AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR MUSIC JAZZ MAJORS (MUJ)

BASS • Scales (one octave) major, minor, and diatonic modes. • Arpeggios (one octave) major 7, dominant 7, minor 7, minor 7 flat 5, diminished 7. • Play a walking bass line on a blues progression. • Improvise a solo on a blues progression. • Sight-reading (music given at audition).

DRUMSET/PERCUSSION • Play standard snare drum rudiments. • Play various “grooves” (swing, latin, funk/rock, ballad) on drum set, using sticks or brushes. • Improvise drum set solo in “fours” format. • Sight-reading (music given at audition).

GUITAR/KEYBOARD (VIBRAPHONE) • Scales (two octaves) major, minor, and diatonic modes. • Chord voicings: major 7, dominant 7, minor 7, minor 7 flat 5, diminished 7. • Prepared music: play the melody and chords of a jazz standard of your choice. • Improvise a solo and chord voicings on a blues progression. • Sight-read a melody and chord symbols (music given at audition).
