Ioannina, built in the banks of Lake Pamvotida, is a beautiful and picturesque city that combines the historical memories, along with the reality of the modern megalopolis. It is the city of legends, tradition and silversmiths. In the green waters of the lake, the legend of Ali-Pasa and Kira- Frosini come alive while in the beautiful streets in the castle of the city, the memories of the Byzantine past and newer history dominate. It is also a modern city, the most important economic and intellectual centre of NW Greece, with appreciable commercial activity, a univer- sity and two of the best hospitals in the country. A city with liveliness, intense juvenile mood and interesting night life! In the centre of the lake, one can see the beautiful green island, which was developed into a remarkable monastic state, in the later Byzantine years with churches and monasteries that are preserved until today. The numerous field villages, known as “Kampochoria” are scattered around the Prefecture and constitute important centres of agricultural and stock -breeding production and at the same time important elements of tourist development exist. YOUR O.A.T. ADVENTURE TRAVEL PLANNING GUIDE® Enhanced! Northern Greece, Albania & Macedonia: Ancient Lands of Alexander the Great 2022 Small Groups: 8-16 travelers—guaranteed! (average of 13) Overseas Adventure Travel ® The Leader in Personalized Small Group Adventures on the Road Less Traveled 1 Dear Traveler, At last, the world is opening up again for curious travel lovers like you and me. And the O.A.T. Enhanced! Northern Greece, Albania & Macedonia: Ancient Lands of Alexander the Great itinerary you’ve expressed interest in will be a wonderful way to resume the discoveries that bring us so much joy. You might soon be enjoying standout moments like these: As I explored the monasteries of Meteora, I stood in awe atop pinnacles perched in a boundless sky. I later learned that the Greek word meteora translates to “suspended in the air,” and that’s exactly how I felt as I stood before nature’s grandeur and the unfathomable feats of mankind. For centuries, monks and nuns have found quiet solitude within these monasteries that are seemingly built into the sandstone cliffs. You’ll also get an intimate view into two of these historic sanctuaries alongside a local guide. Could there be any place more distinct in Europe than Albania? You’ll see for yourself when you get a firsthand look into the lives of locals living in the small Albanian village of Dhoksat. First, you’ll interact with the villagers and help them with their daily tasks before sharing a Home-Hosted Lunch with a local family. While savoring the fresh ingredients of the region, you’ll discuss daily life in the Albanian countryside with your hosts.

TUBERCULOSIS IN GREECE An Experiment in the Relief and Rehabilitation of a Country By J. B. McDOUGALL, C.B.E., M.D., F.R.C.P. (Ed.), F.R.S.E.; Late Consultant in Tuberculosis, Greece, UNRRA INTRODUCTION In Greece, we follow the traditions of truly great men in all branches of science, and in none more than in the science of medicine. Charles Singer has rightly said - "Without Herophilus, we should have had no Harvey, and the rise of physiology might have been delayed for centuries. Had Galen's works not survived, Vesalius would have never reconstructed anatomy, and surgery too might have stayed behind with her laggard sister, Medicine. The Hippo- cratic collection was the necessary and acknowledged basis for the work of the greatest of modern clinical observers, Sydenham, and the teaching of Hippocrates and his school is still the substantial basis of instruction in the wards of a modern hospital." When we consider the paucity of the raw material with which the Father of Medicine had to work-the absence of the precise scientific method, a population no larger than that of a small town in England, the opposition of religious doctrines and dogma which concerned themselves largely with the healing art, and a natural tendency to speculate on theory rather than to face the practical problems involved-it is indeed remarkable that we have been left a heritage in clinical medicine which has never been excelled. Nearly 2,000 years elapsed before any really vital advances were made on the fundamentals as laid down by the Hippocratic School.

  • Tsepelovo (Epirus) with Giorgos Kapsalis
Seminar of Greek Dance with Giorgos Kapsalis and Dina Koukoufiki Epirus -Tsepelovo - Zagorochoria, 22 July – 30 July 2019 Giorgos Kapsalis and Dina Koukoufiki are organising a traditional dance workshop, which will take place in Epirus, in the village of Tsepelovo, Zagorochoria. The workshop begins on 22th July and ends on 30st July right after breakfast. Tsepelovo is one of the villages in the famous Zagori and it is located in Epirus, in the prefecture of Ioannina. Majestic canyons, stone stairs, unique bridges and endless peaks compose the image that the visitor confronts in this area. Forty-six scattered villages, like eagle's nests, spread among the mountains of Timfi, Mitsikeli and Lygkos. The seminar will be a small trip for all of us, to the special region of Epirus, with its wonderful music and songs, with its simple and strange dances. During the workshop, songs, customs and traditions will be taught mainly from different villages of the region of Epirus. There will be daily dance teaching, songs learning and traditional costumes presentation by the corresponding introducer of each region. Furthermore, we are going to have the opportunity to visit corresponding villages, to participate in feasts with the residents of the villages and to taste their local foods. In addition, during the seminar will be taught dances and songs from regions of Greece. We will be accommodated at the hotel Drakolimni www.drakolimni.com which is built with local carved stone and all its spaces have been decorated according to the traditional Zagorian architecture. Every evening, feasts will be held at the hotel or the squares of several villages.
