Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This thesis is a contribution towards an historically informed understanding of contemporary music making amongst Roma in Ostrava, Czech Republic. It also challenges, from a theoretical perspective, conceptions of relationships between music and discourses of ‘race’. My research is based on fieldwork conducted in Ostrava, between August 2003 and July 2004 and East Slovakia in July 2004, as well as archival research in Ostrava and Vienna. These fieldwork experiences compelled me to explore music and ideas of ‘race’ through discourses of diaspora in order to assist in conceptualising and interpreting Romani music making in Ostrava. The vast majority of Roma in Ostrava are post-World War II emigres or descendants of emigres from East Slovakia. In contemporary Ostrava, most Roma live on the socio economic margins and are most often regarded as a separate ‘race’ with a separate culture from the dominant population.

  • Accordion Exposition
ACCORDION EXPOSITION Investigating the playing and learning of advanced level concert accordion repertoire ELIZABETH AILEEN JONES DOCTOR OF CREATIVE ARTS UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN SYDNEY February 2008 Abstract: The accordion is a relatively young concert instrument that is moving into an exciting era of development. Technical advancements in production have led to the development of a new playing technique, a wider repertoire choice and the creation of many new works. Most published articles and research books focus on the history of the accordion but are lacking in detail on the repertoire that has been composed for the instrument. The absence of this information has resulted in a current generation of music students, both performers and composers, being unaware of the potential of the accordion. This project investigates the concert-level accordion performer in Australia, rather than the beginner or intermediate-level performer, through a study of three young concert-level accordion students and through my own performances of concert-level repertoire. The exegesis discusses the relationship, in terms of accordion development, between the performer, educator and manufacturer; and the relationship between the manufacturer, performer and composer that emerges throughout the history of the modern instrument. I also draw my performance process into this discussion. In doing so I hope to inspire and educate fellow musicians/composers about this instrument. The exegesis begins with a history of the accordion and other instruments in this family. Manufacturing developments will be examined as they relate to the development of playing technique and compositional styles, and the role of performers who have helped shape the accordion into the concert instrument that it is today, and have influenced its repertoire, will be discussed.

I have had excellent supervision throughout the research and writing process. Many thanks are due to Steven Connor for his enthusiasm for the project and his polymathic advice, and to Ioana Szeman for her valuable expertise and ability to tease out threads of argument from tangled text. I am fortunate that the primary subjects of my research – the members of Gogol Bordello – allow themselves to be so accessible, and thank them for being happy to talk about their work, for sharing their riders, and for throwing magnificent afterparties.
