3. Het verwerken van aanmeldingen. 4. Het opleuken van de internetsite. He married Eva Whitear from Titchfield in 1913 and they lived at 81 West St. Titchfield. Jack served for 24 years in the 108th Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery which, as Sergeant, he left in 1926. He was a horseman par excellence and served the whole of WW1 in France and Belgium coming through numerous engagements uninjured. He was awarded a Mons Star with Clasp and Roses, British Army War Medal and Victory Medals. He left the army in 1926 and became a bricklayer and worked on the building of Titchfield Primary School and also the Embassy and Savoy cinemas in Fareham. It was ironic that despite having worked with horses throughout his army career, he died, aged 52, following an infection due to a bite from a horse fly. Donald Upshall As I was the first grandchild in the Upshall family I was named after my uncle who was killed in WW1. If you look in the church you will see his name on the remembrance plaque. My father started the garage on East Street when I was born. Now, in 2015, we've been in business 89 years. Today you don't realise how narrow the roads were then. There were no kerbs. You just walked along the edge of the road. But there wasn’t much traffic then. It is so different now of course. I remember the main A27 road. I used to push my brother in his pushchair all the way in to Fareham where they had all these Hornby toys.

ISSUE No 83 - SUMMER 2015 Thirty years ago this year, Plane Sailing Air Displays Ltd started operations with its first Catalina. Here she is over the Kent coast on February 20th 1985 at the end of the ferry flight from South Africa and inbound to RAF Manston. C ONTENTS TO J UNE 2017 AIRFIELD REVIEW The Journal of the Airfield Research Group The journal was initially called Airfield Report , then ARG Newsletter, finally becoming Airfield Review in 1985. The number of pages has varied from initially just 6, occasio- nally to up to 60 (a few issues in c.2004). Typically 44, recent journals have been 48. There appear to have been three versions of the ARG index/ table of contents produced for the magazine since its conception. The first was that by David Hall c.1986, which was a very detailed publication and was extensively cross-referenced. For example if an article contained the sentence, ‘The squadron’s flights were temporarily located at Tangmere and Kenley’, then both sites would appear in the index. It also included titles of ‘Books Reviewed’ etc Since then the list has been considerably simplified with only article headings noted. I suspect that to create a current cross-reference list would take around a day per magazine which equates to around eight months work and is clearly impractical. The second version was then created in December 2009 by Richard Flagg with help from Peter Howarth, Bill Taylor, Ray Towler and myself.

  • Brave Report Issue 21 RNAS
Issue 21 !1 Brave Report ! Royal Naval Air Service The Royal Naval Air Service or RNAS was the air arm of the Royal Navy until near the end of the First World War, when it merged with the army’s Royal Flying Corps to form a new service (the first of its kind in the world), the Royal Air Force. When the RFC was founded on April 13, 1912, it was intended to encompass all military flying. The Navy, however, was not pleased at all forms of naval aviation RN Northern Ireland - In Remembrance Issue 21 !2 being moved to an Army corps, and soon formed its own, unauthorised, flying branch with a training centre at Eastchurch. Command of this group was given over to Murray Sueter, who had been working on airship development for the navy. At the time, the Admiralty, not for nothing known as the "Senior Service", had enough political clout to ensure that this act went completely unchallenged. The Royal Naval Air Service was officially recognised on July 1, 1914 by First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill. The new service was completely separate from the RFC except for the Central Flying School, which was still used, and the RNAS became in effect a rival air force. By the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, the RNAS had more aircraft under its control than the RFC. The Navy maintained twelve airship stations around the coast of Britain from Longside, Aberdeenshire in the northeast to Anglesey in the west. In addition to seaplanes, carrier borne aircraft, and other aircraft with a legitimate "naval" application the RNAS also maintained several crack fighter squadrons on the Western Front, as well as allocating scarce resources to an independent strategic bombing force at a time when such operations were highly speculative.

  • Here Was No More Sleep for Me That Night and I Was up Early and First in the Breakfast Queue
1 TWO AIR FORCES by Jock Cassels 2 To Maureen - a truly understanding, supportive and loyal Service wife. FOREWORD The original version of this book was written for the family records and contained details of family genealogy and my early years, but as my Service friends would no doubt find the Cassels genealogy of little interest, I have omitted these details. This version only deals with my service in TWO AIR FORCES. 3 Let me start with some personal details 1. Name: Cunningham Norman McIntyre Cassels 2. Born: 11th August 1923 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland Arrived in Australia: November 1966 with my wife (Maureen), daughters (Carol and Anne) and son Charles 3. Career: Served 37 years in 2 Air Forces ( RAF 25, RAAF 12) Joined 1941 and Retired in 1979. I was never blessed with a retentive memory, and being born in 1923 the advancing years haven't helped, so I can't guarantee that I will be able to recall all of the events which would normally be included in a life story. However I will do my best to reach into the past and hopefully put together, as accurately as possible, the events which make up this story. 4 MY SERVICE YEARS - 1941-1979 RAF -1941-1996 RAAF - 1966-1979 I turned 18 on 11 August 1941 and a few days later went to the RAF recruiting office in Glasgow to offer my services for pilot training. My details were taken and I was given a railway travel voucher and told to report to the Recruiting Centre in Edinburgh on 8 September to be enlisted.

  • Short Bros. S.45 Seaford Flying Boat a Brief History Compiled by David H Clarke
Short Bros. S.45 Seaford Flying Boat A brief history compiled by David H Clarke Production Short S.45 Seaford in flight (thought to be NJ207). Photograph courtesy of 1000aircraftphotos.com The Short S.45 Seaford Mk. I was a development of the World War II Sunderland flying boat. Only eight production aircraft were built and after trials by the RAF it did not enter military service. BOAC was lent one for civilian trials and decided that it could use a civilian version for its long- haul flights. BOAC ordered a number of civilian Seafords (now called the Short S.45 Solent) and a number of the original Seafords were converted into civilian flying boats. As well as BOAC a number of other operators used the Solent, in particular Tasman Empire Airways Limited (T.E.A.L), which became Air New Zealand. One Solent converted from a Seaford and one purpose built Solent have been preserved. Short Bros. S.45 Seaford Flying Boat A brief history compiled by David H Clarke, January 2012 Abstract The Short Brothers’ Seaford flying boat was a development of their more famous Short Sunderland. Two prototypes were built, the first flying in 1944. Thirty production versions were ordered, but in the end only eight were built. Originally it was to be called the Short Sunderland Mk.IV, but in the end it was decided to give it a new name, the Short S.45 Seaford Mk. I.
