The biological diversity on these islands is unknown and so a rapid assessment was conducted in January 2014 as part as a region wide assessment to determine the butterfly diversity on two of these islands, Biobio and Agbasiagba. Diversity indices were computed for both islands using the Shannon-Weiner index, Margalef’s index for richness and Whittaker’s index for comparison of diversity between the two islands. A total of eight hundred and eighty-one (881) individual butterflies representing forty-five (45) species belonging to eight (8) families were recorded during the study. Thirty-nine (39) species of butterflies were recorded on Biobio island whiles twenty-eight (28) species were recorded on Agbasiagba. This was expected as the larger islands are expected to support more species than smaller ones, with Biobio island being relatively bigger than Agbasiagba. The shared species of butterflies on both islands were twenty-two (22) representing 48.9% of the total species accumulated. Indicator species like Junonia oenone, Danaus chrysippus and Papilio demodocus were also recorded indicating the degraded floral quality of the Islands. -

From the analysis of the database, distribution areas of this insect were expanding during 8 years,and speed of expansion was not so fast. Two species of parasitic wasps,Pediobius foveolatus and Nothoserphus afissae, were identified from E. varivestis. It was founded from the high percentage of parasitism that these wasps might be the cause of decreasing injury by this insect,and these native natural enemies may suppress the density of E. varivestis. Forest Plant Quarantine Station in Southeast Guizhou, Kaili 556001China; 3.Institute of Forest Ecology Environment and Protection, Chinese Academy of Forestry, Beijing 100091China Abstract[ Objective] The paper was to study the community structure and diversity of ladybugs in Baihualing of Gaoligong Mountain, and fill gaps in research about ladybugs in this region.[ Method ] Using sampling plot investigation method, the species composition and population structure of ladybugs in Baihualing of Gaoligong Mountain were surveyed.[ Result ] A total of 3 218 ladybugs specimens had been collectedbelonging to 5 subfamilies , 20 genera , 56 species. Two spe- cies were new records for Yunnan Province. The species and number of Coccinellinae were the greatest, followed by Epilachninae and Aspidimerinaewhile Coccid- ulinae and Scymninae were the least. The dominant species were Coccinella septempunctata L.Harmonia eucharis (Mulsant) and Afissula hydrangeae Pang et Mao.[ Conclusion] The study laid foundation for further study on ladybugs in Baihualing of Gaoligong Mountain. To develop pertinent research objectives, background information on this pest was gathered from literature sources and personal communications with growers, extension agents and other agricultural professionals. In objective one, Mexican bean beetle preference, developmental success and plant injury were compared among three snap bean and three lima bean cultivars in field and greenhouse trials. The cultivar ‘Dragon’s Tongue’ was the most preferred, suitable for development, and prone to injury. Growers may benefit from growing less susceptible cultivars, or by using ‘Dragon’s Tongue’ in trap cropping or push-pull strategies. In objective two, Mexican bean beetle densities, feeding injury, and yield were compared among snap beans grown on metallized plastic (highly reflective), white plastic, black plastic, and bare soil. Metallized plastic provided the greatest level of control, and resulted in the highest yields. -

DHARMARETNAM* Department of Zoology, Eastern University, Chenkalady (Received: 03 September 2001 ;accepted: 01 July 2002) Abstract: Epilachninae is a phytophagous group among the Coccinellidae and some species are major pests causing extensive damage to leaves and fruits of crops. The identification of the Epilachna species found in Sri Lanka has been erroneously reported in locally available literature. Two species of Epilachna were found in Batticaloa where the study was carried out: E. septima on cucurbits and E. vigintioctopunctata on brinjal. The identification of these two species is not based on the number of black markings on the elytra as stated in local literature but on other morphological characters, which include the shape of the elytra and the genital structures. The number of black spots varies among the progeny, 6 spots being the commonest. The biology of E. septima is also presented. Key words: Bionomics, Coccinellidae, elytral spots, Epilachna, identification, Sri Lanka. INTRODUCTION Subfamily Epilachninae is a herbivorous group in a largely predacious family Coccinellidae. They are pests on Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae. Both adults and larvae cause extensive damage to leaves of host plants. Species in the genus Epilachna are typically orange to ochre in colour with a varying number of black spots on the pronotum and elytra. The genus is distributed throughout the world and includes several hundred species. Some species are considered as major pests causing extensive damage to leaves and fruits of host plants. -
