocese of Kiteto, Tanzania. Through these partnerships we offer practical support in mission through Christian education, healthcare, agriculture, church planting and other projects and in meeting urgent needs. Of equal importance is what we can learn from each other. We grow in a truer understanding of what the Holy Spirit is calling us to do through hearing how that same Spirit is guiding sisters and brothers in Christ from very different cultural backgrounds to our own. Above all, through supporting each other in prayer, we seek the coming of the Kingdom and we remind ourselves that in Jesus Christ we are one News To share news or to get the news – if you have information for the benefit of the congregation, please send an email to all three of these people: Sue Woods ([email protected]), Diana Anderson ([email protected]) and Jen Litterer-Trevino ([email protected]). Sue will then send out an “everybody” email; Diana will print it in the Sunday bulletin, and Jen will post on our website on the “News” button. Our new website address is stjohnspowell.diowy.org.

Opening Sentences In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord is here His Spirit is with us Light of God lead us Mercy of God wash us Peace of God ground us Cross of God go before us Word of God speak.

Collect Let us pray. Holy God, present in our midst yet beyond all comprehension, by your light, we see light; by your healing, we are made whole; by your mercy, we know your greatness. Turn your gaze upon our weakness and show us the way of your love that we may live with unveiled faces, through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading Exodus 34:29-35 After the reading, the reader says The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 99 1The Eternal is the king ruling over all; let all people shake in fear. He sits on His throne, settled between winged guardians, let the planet tremble. 2 The Eternal is great in the hearts of His people; He has made Zion His sacred mountain, and He reigns majestic over all people. 3 Let them express praise and gratitude to Your amazing and awesome name— because He is holy, perfect and exalted in His power. 4 The King who rules with strength also treasures justice. You created order and established what is right. You have carried out justice and done what is right to the people of Jacob. 5 Lift up the Eternal our God in your heart; bow down to the earth where He rests His feet. He is holy, perfect and exalted in His power. 6 Moses and Aaron were two of His priests; Samuel was among those who called out to Him. They asked the Eternal for help, and He answered them. 7 He answered them from a column of cloud; they heeded His testimonies and lived by the laws He gave them. 8 You answered them, Eternal our God; You were, to them, a God who forgives, yet You did not ignore what they did wrong and punished them fairly as well. 9 Lift up the Eternal our God in your hearts, and celebrate His goodness at His holy mountain, for the Eternal our God is holy, perfect and exalted in His power.

Second Reading Corinthians 3:12-4:2 After the reading, the reader says The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel We stand. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (9:28-36). Glory to you, O Lord. At the end This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Presentation on the Diocese of Leicester “The Edgelands…” Affirmation of Faith We believe in the Creator who imagined this world And then made it with all its earthy glory Who made us in God’s image with the same gift of imagination Made to create, to look after the earth and develop its resources. We believe in Jesus the Son of God Who most perfectly embodied that God-like image Participating in the overflow of God’s love for the world He calls us to participate in the same love for the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit of Life Who animates us with the breath of God Who assures us that we are God’s children Who calls us to risk and to offer up the gifts we have been given. We believe that one day God will make all things new While we wait we will engage in our communities, our neighborhoods, our workplaces and the edgelands Bringing foretastes of that new creation now and sharing the good news of God’s wonderful Kingdom. Amen.

For leaders and elders that they will abide by your commandments. Jesus Christ, Light of the world, in your light we see light. The Lord’s Prayer As our Savior taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. Confession Let us confess our sins to God. Sometimes we find it easier to step back into what is known, rather than out into the new. We are too scared to risk, too embarrassed to try and too doubtful to trust. God of the edgelands Have mercy on us. Sometimes in our eagerness, own strength or pressure to achieve we hurry or force growth, count what is not ours to count and fail to see where you are bringing life to others. God of the edgelands Have mercy on us. Sometimes we ignore new and tender shoots and instead let the weeds that bind and constrict grow. We neglect to pray, fail to listen and are blind to the stirring of your spirit. God of the edgelands Have mercy on us. Sometimes we think it’s all down to us and we forget that to grow we need the earth of community, the water of other people’s contribution, the sunshine of your favour and the nutrients that come through conversation and challenge. God of the edgelands, Have mercy on us. Absolution May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us ours sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

Peace May the peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We greet one another in the name of the Lord. Announcements Offertory We serve the Lord with freedom; we worship God with joy. In freedom and in joy, let us present the offerings of our lives to the Lord. Music “E’en so Lord, Quickly Come,” Cantus. That Eternal Day. Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Almighty God, good Father to us all, whose Spirit comes unseen as the wind, your hands have made earth, sea and sky. Your face is turned towards the world. In love you gave us Jesus your Son to rescue us from sin and death. Your arms reach out to call us home, to the city where angels sing your praise. We join with them in heaven’s song.

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies it remains a single seed, but if it dies it will produce lots of wheat. Wheat is ground to make flour. Flour is mixed with water, salt and yeast to make bread. Bread is Your body which broken for healing. Dismissal We hang our lives upon your mercy measured out in miles. Your boundaries and pathways, coordinates and charts guide our steps along roads you travelled before us. Help us to make our home in the edgelands, seeking your Kingdom and as we do. We will make time for You and Your word and we will practice your ways until they are part of us and part of those whom you call us to serve. Together, we will be your people. Go with us now, this day and always. Amen. Postlude “Asleep the Snow Came Flying,” Tim Story. Collected.

Questions for Reflection Look at Luke 9:35: “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” Where have you heard words like these before in the Gospels? (Hint: see Luke 3:22.) Where have you heard words like these in your own life? When have you had a strong sense of being chosen, claimed, and called by God? How have you responded? Household Prayer: Morning Lord Jesus Christ, as morning dawns, be our light in this new day. Let our lives reflect your glory, our words show forth your goodness, and our actions shine with your grace; in your holy name we pray. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening Lord Jesus Christ, as evening comes, be our light and hope in darkness. Draw near to us in grace, surround us with your presence, and fill us with your peace; in your holy name we pray. Amen.
