Arts and Design Studies www.iiste.org ISSN 2224-6061 (Paper) ISSN 2225-059X (Online) Vol.83, 2020 Gandang Tasa: The King of Processional Music in Minangkabau Yunaidi Asril ⃰ Karawitan Department, Faculty of Performing Arts Institut Seni Indonesia Padangpanjang Abstract Gandang tasa is a genre of traditional percussion music that continues to dominate various traditional and religious processions in Minangkabau, West Sumatra. Its musical power rests only on the performance of the rhythmic patterns of the gendang and tasa , which are played simultaneously and in an impulsive manner. The music is loud, energetic, and played in an open arena, either in the form of a procession or in an outdoor performance. The goal of this article is to discuss the dominant role of gandang tasa in various traditional and religious ritual processions in the Minangkabau community. The research method is a case study which focuses on the presence of gandang tasa in various ritual processions. The research results show that the loud, energetic character of the music, and the musical power of the rhythmic patterns played by the gandang tasa have led this music to dominate traditional and religious ritual processions in Minangkabau. Introduction The people of Minangkabau have a variety of traditional music that is used in different traditional and religious ritual processions. Some ensembles, such as talempong, gandang oguang, gandang sarunai, gamad, katumbak, and gandang katipik , are used only for traditional ritual processions. Other ensembles are used solely for (Islamic) religious rituals; these include rabano , pano , and other similar genres using the frame drum. -

Historically, the Minangkabau migrants have coexisted peacefully with local communities in which they settle, and there is no record of conflict between the Minangkabau migrants and local inhabitants. This study attempted to determine the values espoused by this nomadic community. The study was grounded in literature study approach of philosophical hermeneutics and utilized methodical elements, such as description, induction deduction, synthesis analysis, and heuristics. The study also applied observation, and interviews with the Minangkabau migrants. The findings revealed that the culture of this ethnic group explicitly encourages young people to venture abroad. The ethical values that form the basis of the outmigration’s of the Minangkabau community are affirmed by the adat (local) proverbs that prescribe strong work ethics, mutual respect, and an understanding of the local culture to which they outmigrate. Accepted: June 10, 2018 Abstract The goal of this article is to bring to light lareh nan bunta as a form of representation of the sys- tem of democracy – or power – developed by Dt. Nan Sakelap Dunia. The discussion in this paper uses a qualitative method which is backed up by quantitative data. The data was collected through participant observation, interviewing, discussion, and analysis. The analysis was car- ried out using a descriptive method using theoretical reasoning, with knowledge of aesthetics and art. The results of the research show that conceptually, talempong basaua is a musical reality which represents lareh nan bunta in Luhak 50 Koto Minangkabau. Lareh nan bunta is a synthesis of the influence of power – or dialectic – between lareh kotopiliang (autocracy) and lareh bodicaniago (democracy), each with its own system of leadership. The dualism in the autocratic and demo- cratic systems of power form a balancing power known as lareh nan bunta – a combination of all three existing conceptions. Lareh nan bunta is also reflected in the concept of musical aesthetics in talempong basaua in Luhak 50 Koto Minangkabau. Talempong basaua represents a combination of two musical concepts, namely talempong and the rhythms or irama of dendang (vocal music), which are combined to create a new genre. -

This study traced the patterns of social relations within the internal Chinese Muslim community along with their social, political, and religious problems that often colour the life of this minority. The method used in this study is religious research with the approach of research on religion. The data for this research were collected through interview, observation, documentation, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The data were analyzed based on the views from several informants validated by triangulation method. The results show that West Sumatran PITI plays a significant role in the social context in the form of managing Chinese muallaf (muslim converts), providing temporary shelters for them who are isolated and rejected by their family, providing parenting style guidance and legal advocacy for their marriage with a local citizen, and practising funeral service through the local tradition of malakok. In the political context, the strategic roles of West Sumatran PITI can be seen from the national political policies towards Chineses ethnicity, the political interaction of Chinese and Minangkabau ethnicity, and the neutrality of Chinese Muslims in local politics. -

Amril Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia, Depok, Indonesia ABSTRACT: Perkampungan Adat Nagari Sijunjung is a representation of the township and the matrilineal culture of Minangkabau society. Located in Sijunjung, which lies between two rivers, the Batang Sukam and the Batang Kulampi, in an area covered by forests, the village was designated as a Cultural Heritage Site by a decree of the Sijunjung Head District number 188.45/243/KPTS-BPT-2014. Therefore, anything related to the management of the settlement should conform to the cultural heritage preservation principles. In general, the principles can be effectively applied to a protected site, even though it was uninhabited or already in ruin when discovered. However, Nagari Sijunjung is an inhabited locale where people have been living there for generations. The issue focuses on how to manage a living cultural heritage site while at the same time allowing rooms for the community to grow and expand. This paper endeavours to provide a management model for a cultural heritage site that functions as a living monument. 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background Perkampungan Adat Nagari Sijunjung is one of the indigenous settlements in West Sumatra. Located between two rivers, the Batang Sukam and the Batang Kulampi, this village has fertile soil good for farming. The forest surrounding the village also adds to the beauty of the Nagari Sijunjung landscape.
