BEVEZETÉS ÉS CÉLKITŰZÉS Az Origanum nemzetség a jelenlegi nemzetközi kutatási irányvonalak között hangsúlyos és intenzíven vizsgált taxonként szerepel (KINTZIOS, 2002). Aktualitása elméleti szempontból rendkívül nagymértékű morfológiai és kémiai diverzitására, gyakorlati szempontból az Origanum fajok fűszerként megnövekedett mértékű felhasználására (oregano és majoránna) vezethető vissza (SZABÓ és mtsai., 1998). Több nemzetközi együttműködést hívott létre e diverzitás feltárása iránti igény; korábban az IPGRI (International Plant Genetic Resources Institute) szentelt külön figyelmet az európai Origanum populációk felmérésére, később LUKAS és munkatársai (2012) kutatócsoportja irányításával valósult meg átfogó munka, melynek a hazánkban általunk felderített közönséges szurokfű populációk közül három képezte részét. A hazai Origanum vulgare populációk morfológiai variabilitását – SOÓ és BORHIDI (1968) feldolgozását követően – az elmúlt 47 évben nem vizsgálták, kémiai változatosságuk pedig alig ismert (OSZAGYÁN és mtsai., 1996, OSZAGYÁN, 1999). Az újabb nemzetközi tudományos eredmények tükrében a faj nemcsak illóolaj forrásként, hanem egyéb, nem illó komponenseinek köszönhetően számos új területen biológiai aktivitással rendelkező, perspektivikus növényi alapanyagként szerepel (LIĈINA és mtsai., 2013; MIRON és mtsai., 2010). IETSWAART (1980) jelenleg elfogadott taxonómiai rendszere szerint hazánk területén az Origanum vulgare subsp. vulgare fordul elő. A nemzetséggel

We explore trends and patterns in the electronic trade of these unique genetic resources and in their involvement in wildlife tourism, the ways these two activities are performed and the associated potential threats on the plants’ wild populations, and we also identify priority taxa requiring special attention. The main part of the study was conducted in 2016–2017 using English as a search language; an additional search was conducted in 2019 using German and French. Results: We found e-commerce for 28 (13%) endemic taxa. These are traded by 65 nurseries from 14 countries, the UK primarily. Among the traded plants, 16 face extinction risk and/or are under protection status. Prices vary largely for the same taxon and form of sale. Lamiaceae is the family with the highest number of e-traded taxa, Tulipa bakeri is the most traded species, and the living plant is the commonest form of sale. Thirty-seven endemic taxa are advertised in the websites of travel agencies involved in wildlife tourism. Tulipa doerferi is the most frequently encountered taxon in these websites, whereas Lamiaceae, Liliaceae and Orchidaceae are similarly represented.

We developed a novel concept which resulted in the culinary use of the infusion, the leaves and/or inflorescences of this perennial herb in modern sweet and savoury dishes of Mediterranean cuisine (five case-studies are described and illustrated). Our study expands the use of a unique and beneficial herb (Origanum dictamnus) rendering it as a new spicy ingredient suitable for gastronomic experimentation. The promotion of new uses for this traditionally used medicinal plant (currently cultivated only at small scale on the island of Crete) (i) offers new ingredients to international gastronomy, (ii) may prove to be beneficial for local economies, and (iii) supports sustainable plant exploitation.

