World League of Fantasy Football Bob Ackles Cup Bob Ackles was born in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, on Sept. 16, 1938. His family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1952 and as a kid he played hockey, football and rugby. After seeing a newspaper article saying a professional football team was forming in Vancouver he immediately applied for a job. And so, Bob Ackles began his tenure with the BC Lions in 1953 as the water boy in the team’s first season in the Canadian Football League. Over the next 22 years he worked his way up through the ranks and was named the Lions’ General Manager in 1975. Eleven years he guided the team before being lured to the NFL where for the next six seasons he was the Vice President of Player Personnel for the Dallas Cowboys. Ackles left Dallas for the Phoenix Cardinals in 1992, but the Cowboys team he helped assemble went on to win Super Bowls in 1993, 1994 and 1996. He served in similar senior positions with Phoenix, Philadelphia, and Miami and also the Las Vegas Outlaws of the short-lived XFL. Ackles was the only person ever to hold senior executive positions in all three football leagues. In 2002 Ackles returned to the BC Lions as CEO and President and was also named to the CFL Hall of Fame. In 1986 he won the Schenley Award for his contribution to Canadian football, the only non-player to be recognized in the 33- year history of the award. In September 2007 Ackles’ published his memoir, The Water Boy (From the Sidelines to the Owner's Box: Inside the CFL, the XFL, and the NFL), a candid account of his life and his more than 50 years in professional football. It received rave reviews across North America and is a must read for any football fan. Because of Ackles’ impact on football in North America and to also reflect our league’s diversity of managers from both sides of the border the WLFF Cup was renamed in 2008 to honour this great man. Bob Ackles passed away July 6, 2008. He was 69. .

Former Ohio State Running Back Pepe Pearson Opens Up About Playing, Coaching Career Since the NFL draft’s inception in 1936, the Ohio State football program has been a mainstay. The Buckeyes have had a whopping 477 players selected – including a nation-leading 84 first-round picks – across 85 drafts. A quick glimpse at the long list of players would reveal the 1997 Buckeyes as an anomaly, however. After falling to Florida State in the Sugar Bowl, all of Ohio State’s draft-eligible juniors opted to put their NFL dreams on hold for another shot at a national title. Running back Pepe Pearson didn’t have a choice, however, as he was one of the few starters who had exhausted his eligibility that season. Despite receiving a late-round grade from NFL personnel, Pearson went unselected in the 1998 draft. He signed a free-agent deal with the San Francisco 49ers and bounced around the league for three seasons, also spending time on the offseason roster or practice squads of the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Pearson, who weighed in at 5-10 and 209 pounds during his playing career, also had briefs stints with the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe, the Las Vegas Outlaws of the original XFL and the Dayton Warbirds of the National Indoor Football League. If you ask for the highlight of his career, Pearson will quickly point to the Fire’s 13-10 win over the Scottish Claymores in World Bowl 2000, the eighth installment of NFL Europe’s championship game.

LOOK: Broncos’ Emmanuel Sanders sheds walking boot after Achilles surgery By Kyle Fredrickson Denver Post Feb. 6, 2019 If Emmanuel Sanders’ dance moves are any indication, he’s reached an important milestone in his injury rehabilitation this offseason. Sanders, a ninth-year Broncos’ wide receiver who tore his Achilles during practice in December, posted a video Monday to Instagram of himself hopping out of a black Mercedes-Benz SUV — without a walking boot — before a quick celebratory jig. His caption read: “Slight limp but I’m finally out of the boot.” Two months have passed between Sanders’ injury and the post, but a long journey remains for him to be able to play. Former NFL team doctor David Chao told The Denver Post in December: “Recovery is not like a light switch, more of a slow sunrise. Some have returned as early as six months but may not have been 100 percent. Nine months is a good target but to really be explosive (it) could be longer and closer to a year. This is why I expect (Sanders) likely will not be ready or 100 percent for start of (the 2019) season.” However, Sanders expressed little doubt in December he’ll return to being the same playmaker he showcased in 12 games last season with a team-leading 71 receptions for 868 yards. He also accounted for six total touchdowns (four receiving, one rushing and one passing). “I’ll definitely for sure be ready for Week 1,” Sanders said in December. “This is a six-month injury.
