The biological diversity on these islands is unknown and so a rapid assessment was conducted in January 2014 as part as a region wide assessment to determine the butterfly diversity on two of these islands, Biobio and Agbasiagba. Diversity indices were computed for both islands using the Shannon-Weiner index, Margalef’s index for richness and Whittaker’s index for comparison of diversity between the two islands. A total of eight hundred and eighty-one (881) individual butterflies representing forty-five (45) species belonging to eight (8) families were recorded during the study. Thirty-nine (39) species of butterflies were recorded on Biobio island whiles twenty-eight (28) species were recorded on Agbasiagba. This was expected as the larger islands are expected to support more species than smaller ones, with Biobio island being relatively bigger than Agbasiagba. The shared species of butterflies on both islands were twenty-two (22) representing 48.9% of the total species accumulated. Indicator species like Junonia oenone, Danaus chrysippus and Papilio demodocus were also recorded indicating the degraded floral quality of the Islands. -

The original description of almost every name in this catalogue has been examined for the correct reference, and where the sex or habitat was wrongly quoted, the necessary correction has been made. -

PART 3. BUTTERFLIES OF THE CHYULU RANGE. A systematic list of the species taken by the Museum Expedition to the Hills. April-July, 1938. By V. G. L. VAN SOMEREN,F.L.S., F.R.E.S., Etc. INTRODUCTION. The following account of the Lepidoptera (Rhopaloc.era) taken by members of the Museum Expedition to the Chyulu Range, is mainly a systematic list of the species obtained. At the time of the visit, April to July, 1938 (that is just toward the end, and after the long rains) insect life was remark• ably scarce, and although systematic search was made over all portions of the hills from 3,000 to 7,000 feet, at no time were butterflies numerous. The material taken can be considered representative of the range for that particular season, but there is little doubt that insect life would be more plentiful just after the short rains, as it undoubtedly is on the surrounding plains, especially in the Kibwezi- Voi areas. In spite of the paucity of insect life, certain new records have been established, thus Papilio hornimani is recorded for the first time from within Kenya boundaries, although known for many years to inhabit the forests of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Charaxes ful• vescens nr. acuminatus, also of Tanganyika, was taken on the range. Two new races of Liptenines of the genus Pentila are recorded, whilst a new ACTaea,a new Papilio, and a new race of Amauris are described. The Lepidoptera collected have a definite relationship to the vegetational zones and the distribution of certain plant species at various altitudes and portions of the hills. -

Doctor's Dissertation ISSN 1401-6249, ISBN 91-576-5701-7 The sweet potato butterfly (Acraea acerata Hew.) has become an important pest on sweet potato in Southern Ethiopia in the last two decades. This thesis deals with its ecology and economic importance in Southern Ethiopia. The insect is indigenous to this area where it feeds on both native wild Ipomoea species and the introduced sweet potato (I. batatas). However, its performance was better on the new host, sweet potato. The small A. acerata populations on the scattered patches of the native Ipomoea species evidently contribute little to the population dynamics of A. acerata in sweet potato fields. Several parasitoid species attack the immatures of A. acerata. Larvae are attacked by two parasitic wasps and a parasitic fly while a third parasitic wasp kills the pupae. Late instar larvae die from Beaicveria bassiana infection. Mortalities inflicted by the natural enemies were usually low and they did not seem to act in a direct density dependent way. -

The forests are considered one of the ‘IBAs’ (Important Bird Areas) of Eastern Africa and two of these areas have been listed as IBAs: The North Nandi and the South Nandi Forests. The preliminary survey has yielded a total of 891 species of native plants and animals (birds, butterflies and dragonflies) from the forest patches on the estates. This species tally is expected to rise significantly as the surveys continued and over 1000 species of flora and fauna are likely to be recorded from the target groups being studied with further monitoring over the longer term. Surveys of the forests over the past year (2010) have yielded a checklist of 125 butterfly species, 47 dragonflies and damselflies, 247 bird species, 96 trees, shrubs and lianas, and 376 wildflowers and herbs. The bird diversity so far recorded represents around 22 % of the total bird diversity of Kenya. This is a significant figure and includes many Western Kenya forest-dependent species such as the Black-and-White Casqued Hornbill (found in all the main forest patches on most of the estates). -

Hurst2 1Department of Genetics, University of Cambridge, Downing Street, Cambridge CB2 3EH, UK 2Department of Biology, University College London, 4 Stephenson Way, London NW1 2HE, UK Inherited bacterial symbionts from the genus Wolbachia have attracted much attention by virtue of their ability to manipulate the reproduction of their arthropod hosts. The potential importance of these bacteria has been underlined by surveys, which have estimated that 17% of insect species are infected. We examined whether these surveys have systematically underestimated the proportion of infected species through failing to detect the low-prevalence infections that are expected when Wolbachia distorts the sex ratio. We estimated the proportion of species infected with Wo l b a c h i a within Acraea butter£ies by testing large collections of each species for infection. Seven out of 24 species of Acraea were infected with Wolbachia. Four of these were infected with Wolbachia at high prevalence, a ¢gure compatible with previous broad-scale surveys, whilst three carried low-prevalence infections that would have had a very low like- lihood of being detected by previous sampling methods. This led us to conclude that sex-ratio-distorting Wolbachia may be common in insects that have an ecology and/or genetics that permit the invasion of these parasites and that previous surveys may have seriously underestimated the proportion of species that are infected. -

Anikwe Entomology Unit, Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria; [email protected] Abstract Heavy metal contamination of soils used for crop cultivation constitutes danger to biodiversity conservation and environmental health. This study therefore investigated heavy metal accumulation in soils used for vegetable cultivation and their effects on the diversity and abundance of arthropods. Analysis of soil samples collected from selected plots used for leafy vegetable cultivation viz; Corchorus olitorius L. (Tiliaceae), Amaranthus hybridus (Amaranthaceae) and Celosia argentea (Amaranthaceae) showed different levels of heavy metal contamination. Insect abundance and diversity from each vegetable plant was also recorded. Zinc was the most accumulated with concentrations ranging from 3.06 mg/kg to 4.99 mg/kg. Copper was next with concentration ranging from 0.71 mg/kg to 0.95 mg/kg in the soil. Cadmium was the least accumulated of all the heavy metals in soils from the three vegetable sites. A total of 22 different insect species were recorded at different physiological growths of leafy vegetables at the study area in 2011/2012 cropping seasons. Hymenia recurvalis was the most abundant insect pest species ranging from 34.86 in A. hybridus to 16.96 in C. Olitorius in 2011. The insect pests’ incidence had a similar trend for both years. The concentration of heavy metals from this study did not exceed safe limits, hence there was a fair abundance and diversity of insects found on the leafy vegetables. -
