Medals The 29th annual alumni football game was played on Two of our alumni were among the 17,000 to compete Saturday, May 11th during the Mayfair. It was a treat for in a variety of sports this summer at the World Masters Games held in Turino, Italy. John Mills (VC’68) played the players to have an audience of 200-250 boisterous fans! in the 60+ category in basketball and his team came away with the Gold Medal in the round robin event. The young guns came out of the gate hard and fast. They held nothing back and used They competed against teams from Russia, Latvia, Brazil every trick in the book!! Not to be outdone, Hugh MacKinnon their youth and enthusiasm, Rashaun Simonise ’13 and Angus Kerr ’13 ran rough over the (VC’70) played in the 55+ group and his team also came veterans, scoring a pair of touchdowns each. Gary Bajwa, Anthony Balce, Cam Bondoc, away with Gold, defeating Estonia in the final game. Kraig Cabalde-Yeh, Marco Perez-Guzman, Adrian lee, Liam Mahara, Andrew Pauls, Eli Congratulations gentlemen. Pauls and Keegan Yang (all class of ’13) were strutting their stuff and predicting that a good old fashion thrashing was in store for the veterans. While the veterans were back on their heels and seemed confused, they did manage to score with Burton Heig ’07 finally crossing the goal line. The score at the half was 26-6 for the young guys.

During half time, the vets huddled up, passed around the A535 and with Coach Taggert’s assistance, they regrouped. They had too much pride to allow the young guys to continue their domination. The veteran of the group, Ed Rogers ’78 began to work the referees (rumour has it some cash changed hands). Joseph Mackinnon ’79 started trash talking and got into the heads of the young guys, planting the seed of doubt. As the 2nd half progressed, the ever youthful Rob Kozikowski settled down at QB and started spreading the ball around with pin point passes. Chris Marincat ’03, Jeff Gentile ’92 and Daniel Laventure ‘12 each had a pair of TD’s and they closed the point spread and set up a classic finish. With the young guys holding onto a 2 point lead, the veterans unleashed a ferocious defense; Joe Sweeney ’79, Peter Santin ’81, Baron Yeh ’04, Matt Esaw ’05, Edgardo Pinillas ’05, Spencer Latu ’12, Chris Chebaya ’12 and John Simonise repeatedly found a way to stop the young guys cold in their tracks. With less than a minute on the clock David Jones ’93 made a highlight reel catch on the 2 yard line. It was only fitting that on the next play Liam Coughlan ’81, who was playing in his 27th alumni game, scored the winning TD!! Final score… Veterans 38 – young guys 34.

Other highlights: Jim Canil’s 29th year as event organizer, head referee Wayne Steele’s 28th alumni game, and his trusty assistant referee Ken McKinnon’s 25th.

Special thanks to Coach Bernett for his continued support of this event, Rick Gazzola for ensuring we have uniforms and water. Jordan Della Rosa ’13 for being the announcer, Aaron Bettiol ’13 as spotter, Tim Hoyem on the clock, Marina Bettiol and Derek Page ’81 for handling registration and Mr. Fong for taking the photo’s.

Irish Rowing More Golden Moments

The Fighting Irish continued their impressive results at the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Championships held each year in St. Catharines, . 2013 saw the Irish come away with two Gold medals, two Silver and a Bronze in the competition which includes approximately 2,500 athletes from all over Canada and the United States. Sadly, as a result of high winds the organizers of the regatta deemed the water conditions on the Sunday unsafe and rowing on the final day was cancelled. As a result of this, medals were awarded on heat times and no overall team champions were named.

This year, the Vancouver College Hall of Honour inducted the 1997 Junior Heavyweight 8+ as the first national champions in the school’s history. Since then, the Irish have won 21 additional Gold Medals to go along with 17 Silver and 12 Bronze for a school total of 51 since we first started competing at the national level in 1993.

This year’s Gold Medalists included: Senior Men’s 72kg 8+ (Justin Dohm (cox), Braden Hale, Tully Cogswell, Sawyer Precious, Marcus Vandersande, Chris Rener, Aaron Lattimer, Finn Cogswell and Sam Williams) Coached by Paige Jackson and Dereck Schwandt Ed Gladstone Junior Men’s 66kg 4+ (Michael Wightman (cox), Carson Hale, Matthew Ward, Michael Doyle and (VC’28) Geoffrey Charm) Coached by Mike Lattimer Further to our “Ageless Athletes” story in the On the Alumni rowing front, Evan Cheng (VC’09) and Max Lattimer (VC’10) represented Canada in April 2013 edition of the Irish Review we are very the Men’s Lightweight Pair at the U23 World Championships in Linz, Austria. Vancouver College had 5 grads (out of 14 spots) who were selected to represent Team BC at the Canada Summer Games. The rowing portion of the games has 7 events for men and 7 for women. Team BC came home with four gold medals. We had an alumnus in each of the four winning boats. They all came home with two golds each and were considered the nucleus of the strongest team BC has put together in over 30 years. The following grads rowed for Team BC: “My first car was a convertible, and I’ve had the top down ever since.”

Vancouver College Hall oƒ Honour Inductees

In 1986, Vancouver College instituted the Emerald Award to honour distinguished graduates of the school. This process continued on until 1993 when for reasons unknown it ceased. In 2000, a Sports Hall of Fame was created to recognize graduates and others who had either excelled at athletic endeavours or had made a significant contribution to Irish Athletics. In 2007, the process was revised to include graduates and others from all fields of endeavour and the current Hall of Honour was created. Since 1986, 51 alumni or friends of the school have be recognized along with five athletic teams as members of the Vancouver College Hall of Honour. Six individuals and two teams were so honoured in 2013.
