  • Notes on the Gold Coinage of Elizabeth I
NOTES ON THE GOLD COINAGE OF ELIZABETH I I. D. BROWN and C. H. COMBER I. Introduction THE gold coinage of Elizabeth I is a much neglected series. The account given by Kenyon in 1884 even with Montagu's additions of 1895 is incomplete and contains confusing errors.1 More recent listings in the standard works of Brooke, North, and Seaby are more accurate but rather brief.2 The latter two further suffer from inappropriate attempts to divide the series into different issues. Whitton gave the most accurate and well referenced check list of the known coins.3 The milled gold coins have been described by Borden and Brown.4 Only Kenyon and Brooke attempted to set the coinage in the context of the documented history of the mint which has been the subject of works by Ruding, Symonds, Craig, and Challis.5 In view of the increase in our understanding of the workings of the Elizabethan mint in recent years a review of this coinage is overdue. II. Numismatic History The coinage has been divided into three issues in accordance with the scheme proposed by one of us in an earlier article.6 First (Tentative) Issue (1558-1572) On 31 December 1558 Elizabeth I issued a commission to Sir Edmund Peckham authorising him to strike sovereigns (30/-), angels (10/-) and half-angels in fine gold (995 fine) and pounds (20/-), half-pounds, crowns (5/-) and half-crowns in crown gold (917 fine). Mary had struck only fine gold. Crown gold, which was a product of Henry VIII's debasement, had last been issued by Edward VI.

  • Gold Jewellery in Ptolemaic, Roman and Byzantine Egypt. Jack M
Gold Jewellery in Ptolemaic, Roman and Byzantine Egypt. Jack M. Ogden ABSTRACT This study deals with the gold jewellery made and worn in Egypt during the millennium between Alexander the Great's invasion of Egypt and the Arab conquest. Funerary jewellery is largely ignored as are ornaments in the traditional, older Egyptian styles. The work draws upon a wide variety of evidence, in particular the style, composition and construction of surviving jewellery, the many repre- sentations of jewellery in wear, such as funerary portraits, and the numerous literary references from the papyri and from Classical and early Christian writers. Egypt, during the period considered, has provided a greater wealth of such information than anywhere else in the ancient or medieval world and this allows a broadly based study of jewellery in a single ancient society. The individual chapters deal with a brief historical background; the information available from papyri and other literary sources; the sources, distribution, composition and value of gold; the origins and use of mineral and organic gem materials; the economic and social organisation of the goldsmiths' trade; and the individual jewellery types, their chronology, manufacture and significance. This last section is covered in four chapters which deal respectively with rings, earrings, necklets and pendants, and bracelets and armiets. These nine chapters are followed by a detailed bibliography and a list of the 511 illustrations. Gold Jewellery in Ptolemaic, Roman and Byzantine Egypt. In two volumes Volume 1 - Text. Jack M. Ogden Ph.D. Thesis Universtity of Durham, Department of Oriental Studies. © 1990 The copyright of this thesis rests with the author.

  • Half-Sovereigns and Double Crowns
HALF-SOVEREIGNS AND DOUBLE CROWNS By F. O. ARNOLD, M.A., M.D. AFTER reading a paper on the subject of "Crowns" before the Lancashire Numismatic Society, I was suddenly asked by a certain member the following question: "Is not a double crown the same as a half sovereign? " I should imagine that many numismatists in reply to this question would almost instinctively say at once: "Oh no; they are really quite distinct; although it is true that in modern times-as indeed in more remote times-the actual cash or rather the official currency value of two crowns is and always has been the equivalent of a half sovereign." But I am not proposing to complicate the subject-matter of this paper by attempting to discuss the relationship between double crowns and their silver equivalents in value. As mentioned later, incidentally, there never have been-as we all know-in existence silver double crown pieces, unless we regard as coming within that category certain exceedingly rare silver half-pound pieces which were produced at some two out of Charles 1's various provincial mints during the two civil war years of 1642 and 1643-namely, Shrewsbury and Oxford-though at Shrewsbury they were, in fact, only minted between or during October and December 1642, as that mint was only working during that period. As I will presently indicate, however, there is a distinction to be noticed between the currency value of a half sovereign and the value of half a sovereign, during certain Tudor periods. From the aforesaid bald negative assertion one might feel tempted, or inclined, to proceed to elaborate the distinction by pointing out that neither double crowns nor crowns were ever minted out of so called" fine gold", i.e.

  • Franciscan Crown Rosary
FRANCISCAN CROWN ROSARY (THE SEVEN JOYS OF THE VIRGIN) Viceroyalty of New Spain (Oaxaca, Mexico), XVIII century Franciscan Crown Rosary (The Seven Joys of the Virgin) Viceroyalty of New Spain (Oaxaca, Mexico), XVIII century Gold, jet, and enamel Weight: 282 g (0.62 lb) Maximum length: 125 cm (49.21 in); Maximum width: 12 cm (4.72 in) The devotional practice consisting in repeating certain prayers in groups of sections that are organized in regulated number and order derives from Eastern religions, based on the idea that repeating a prayer increases its effectiveness, and has been brought to the Western world by the expansion of the Muslim Empire. In order to make it easier, closed strings of beads have been used to avoid losing them and to help complete the prayer, such as the Islamic tasbih, the Hindu and Buddhist Japamala, or the Catholic rosary or crown. In Spain and its historical, eminently Catholic territories, the use of the rosary has been universal and constant over time, until it has become one of its marks of cultural identity. Countess d'Aulnoy, on her celebrated work Un viaje por España en 1679, testified to“the constant use of the rosary here. Every lady has one attached to her waist, which is so long that it is almost dragged along the ground. They pray while walking down the street, when they play ombre, when they talk, and even when they fall in love, murmur, or lie, they pray and move their fingers from one rosary bead to another”. Even Mariana of Austria, King Charles II's mother, during the hearing that was granted to her in the Alcázar of Madrid, received the French lady carrying a large rosary in her hands.