    Part 5 Pharmacology © 2002 Taylor & Francis 8 The biological/pharmacological activity of the Origanum Genus Dea Bariˇceviˇc and Tomaˇz Bartol INTRODUCTION In the past, several classifications were made within the morphologically and chemically diverse Origanum (Lamiaceae family) genus. According to different taxonomists, this genus comprises a different number of sections, a wide range of species and subspecies or botanical varieties (Melegari et al., 1995; Kokkini, 1997). Respecting Ietswaart taxo- nomic revision (Tucker, 1986; Bernath, 1997) there exist as a whole 49 Origanum taxa within ten sections (Amaracus Bentham, Anatolicon Bentham, Brevifilamentum Ietswaart, Longitubus Ietswaart, Chilocalyx Ietswaart, Majorana Bentham, Campanulaticalyx Ietswaart, Elongatispica Ietswaart, Origanum Ietswaart, Prolaticorolla Ietswaart) the major- ity of which are distributed over the Mediterranean. Also, 17 hybrids between different species have been described, some of which are known only from artificial crosses (Kokkini, 1997). Very complex in their taxonomy, Origanum biotypes vary in respect of either the content of essential oil in the aerial parts of the plant or essential oil compos- ition. Essential oil ‘rich’ taxa with an essential oil content of more than 2 per cent (most commercially known oregano plants), is mainly characterised either by the domi- nant occurrence of carvacrol and/or thymol (together with considerable amounts of ␥-terpinene and p-cymene) or by linalool, terpinene-4-ol and sabinene hydrate as main components (Akgül and Bayrak, 1987; Tümen and Bas¸er, 1993; Kokkini, 1997). The Origanum species, which are rich in essential oils, have been used for thousands of years as spices and as local medicines in traditional medicine. The name hyssop (the Greek form of the Hebrew word ‘ezov’), that is called ‘za’atar’ in Arabic and origanum in Latin, was first mentioned in the Bible (Exodus 12: 22 description of the Passover ritual) (Fleisher and Fleisher, 1988).

Autumn flowers were slow to emerge from the parched ground but, nevertheless, we saw everything we expected, except in smaller quantities than we may have hoped for. We had a great week exploring the wilder parts of western Crete and many aspects of its fascinating geology, history and archaeology. Our success was due, in no small part, to the enthusiasm and good humour of the group, the interesting walks and good food. Day 1 Tuesday 17th October We arrived in Crete in mid-afternoon. The weather was sunny, settled and clear, with a temperature in the mid- twenties and it remained that way for the rest of the week. After checking into our hotel, we made the short journey to the Theriso Gorge, in the foothills of the White Mountains, a little way south of the city. We made a few brief stops in the narrow gorge, finding our first Cyclamen graecum subsp. candicum, wedged into tight crevices in the limestone. On the cliffs, we identified some of the commoner endemic plants, typical of Crete’s interesting chasmophyte flora, many of which we would encounter during the rest of the week.

This work aims to (1) explore and compile the unique diversity of floristic and ethnobotanical information on different folk use of plants in this sector and (2) provide a novel insight into the degree of knowledge transmission between the current population and their semi-nomadic forefathers. Ethnobotanical interviews and vegetation inventories were undertaken during 2014–2019. Thirty informants aged from 27 to 84 were interviewed. The ethnobotanical study revealed that the local community of Ouled Dabbeb perceived the use of 70 plant species belonging to 59 genera from 31 families for therapeutic (83%), food (49%), domestic (15%), ethnoveterinary (12%), cosmetic (5%), and ritual purposes (3%). Moreover, they were knowledgeable about the toxicity of eight taxa. Nearly 73% of reported ethnospecies were freely gathered from the wild.

Accepted 25 March, 2009 This study is designed to examine the chemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activity of the essential oil and various extracts of Origanum rotundifolium Boiss. from Turkey. The total of the 40 identified components accounted for 97.23% (GC) and 95.10% (FID) of the total oil. Major components of the oil were borneol, terpinen-4-ol, and spathulenol. To determine the presence of well known and widespread phenolic compounds, water-soluble extract of O. rotundifolium was analyzed by HPLC. In the methanol-soluble extract, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, (+)-catechin, and ferulic acid were found in several quantities. Antioxidant activity of the essential oil and extracts of O. rotundifolium has been determined by four different test systems namely DPPH, β-carotene/linoleic acid, chelating effect and reducing power. A strong correlation was observed between the radical scavenging capacity and polarity of the extracts. The methanol-soluble extract which contains the most polar phytochemicals showed the strongest antioxidant effect in all test systems.
