An Ethnographic Study of the Second Generation German
AN ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY OF THE SECOND GENERATION GERMAN AMERICANS LEAVING THEIR MARK ON U.S. HIGHER EDUCATION A dissertation submitted by Nicole Ruscheinski Herion to Benedictine University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education in Higher Education and Organizational Change Benedictine University April 2016 Copyright by Nicole Ruscheinski Herion, 2016 All rights reserved ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS When I began contemplating what I would write for my dissertation, I wanted to write something that would contribute to the field of higher education and make a lasting footprint on my cultural background. The words “never forget where you came from” kept ringing in my ears. I must thank Dr. Antonina Lukenchuk for helping me define and focus a concept that flourished and came to life over the past three years. I want to thank God for showing his grace and mercy during times of confusion, trouble, and misunderstanding throughout a long and laborious dissertation process. God is good and he truly allowed for this dream to become a reality. It will go down as one of the biggest accomplishments in my life. The hours that it takes to fine tune and go through a project like this are unimaginable to some; however, Dr. Sunil Chand, Dr. Kathy Sexton-Radek, and Dr. Antonina Lukenchuk were the best of mentors to me and spent countless hours helping me so I could produce a product I would be proud of. I will never forget the time and energy you devoted to getting me to this place. During the second year of this program, both my Omi and Tata passed away. -

Under the terms of the Paris Peace Treaty in 1921 it was annexed to the Serbo-Croat-Slovenian Kingdom, that later became Yugoslavia. The new name of this territory, situated to the east of present Croatia, was VOJVODINA (also spelled Voivodina or Voyvodina). Its former Hungarian name had been Bacska and Banat. During World War II, in 1941, Germany occupied Yugoslavia. At the same time, Hungary took possession of and re-annexed VOJVODINA from divided Yugoslavia. At the end of 1944, the Serbs reoccupied Bacska, which has belonged to Serbia ever since. -

Critical Discourse Analysis of Post-1989 Hungarian
CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF POST-1989 HUNGARIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY IN VOJVODINA Thesis author: Melinda Laszák Supervisor: Dr. András Kovács Submitted to Central European University Nationalism Studies Department In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary May 2010 ABSTRACT This thesis aims to present the results of a research carried out on post-1989 minority Hungarian historiography in Vojvodina, Serbia. Special focus is dedicated to the historical narratives regarding the events of World War II and the early years of the communist regime, which were characterized by severe inter-ethnic conflicts in the region. The aim of the investigation was to examine whether post-socialist transformational narratives managed to contribute to reconciliation with the past, or rather served as tools to legitimize nationalism. Applying the methodological guidelines of Critical Discourse Analysis, strategies of shifting blame and responsibility, of scapegoating, of mitigation and avoidance, and the rejection of active participation in shaping the history were found as the most important discursive strategies of Hungarian minority historiographers. By taking into account the stylistic as well as the rhetoric aspects of the narratives, it has been concluded, that although the examined historical works had great importance in breaking serious taboos of the socialist era, they still failed to provide open platform for reconciliation with the past, and became part of competing nationalist -

It reveals a complex picture of tourism, travel, and information exchange in which Germans from both countries were able to construct socialist escapes. While the Cold War history of Germans in east-central Europe has tended to either ignore their presence or focus mainly on expulsion and emigration, this article highlights the vibrant existence of a ‘German sphere’ in Cold War east-central Europe. -
Paper Title [Times Tahoma 14, Bold, Centred, Upper Case]
Journal of Urban and Landscape Planning #3/2018 URBAN CHALLENGES GERMAN CHURCH ARCHITECTURE Boștenaru Dan Maria,1 Meilă Alexandra2 1, 2’Ion Mincu’ University of Architecture and Urban Planning, Bucharest (ROMANIA) maria.bostenaru-dan [at] alumni.uni-karlsruhe.de, secretarsefuauim [at] uauim.ro Abstract. This paper presents the heritage of Germans in Romania (Danube Swabians and Transylvanian Saxons) in relationship with the regions of emigration in the home country of Germany. Nowadays there are institutions dealing with the effects of immigration on art and architecture, including research institutions and museums, and the paper makes reference to these. Also, Italian research is interested in the province of Dacia and many conservation methods come from those lessons, while many of the buildings in the home country were inspired by Italian journeys. The heritage was subjected to disasters over time (earthquake, fire, war among others) and is facing abandonment today, for which reason conservation and management of these heritage buildings is important. This conservation includes also digital conservation, such as CAD virtual reconstruction and laser scanning. The confessional history has been different, with the Saxons arriving before the church Reformation and becoming protestant, while the Swabians arrived as part of the Counter-Reform of Emperor Maria Theresia of the Habsburgs. This, and the position of the dominant architecture programme for the respective periods of history of architecture determined the position of the churches of different confessions in the city. 2017 500 years of Reformation were celebrated, which made the question of confession actual and the agreement today between Christians. Also, the basic professions of the immigrants influenced how the church architecture spread from urban to rural areas. -

