    i REMEDIATING DEMOCRACY: YOUTUBE AND THE VERNACULAR RHETORICS OF WEB 2.0 Erin Dietel-McLaughlin A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2010 Committee: Kristine Blair, Advisor Louisa Ha Graduate Faculty Representative Michael Butterworth Lee Nickoson ii ABSTRACT Kristine Blair, Advisor This dissertation examines the extent to which composing practices and rhetorical strategies common to ―Web 2.0‖ arenas may reinvigorate democracy. The project examines several digital composing practices as examples of what Gerard Hauser (1999) and others have dubbed ―vernacular rhetoric,‖ or common modes of communication that may resist or challenge more institutionalized forms of discourse. Using a cultural studies approach, this dissertation focuses on the popular video-sharing site, YouTube, and attempts to theorize several vernacular composing practices. First, this dissertation discusses the rhetorical trope of irreverence, with particular attention to the ways in which irreverent strategies such as new media parody transcend more traditional modes of public discourse. Second, this dissertation discusses three approaches to video remix (collection, Detournement, and mashing) as political strategies facilitated by Web 2.0 technologies, with particular attention to the ways in which these strategies challenge the construct of authorship and the power relationships inherent in that construct. This dissertation then considers the extent to which sites like YouTube remediate traditional rhetorical modes by focusing on the genre of epideictic rhetoric and the ways in which sites like YouTube encourage epideictic practice. Finally, in light of what these discussions reveal in terms of rhetorical practice and democracy in Web 2.0 arenas, this dissertation offers a concluding discussion of what our ―Web 2.0 world‖ might mean for composition studies in terms of theory, practice, and the teaching of writing.

    NOTES ON THE GOLD COINAGE OF ELIZABETH I I. D. BROWN and C. H. COMBER I. Introduction THE gold coinage of Elizabeth I is a much neglected series. The account given by Kenyon in 1884 even with Montagu's additions of 1895 is incomplete and contains confusing errors.1 More recent listings in the standard works of Brooke, North, and Seaby are more accurate but rather brief.2 The latter two further suffer from inappropriate attempts to divide the series into different issues. Whitton gave the most accurate and well referenced check list of the known coins.3 The milled gold coins have been described by Borden and Brown.4 Only Kenyon and Brooke attempted to set the coinage in the context of the documented history of the mint which has been the subject of works by Ruding, Symonds, Craig, and Challis.5 In view of the increase in our understanding of the workings of the Elizabethan mint in recent years a review of this coinage is overdue. II. Numismatic History The coinage has been divided into three issues in accordance with the scheme proposed by one of us in an earlier article.6 First (Tentative) Issue (1558-1572) On 31 December 1558 Elizabeth I issued a commission to Sir Edmund Peckham authorising him to strike sovereigns (30/-), angels (10/-) and half-angels in fine gold (995 fine) and pounds (20/-), half-pounds, crowns (5/-) and half-crowns in crown gold (917 fine). Mary had struck only fine gold. Crown gold, which was a product of Henry VIII's debasement, had last been issued by Edward VI.

Stricker Stricker 1 Mohammed Mahmoud Street is the metaphoric tomb of Tahrir Square, Cairo where violent protests erupted during the Egyptian Revolution which began in 2011.1 It is on the walls of this street that Ammar Abo Bakr painted outside of his studio for the first time.2 “Lost Eyes,” a large mural commemorating the men and women who lost their eyes in clashes during a demonstration against military rule on November 19, 2011, was the first large mural that he made commemorating those who were injured during the struggle for freedom (Figure 1). Since then Bakr has continued to work on an ever evolving mural on Mohammed Mahmoud Street. While he is responsible for a great number of fascinating pieces of art this paper will focus primarily on the mural he added to the wall in May 2012—a mural of mourning mothers holding photographs of their children who died in the revolution.

Ancient Times Early Man relied on counting on his fingers and toes (which by the way, is the basis for our base 10 numbering system). He also used sticks and stones as markers. Later notched sticks and knotted cords were used for counting. Finally came symbols written on hides, parchment, and later paper. Man invents the concept of number, then invents devices to help keep up with the numbers of his possessions. Roman Empire The ancient Romans developed an Abacus, the first "machine" for calculating. While it predates the Chinese abacus we do not know if it was the ancestor of that Abacus. Counters in the lower groove are 1 x 10 n, those in the upper groove are 5 x 10 n Industrial Age - 1600 John Napier, a Scottish nobleman and politician devoted much of his leisure time to the study of mathematics. He was especially interested in devising ways to aid computations. His greatest contribution was the invention of logarithms. He inscribed logarithmic measurements on a set of 10 wooden rods and thus was able to do multiplication and division by matching up numbers on the rods. These became known as Napier’s Bones. 1621 - The Sliderule Napier invented logarithms, Edmund Gunter invented the logarithmic scales (lines etched on metal or wood), but it was William Oughtred, in England who invented the sliderule. Using the concept of Napier’s bones, he inscribed logarithms on strips of wood and invented the calculating "machine" which was used up until the mid-1970s when the first hand-held calculators and microcomputers appeared.
