Part 5 Pharmacology © 2002 Taylor & Francis 8 The biological/pharmacological activity of the Origanum Genus Dea Bariˇceviˇc and Tomaˇz Bartol INTRODUCTION In the past, several classifications were made within the morphologically and chemically diverse Origanum (Lamiaceae family) genus. According to different taxonomists, this genus comprises a different number of sections, a wide range of species and subspecies or botanical varieties (Melegari et al., 1995; Kokkini, 1997). Respecting Ietswaart taxo- nomic revision (Tucker, 1986; Bernath, 1997) there exist as a whole 49 Origanum taxa within ten sections (Amaracus Bentham, Anatolicon Bentham, Brevifilamentum Ietswaart, Longitubus Ietswaart, Chilocalyx Ietswaart, Majorana Bentham, Campanulaticalyx Ietswaart, Elongatispica Ietswaart, Origanum Ietswaart, Prolaticorolla Ietswaart) the major- ity of which are distributed over the Mediterranean. Also, 17 hybrids between different species have been described, some of which are known only from artificial crosses (Kokkini, 1997). Very complex in their taxonomy, Origanum biotypes vary in respect of either the content of essential oil in the aerial parts of the plant or essential oil compos- ition. Essential oil ‘rich’ taxa with an essential oil content of more than 2 per cent (most commercially known oregano plants), is mainly characterised either by the domi- nant occurrence of carvacrol and/or thymol (together with considerable amounts of ␥-terpinene and p-cymene) or by linalool, terpinene-4-ol and sabinene hydrate as main components (Akgül and Bayrak, 1987; Tümen and Bas¸er, 1993; Kokkini, 1997). The Origanum species, which are rich in essential oils, have been used for thousands of years as spices and as local medicines in traditional medicine. The name hyssop (the Greek form of the Hebrew word ‘ezov’), that is called ‘za’atar’ in Arabic and origanum in Latin, was first mentioned in the Bible (Exodus 12: 22 description of the Passover ritual) (Fleisher and Fleisher, 1988). -

S. Hitchcock and Paul C. Standley published their succinct manual in 1919 for the identification of the vascular flora in the Washington, DC, area. A comparable new manual has long been needed. As with their work, such a manual should be produced through a collaborative effort of the region’s botanists and other experts. The Annotated Checklist is offered as a first step, in the hope that it will spark and facilitate that effort. In preparing this checklist, Shetler has been responsible for the taxonomy and nomenclature and Orli for the database. We have chosen to distribute the first part in preliminary form, so that it can be used, criticized, and revised while it is current and the second part (Monocotyledons) is still in progress. Additions, corrections, and comments are welcome. We hope that our checklist will stimulate a new wave of fieldwork to check on the current status of the local flora relative to what is reported here. When Part II is finished, the two parts will be combined into a single publication. We also maintain a Web site for the Flora of the Washington-Baltimore Area, and the database can be searched there (http://www.nmnh.si.edu/botany/projects/dcflora). -

Due to this circumstance, several studies have been conducted that evaluate the pesticidal potency of plant-derived essential oils. This review presents the pesticidal efficiency of essential oils isolated from different genera of the Lamiaceae family including Agastache Gronovius, Hyptis Jacquin, Lavandula L., Lepechinia Willdenow, Mentha L., Melissa L., Ocimum L., Origanum L., Perilla L., Perovskia Kar., Phlomis L., Rosmarinus L., Salvia L., Satureja L., Teucrium L., Thymus L., Zataria Boissier, and Zhumeria Rech. Along with acute toxicity, the sublethal effects were illustrated such as repellency, antifeedant activity, and adverse effects on the protein, lipid, and carbohydrate contents, and on the esterase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes. Chemical profiles of the introduced essential oils and the pesticidal effects of their main components have also been documented including terpenes (hydrocarbon monoterpene, monoterpenoid, hydrocarbon sesquiterpene, and sesquiterpenoid) and aliphatic phenylpropanoid. -

Epling vegetative organs. For this purpose, leaves, stems and roots of the endangered Lamiaceae were collected from a population located in Santo Antão, Santa Maria municipality, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Results demonstrated that the H. ringens leaf blade presents glandular and non-glandular trichomes as well as two morphs of diallelocytic stomata, which are usually found above the epidermis level. The petiole is concave on ventral face and convex on its dorsal face, containing glandular and non-glandular trichomes as well as stomata in the epidermis. -

The neuroprotective and anti-ageing potentials of essential oils (EOs) are widely evaluated around the globe. The objective of this review is to analyse the effectiveness of EOs as neuroprotective remedies among the four common age-related neurodegenerative diseases. The literature was extracted from three databases (PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar) between the years of 2010 to 2020 using the medical subject heading (MeSH) terms “essential oil”, crossed with “Alzheimer’s disease (AD)”, “Huntington’s disease (HD)”, “Parkinson’s disease (PD)” or “amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)”. Eighty three percent (83%) of the studies were focused on AD, while another 12% focused on PD. No classifiable study was recorded on HD or ALS. EO from Salvia officinalis has been recorded as one of the most effective acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitors. However, only Cinnamomum sp. -
