Extra nights in any accommodation and a night in Ioannina, plus nights in Corfu for rest and relaxation recommended. Itinerary can be adjusted to suit flights and transfers. How much walking? Full days: 10-15km per day, 3½-6½ hrs walking. Using shortening options: Only available in Papingo, where you can choose your walking to suit. Max. Grade: page 1/9 This walk concentrates on the jewel in the crown of northern Greece – mountainous Zagori (also known as Zagoria), famed for its traditional stone villages and the “deepest gorge in the world”. Route Highlights ● Zagori and its unspoilt stone villages ● The walk to the Dragon Lake ● The Vikos Gorge (all 12km and 900m deep of it) ● Overnighting in a refuge at 2000m (optional!) ● Ioannina, Ali Pasha’s seat, and its dramatic lake (add-on) We Recommend Consider nights in Corfu at either end of the walk, or stop off for a night in Ioannina, an underestimated, lively Greek city with a beautiful old quarter and dramatic lakeside setting. Spend extra days at Papingo just relaxing, and doing some short local walks. Grading Full days: 10-15km per day, 3½-6½ hrs walking.

  • Welcome to Ioannina a Multicultural City…
Welcome to Ioannina The city of Giannina, attraction of thousands of tourists every year from Greece and around the world, awaits the visitor to accommodate him with the Epirus known way, suggesting him to live a unique combination of rich past and impressive present. Built next to the legendary lake Pamvotis at 470 meters altitude, in the northwest of Greece, it is the biggest city of Epirus and one of the most populous in the country. History walks beside you through the places, the impressive landscape that combines mountain and water, museums with unique exhibits and monuments also waiting to lead you from the Antiquity to the Middle Byzantine and Late Byzantine period, the Turks, Modern History. And then ... the modern city with modern structures (University, Hospital, Airport, Modern Highway - Egnatia - Regional, local and long distance transportation, Spiritual and Cultural Centres) offer a variety of events throughout the year. Traditional and modern market, various entertainment options, dining and accommodation. A multicultural city… Ioannina arise multiculturally and multifacetedly not only through narrations. Churches with remarkable architecture, mosques and a synagogue, the largest in Greece, testify the multicultural character of the city. The coexistence of Christians, Muslims and Jews was established during the administration of Ali Pasha. The population exchange after the Minor Asia destruction and annihilation of most Jews by the Germans changed the proportions of the population. Muslims may not exist today and the Jews may be few, only those who survived the concentration camps, but the city did not throw off this part of the identity. Today, there are four mosques, three of them very well preserved, while the Jewish synagogue, built in 1826, continues to exist and be the largest and most beautiful of the surviving religious buildings of the Greek Jews.

  • Sacred Forests of the Villages of Zagori and Konitsa in Memory of Oliver Rackham (1939-2015) Ι
Sacred Forests of the villages of Zagori and Konitsa In memory of Oliver Rackham (1939-2015) Ι. Brief presentation of the element of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) 1. Name Sacred Forests of the villages of Zagori and Konitsa Other name(s): Ecclesiastical forests or Klisiast(i)ka, Vakuf(i)ka forests or Vakufa, Kouri or contracted to Kri (e.g. Kouri at Panagia or Kri of Panagia), livadia. Occasionally, the name of the trees themselves indicates that they have a special protection status (e.g. Megala Pournaria, Large Oaks). 2. Identification and definition Sacred forests are those forests that communities look after as protected areas. Collective representations define them as places of special importance for the local communities, which associate them with the local history and landscape. They are often related to the natural resources that the community conserves, because they are important for its survival. Even more often, they are forests that protect the villages from natural disaster. Some sacred forests are not directly connected to the churches or other religious buildings that can be found inside them. Yet there are others that contain within their territory churches, chapels and shrines that have a religious purpose. These forests are preserved as the inhabitants of the local communities avoid utilising them for fear of being punished by supernatural powers. Today, such parts of the planet are classified as Sacred Natural Sites, which are defined as sites of special spiritual significance for their local communities as well as sites of special bio-cultural value, globally important both for cultural diversity and biodiversity, particularly because of the natural organisms associated with the ancient trees and forests.