Potentials of Renewable Energy Sources in the Republic of Serbia
POTENTIALS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES IN THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA WITH A DETAILED REVIEW OF THE EXPLOITATION OF GEOTHERMAL RESOURCES IN THE AUTONOMOUS PROVINCE OF VOJVODINA Zoran Stipi ć City of Subotica Urban Planning Institute, Trg Republike 16, Subotica, Serbia [email protected] Slobodan Vidovi ć Tehnoproing , Gogoljeva 13,Novi Sad, Serbia, [email protected] Mom čilo Spasojevi ć Faculty of Technical Sciences, Trg D.Obradovi ća 6, Novi Sad, Serbia, [email protected] Abstract: Energy supply is one of the basic issues in the contemporary world’s sustainable development. By adopting the Kyoto Protocol and implementing its mechanisms, it is expected that the use of conventional energy sources shall stabilise and decrease on global level. The European Union’s legal framework, through its appropriate directives, sets very clear objectives for the use of renewable energy sources for member states. Serbia is a country with significant potentials in renewable energy sources, which are, regretfully, underused. Renewable energy source potentials are featured by very favourable indicators in matters of both capacity and distribution. The status is especially favourable in the field of geothermal energy potentials in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, situated in the Pannonian Basin, where there are significant sources of this fuel. The paper presents the basic forms and characteristics of renewable energy sources in Serbia and provides an overview of the possibilities for their use. Key words: Renewable energy sources, potentials, capacities, resources, geothermal energy, Serbia, Vojvodina. 1. INTRODUCTION Solving global energy problems implies an interdisciplinary approach and considering the issues from different perspectives. Decreasing overall energy consumption, increasing energy efficiency, modernising the installation, using alternative energy sources and adopting and implementing a number of legal regulations and international covenants are the points of departure in solving this exceptionally complex issue. -

Churches in Serbia and Germany in Dialogue
TOWARD THE HEALING OF MEMORIES AND CHANGING OF PERCEPTIONS: CHURCHES IN SERBIA AND GERMANY IN DIALOGUE A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Angela V. Ilić MAY 2012 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Leonard J. Swidler, Advisory Chair, Department of Religion Dr. Terry Rey, Department of Religion Dr. John C. Raines, Department of Religion Dr. Paul B. Mojzes, Rosemont College Dr. Kyriakos M. Kontopoulos, External Reader, Department of Sociology © by Angela Valeria Ilić 2012 All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines a series of interchurch consultations that took place between 1999 and 2009 with the participation of the Evangelical Church in Germany, the Roman Catholic German Bishops’ Conference and the Serbian Orthodox Church. The Protestant-Catholic-Orthodox ecumenical encounters began in the immediate aftermath of the Kosovo crisis, and aimed to support Serbia’s democratization and European integration. At a total of nine meetings, delegates from the participating churches, together with politicians, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and scholars from various fields, discussed the role of churches and religion in the two countries. The meetings provided a forum for exchanging knowledge and addressing the challenges confronting the churches and their social organizations. Through lectures, discussions, and meetings in working groups, the consultations focused on theological, legal, political, and social topics, such as church and state relations in Serbia, the role of churches in secularized society, Serbia’s relationship to the rest of Europe, reconciliation, and the healing of memories. Focusing on the content and the outcomes of the consultations, the author places them into the broader ecumenical, social and political context in which they took place. -
