Hughes: Branding Brussels Musically: Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism in the Interwar Years (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) In Belgium, constructions of musical life in Brussels between the World Wars varied widely: some viewed the city as a major musical center, and others framed the city as a peripheral space to its larger neighbors. Both views, however, based the city’s identity on an intense interest in new foreign music, with works by Belgian composers taking a secondary importance. This modern and cosmopolitan concept of cultural achievement offered an alternative to the more traditional model of national identity as being built solely on creations by native artists sharing local traditions. Such a model eluded a country with competing ethnic groups: the Francophone Walloons in the south and the Flemish in the north. Openness to a wide variety of music became a hallmark of the capital’s cultural identity. As a result, the forces of Belgian cultural identity, patriotism, internationalism, interest in foreign culture, and conflicting views of modern music complicated the construction of Belgian cultural identity through music. By focusing on the work of the four central people in the network of organizers, patrons, and performers that sustained the art music culture in the Belgian capital, this dissertation challenges assumptions about construction of musical culture.

    Voici des fleurs is a group exhibition imbued with the artistic legacy of Akarova (born Marguerite Acarin, 1904-1999), a celebrated Bruxelloise of the interwar years who devoted her life entirely to music, dance, choreography, painting and sculpture. La Loge invites contemporary artists Lili Dujourie, Anne Hardy, Pauline Curnier Jardin, Hanne Lippard, Caroline Mesquita, Jurgen Persijn & Ana Torfs, and Leen Voet to exhibit alongside Akarova’s work and to freely relate to her ideas and production dynamics. There are, of course, innumerable ways to engage with the art and legacy of the artist, but La Loge’s ambition or mission is not to adopt a historicist, documentary, or archival response. Instead, Voici des fleurs has been developed with and by contemporary artists as an attempt to reassess the potential of Akarova’s archive, not only as a subject of research, but above all as an invitation to indulge in its repository of living materials; the vestiges of an animated artistic practice. Voici des fleurs is not concerned with ‘re-evaluating’ or lending legitimacy to Akarova’s work. Its motivation is rather to expose and explore the free gestures and spontaneous attitude that underpinned and drove her art-making, while affirming core positions and dynamics within (contemporary) art practices. Akarova was an active personality who stepped up and made things happen. Through her charismatic presence, unrelenting drive and sheer energy, she managed to play a central role in the cultural life of the local arts community (she was, for instance, close to some of the key figures making the scene of the interwar years in Brussels such as Marcel-Louis Baugniet (first husband), Anto Carte, Raymond Duncan (who regularly visited Brussels), Jean-Jules Eggericx, Henry Van de Velde, and Herman Teirlinck among many others), while still safeguarding her independent position and artistic integrity.

MEDIATION 2 7 ARTS, Belgian avant-garde, 1922 — 1928 In 1922, three young men founded the avant-garde magazine 7 Arts to promote the arts and in particular the synthesis of all the arts as only architecture and cinema can achieve. Pierre Bourgeois, a poet, his brother Victor, an architect, and the painter Pierre-Louis Flouquet were soon joined by the composer Georges Monier and Karel Maes, painter, engraver and furniture designer. “The five” succeeded in harnessing the vital forces of the Belgian avant-garde and in placing their magazine at the very heart of the European avant-garde. Throughout the six years of publication the pages of the magazine provided a platform for the principal protagonists of the Belgian and international artistic scene: De Stijl, the Bauhaus, the Purists, the Constructivists, the Futurists and many other champions of the geometric abstraction to which they gave the name Plastique pure or ‘Pure Plastic’. Their ambition was to have the arts penetrate every dimension of modern urban life and to transform it in the process. In 2020, the CIVA is devoting a retrospective exhibition to 7 Arts, the impressive adventure that this work presents.

    Pauvreté-Précarité Aides et adresses utiles Bruxelles 2016 Préambule Nous le savons, les conditions de naissance et de vie au quotidien de l’enfant ont des conséquences importantes sur sa santé générale. Dans sa famille, dans son lieu de vie, divers éléments vont interagir, sur son développement et son bien-être. Le cumul et l’interaction de facteurs matériels, affectifs, culturels, sociaux et environnementaux seront déterminants. De nombreux écrits attestent que la pauvreté et la précarité vécues par les familles affectent l’évolution de l’enfant sur le plan de son bien-être psychosocial, de sa participation, de sa santé et son éducation. Elles peuvent compromettre ses perspectives d’avenir. Les mouvances actuelles économiques, sociales et familiales sont des facteurs qui contribuent à aggraver les situations de pauvreté-précarité. A Bruxelles, près de 28% des enfants vivent sous le seuil du risque de pauvreté et ce, sans prendre en considération le coût plus élevé des besoins de base tels que le logement. 1 La population est en demande d’aide. Les besoins évoluent. Tout comme le Service d’Aide à la Jeunesse, d’autres services d’aide aux familles voient les demandes liées à la pauvreté-précarité affluer. Face à une information morcelée, la section de prévention générale du SAJ de Bruxelles propose ce répertoire d’adresses. Cet outil pédagogique guidera les travailleurs psychosociaux dans leurs recherches de services vers lesquels orienter les familles et les enfants vivant une situation de pauvreté-précarité. Il aborde des domaines complexes tels que le logement et le surendettement à Bruxelles et reprend d’autres besoins primaires tels que la nourriture, l’hygiène, les vêtements, l’ameublement, et les soins.

B-1050 Brussels La Loge invites contemporary artists Lili Dujourie, Anne Hardy, +32 (0)2 644 42 48 Pauline Curnier Jardin, Hanne Lippard, Caroline Mesquita, Jurgen [email protected] Persijn & Ana Torfs, and Leen Voet to exhibit alongside Akarova’s work and to freely relate to her ideas and production dynamics. There are, of course, innumerable ways to engage with the art and legacy of the artist, but La Loge’s ambition or mission is not to adopt a historicist, documentary, or archival response. Instead, Voici des fleurs has been developed with and by contemporary artists as an attempt to reassess the potential of Akarova’s archive, not only as a subject of research, but above all as an invitation to indulge in its repository of living materials; the vestiges of an animated artistic practice. Voici des fleurs is not concerned with ‘re-evaluating’ or lending legitimacy to Akarova’s work. Its motivation is rather to expose and explore the free gestures and spontaneous attitude that underpinned and drove her art-making, while affirming core positions and dynamics within (contemporary) art practices. Akarova was an active personality who stepped up and made things happen.
