PC19 Doc. 14.3 CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN ENDANGERED SPECIES OF WILD FAUNA AND FLORA ____________ Nineteenth meeting of the Plants Committee Geneva (Switzerland), 18-21 April 2011 Amendments to the Appendices MADAGASCAR (DECISION 15.97) 1. This document has been prepared by the Nomenclature Specialist of the Plants Committee in consultation with Madagascar*. The annex to this document is provided in the language in which it was submitted. Decision 15.97 2. The fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties adopted Decision 15.97 which states: Directed to Madagascar and to the Plants Committee a) Review and gather further information on the succulent taxa proposed for listing at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties but not adopted; b) Review and gather further information on species (including tree species) which would benefit from CITES listing; c) Identify mechanisms to help build capacity to carry out non-detriment findings for currently listed species; and, d) Report on their work at the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties and, if necessary, prepare proposals to amend the Appendices for submission at that meeting. Implementation for tree species 3. Subparagraph b) directs Madagascar and the Plants Committee to gather information on additional species which would benefit from CITES listing. To help facilitate this process in the selection of tree species for CITES listings this document brings together relevant data on species of Dalbergia and Diospyros likely to be endemic to the island of Madagascar. Annex 1 and 2 includes tables which summaries, inter alia, the information collated to date on taxonomy, distribution and conservation status. -

Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

Microsorum 3 tohieaense can be distinguished from other French Polynesian Microsorum by the combination of sori that are distributed more or less in a single line between the costae and margins, apical pinna wider than lateral pinnae, and round rhizome scales with entire margins. Genetic evidence is also presented for the first time supporting the hybrid origin of Microsorum 3 maximum (Microsorum grossum 3 Microsorum punctatum), and possibly indicating a hybrid origin for the Hawaiian endemic Microsorum spectrum. The implications of hybridization for the taxonomy of microsoroid ferns are discussed, and a key to the microsoroid ferns of the Society Islands is provided. Abstract: Microsorum species produce a high amount of phytoecdysteroids (PEs), which are widely used in traditional medicine in the Pacific islands. The PEs in two different Microsorum species, M. punctatum (MP) and M. scolopendria (MS), were examined using high-performance liquid chro- matography (HPLC). In particular, MS produces a high amount of 20-hydroxyecdysone, which is the main active compound in PEs. To identify genes for PE biosynthesis, we generated reference transcriptomes from sterile frond tissues using the NovaSeq 6000 system. CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN ENDANGERED SPECIES OF WILD FAUNA AND FLORA Appendices I, II and III valid from 22 December 2011 Interpretation 1. Species included in these Appendices are referred to: a) by the name of the species; or b) as being all of the species included in a higher taxon or designated part thereof. 2. The abbreviation “spp.” is used to denote all species of a higher taxon. 3. Other references to taxa higher than species are for the purposes of information or classification only. The common names included after the scientific names of families are for reference only. They are intended to indicate the species within the family concerned that are included in the Appendices. In most cases this is not all of the species within the family. 4. The following abbreviations are used for plant taxa below the level of species: a) “ssp.” is used to denote subspecies; and b) “var(s).” is used to denote variety (varieties). 5. As none of the species or higher taxa of FLORA included in Appendix I is annotated to the effect that its hybrids shall be treated in accordance with the provisions of Article III of the Convention, this means that artificially propagated hybrids produced from one or more of these species or taxa may be traded with a certificate of artificial propagation, and that seeds and pollen (including pollinia), cut flowers, seedling or tissue cultures obtained in vitro, in solid or liquid media, transported in sterile containers of these hybrids are not subject to the provisions of the Convention.