GAMER, I, 1 (2012) s. 37-60 A CONTRIBUTION TO THE HISTORY OF EPIRUS (XVTH-XVITH CENTURIES) -SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE PRIVILEGES GRANTED TO THE PEOPLE OF EPIRUS BY SULTAN MURAD II-* Melek Delilbaşı** Özet Epir Tarihine Katkılar (XV-XVI. Yüzyıl): Sultan Murad Tarafından Epir Halkına Verilen İmtiyazlar Yunanistan’ın kuzeybatısında yer alan Bizans’ın bağımsız eyaleti Epir bölgesinin tarihi, coğrafyasıyla sıkı bir şekilde bağlantılıdır. Epir’e ilk Osmanlı akınları XIV. yüzyılda Meriç Savaşı’ndan sonra başlamıştır (1371). Sultan I. Murad ve Bayezid zamanında Epir’in Hıristiyan prensleri vasal statüsünde haraç ödemeye başlamışlardır. Ayrıca “Voyniko” * This article is a revised version of the paper presented at the IRCICA congress in Skopje, October 13-17, 2010. ** Prof. Dr., Director of the Ankara University, Center for Southeast European Studies (GAMER). Melek Delilbaşı olarak adlandırılan Zagorya bölgesi hakkında Lamprides’in verdiği bilgilerin Osmanlı tahrir defterlerini tamamladığı tespit edilmiştir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Ahidnameler, Osmanlılar, Yanya, Zagorya, Meçova Abstract: The history of Epiros is closely connected with its geography, in the northwest of Greece, its status as an independent Byzantine province.

Walker and followers of @fascinatedbyfungi EXPEDITION TO GREECE Featuring Mushroom Foraging and Other Discoveries In Magnificent Zagori September 29 – October 8, 2020 Rewarding Walking & Hiking Opportunities OUR EXPERT MYCOPHILE Dear Traveller, We invite you on a unique journey of discovery that reveals the rich history, remarkable natural beauty and amazing diversity of Greece. Although relatively small in size, Greece possesses some of the most varied and impressive landscapes in Europe. This, combined with its magnificent past, makes Greece an alluring destination. Perhaps the most impressive and rewarding landscape is found in the country’s northwest corner, in the province of Epirus, which lies just south of the frontier between Greece and Albania. This area of remarkable beauty is the focus of our journey. Known as the Zagorochoria (the Zagori villages), it’s a place of towering mountains, thick forests, sparkling streams, and a unique natural flora that serves as the basis for traditional medical practice. Originally from Cambridge, MA, Dr. Gordon Walker moved Spread around the slopes of the mountains are delightful stone-built villages that have to California to attend UC Santa Cruz where he developed changed little through the centuries, some of which feature grand houses and frescoed a passion for scuba diving and home brewing. • Setting Metsovo the Navel of Touristic Development of Pindos
Setting Metsovo the navel of touristic development of Pindos T.D. Papazissis, Civil Engineer N.T.U.A. Abstract Metsovo is the seat of the sole municipality of Metsovo county. After the implementation of the Kapodistrias plan, the municipality of Metsovo is composed from Metsovo and the former communities of Anilio, Anthohori and Votonosi and its population is, according to the 2001 census, 4492 people. Its size is 177,676,000 m2-. From the rest of the settlements of the county of Metsovo, Milia has remained a commu- nity seat while Ampelia, Analipsi, Mili, Xiriko, Siolades and Chrissovitsa have been allocated to the municipality of Egnatia. The municipality of Metsovo borders οn the North the community of Perivoli and the municipality of Gorgiani of the district of Grevena of the Grevena prefecture. On the North- East it borders the community of Milia, on the East the municipality of Malakassi of the dis- trict of Kalabaka of the Trikala prefecture and on the West the municipalities of Egnatia and East Zagori of the district of Dodoni of the Ioannina prefecture. Two large Greek rivers spring from Metsovo, Metsovitikos, a side-river of Arahthos, and Aoos, while the flow of Pinios towards Thessalia originates in the col of Katara. The geographical position of Metsovo just described, makes access to the three famous byzantine and post-byzantine open-air museums, but also to the three important sites of the religious and spiritual upheaving of our country, Meteora in Thessalia (which are just 75 km. away), Kastoria in Macedonia (122 km) and the island of the Lake of Ioannina (60 km), very easy.
