AN FINE AND RARE EARLY SILVER AND SILVER GILT PRE-BALANCE SPRING KEY WIND OVAL POCKET WATCH Date: Circa 1640 Movement: Gilt full plate verge gut line fusée, single foot pierced and engraved balance cock, brass 2-arm balance, pinned, pierced and engraved fusée set up Dial: Black Roman numerals to central silver panel engraved with rural village scene, set within gilt oval panel engraved with flora, single blued hand Case: Polished silver and silver gilt oval form, band engraved with flora and winged cherub heads, winding aperture to back Signed: Movement Size: 34mm x 45mm Accompaniments: Woven cord with tasselled ends £1,000 - 1,500 €1,100 - 1,700 US$1,200 - 1,900 The Martinot family were watch and clockmakers to the French court from 1572 to 1729. This is likely to be Gilles (1622 to 1688) who is listed as working in Paris and was both Master Engraver and Clockmaker and the watch was sold in London or maybe a relative. It is a fine example of both watchmaking and engraving so likely to be 1 (two views) the former. 2 P. VAISSIERE, A CASTRES. AN EARLY FRENCH GILT KEY WIND OVAL POCKET WATCH Date: Circa 1640 Movement: Gilt full plate verge with French style fusée, single pinned foot pierced and engraved balance cock, later addition of balance spring and regulator, brass 4-arm balance wheel, No.1510 Dial: Black Roman numerals to central engraved panel depicting a nude outside a castle, set within gilt oval panel engraved with flora and winged figures, single black hand Case: Polished oval form, reeded edges to the band, engraved bow with flora, crest engraved to inner case back with floral surround Signed: Movement Size: 38mm x 50mm £3,000 - 5,000 €3,300 - 5,500 US$3,700 - 6,200 There are very few examples of watches by Vaissiere. He was working in Castres near Toulouse in the south of France; the now small town was in the 1600’s a large and bustling centre of trade and commerce and large enough to support a watchmaker producing fine watches. Very few of his watches have survived but those that do are exceptional quality as this one is, for a similar example see the Met Museum collection No.17.190.1469. 3 (two views) 4 LOUIS PREVOST. A SILVER KEY WIND PAIR CASE QUARTER REPEATING POCKET WATCH WITH CENTREPIECE COMMEMORATING THE 1707 ‘ACT OF UNION’ Date: Circa 1710 Movement: Gilt full plate fusée verge, pierced and engraved winged balance cock, plain 3-arm balance with balance spring under, silver regulation, Egyptian pillars, hammers striking on a bell Dial: Silver champlevé, central engraved panel depicting two images of Queen Anne bearing English and Scottish shields and holding hands beneath a crown and above an English rose and thistle for the 1707 ‘Act of Union’, black Roman numerals, outer minute track, gilt Louis XV style hands Case: Pierced inner and outer cases, both engraved with flora and fauna, small cartouches with engraved portraits, bell secured by 1 screw Signed: Dial & movement Size: 60mm 4 (two views) £2,000 - 3,000 €2,200 - 3,300 US$2,500 - 3,700 There are a series of very similar watches produced by different makers commemorating the 1707 Act of Union where England and Scotland joined to form a Union.
