Socio-Economic Series nr 4, 165-182 2005 BULLETIN OF GEOGRAPHY (SOCIO-ECONOMIC SERIES) NO. 4/2005 Zbigniew Rykiel University of Zielona Góra THE CULTURAL LIQUIDATION OF LUSATIA IN THE CONTEXT OF THE EUROPEAN AND GERMAN INTEGRATION BASIC CONCEPTS The concept of cultural liquidation, developed by K. Buchanan (1978), is set in a wider theoretical context. The concept of assimilation is one that has widely been applied, even though rarely defined, especially in geographical li­ terature. Generally, however, it can be recognised as a special case of the pro­ cess of social adaptation. Membership in specific social groups has widely been accepted as an indication of social adaptation. The notion of assimilation sug­ gests, in turn, that the adjustment of a minority group to the cultural pattern of the majority is considered. Assimilation of immigrant groups has especially been stressed, particularly of those ethnically peculiar (Kennedy, 1943; Price, Zu­ brzycki, 1962; Clarke, 1971; Peach, 1980). Assimilation is opposite to social integration, which implies a mutual adju­ stment of the minority and the majority in cultural, social, political or socio- spatial contexts. As a result, a new cultural pattern can be formed that includes some elements of both minority and majority cultural patterns (Rykiel, 2002). The practice of assimilation, on the contrary, has been based on the assumption that it is advantageous fof the minority to adapt to the majority’s more satisfy­ ing, prosperous and „civilised” way of life. The majority, identified with the dominant ethno-class, believes therefore the dominant culture should not be modified by any aspect of minority culture.

That reductionist approach, often labeled “scientism” in Poland, dismisses the etiological power of religious beliefs and motives in history’s dynamics – and it was by and large rejected in Western scholarship roughly a century ago. 2 Yet as the medieval historian Richard Fletcher observed already a decade into the post-Cold War era, “This line of argument has held some appeal for historians of a Marxist inclination, of whom a few may still be encountered in remote places” 3. Polish historians might chuckle upon reading that – or cringe, as the case may be. For the shoe certainly fits. The structural realities of the Soviet bloc of course compounded this problem, inasmuch as they fostered the virtual autarky of national scholarly communities. Thus, until the demise of communism, Polish historians were importantly cut off from the community of Western scholars. Their ensuing lack of skill with Western languages only deepened the 1 J.     NANCY SANDARS Nancy Katharine Sandars 29 June 1914 – 20 November 2015 elected Fellow of the British Academy 1984 by HELEN HUGHES-BROCK Nancy Sandars (1914–2015) was an archaeologist and prehistorian, the author of original and well-written books and articles examining cultural contacts and inter- actions of peoples in Bronze and Iron Age western and south-eastern Europe, Greece and the eastern Mediterranean as suggested by artefacts and technological develop- ments, particularly in swords and other metalwork. She wrote on European prehis- toric art from Palaeolithic to the Iron Age. She published English versions of poems from ancient Mesopotamia and Syria, notably an influential version of theEpic of Gilgamesh.     'EUROPEAN ECONOMY' appears four times a year, in March, July, September and November. The November issue contains the Com­ mission's proposal for the annual report on the economic situation in the Community. This report, which the Council adopts in the fourth quarter of each year, establishes the economic policy guidelines to be followed by the Member States in the year that follows. The November issue also contains the Commissian's annual economic review, the back­ ground analysis to the proposed annual report. In March and September, 'European Economy' gives a review of the current economic situation in the Community, together with reports and studies on problems of current interest for economic policy. The July issue presents a report on the Community's borrowing and lending activities in the preceding year. Two supplements accompany the main periodical: Series A-'Economic trends' appears monthly except in August and describes with the aid of tables and graphs the most recent trends of industrial production, consumer prices, unemployment, the balance of trade, exchange rates, and other indicators. This supplement also presents the Commission staff's macroeconomic forecasts and Commission communications to the Council on economic policy. Series B-'Business survey results' gives the main results (orders, stocks, production outlook, etc.) of opinion surveys of industrial chief executives in the Community, and other business cycle indicators. Indeed, there was no such thing as Germany in the Middle Ages. No term in medieval German existed for what we now know as "Germany." It was only in the 1500s that the term Deutschland came to be used and the term received its nationalistic ring only in the nineteenth century. The land and the people whose medieval history is to be the subject of this course were known by a great variety of names. Most of the provinces of which modern Germany is made up were incorporated into the Frankish Empire, a process completed only during the reign of Charlemagne (768-814). In 800, Charlemagne adopted the title of "emperor of the Romans," but in the tenth century, the eastern parts of his empire came to be known as the East Frankish kingdom, united since 961 with the Lombard kingdom consisting of northern Italy and augmented by the Saxon conquests of the Slavic territories in the East, across the Elbe River. It was only during the eleventh century that the term regnum Teutonicum ("the kingdom of the Germans") came to be used.
