Every year, we celebrate the successes of our football program, and how much it adds to our community. Some years, like last year, the impact is obvious: a dominating performance on the field leading up to a record-breaking Provincial Championship that brought our community, students,
As with almost everything in the world in 2020, football at Vancouver College has been greatly impacted by Covid-19. Despite an uncertainty of games, our boys worked tirelessly to prepare for the season from April through August. These young men followed a workout plan sent to them by Coach Vass, and put themselves in great physical shape

parents, alumni together in such a powerful way. But, as I’ve said for years and as I know our football coaches believe, the true success of each season is not judged by number of wins or records or MVP performances, but rather, it is reflected in the growth in character of the boys who make up the team, both individually and as a group of Better Men. for the possibility of games. Once we were back in school in September, practices resumed, albeit with many limitations. Despite this, enthusiasm remained high and attitudes were positive as we headed deeper into September and eventually October. As of publication time for this program, inter school play had not been approved by the ministry of education, but Irish spirit never wavered.

So I would argue that this season’s group of committed young men, and their coaches, have been at least as successful as last year’s championship crew. I imagine the strength of character involved in coming out, day after day, sometimes in terrible weather, and often when there are no actual classes to even attend, and to push yourself to get stronger, better, faster, without even the opportunity of a chance for glory in an actual game. This is exactly what the football coaches created this year: more boys than ever were able to participate in our training sessions, a culture of commitment and fun was created when it was needed most in our community, and genuine team identities were formed. This is the hallmark of true excellence in an athletic program.
The publication of this program continues to be a labor of love for it’s primary contributors; Bruce Jagger and Andrea Prout-Bernett. Bruce has yet again taken on the role of motivator, author, organizer, and editor of this publication. Andrea has dedicated her time by selling program adds, which has not been as easy during this current economic reality. Their commitment makes this years program possible, and with the possibility of no games, it becomes a positive takeaway from what has been a very unusual start to the fall sports season.

Our 2020 team features a talented and committed group of seniors, many of whom were major contributors to last seasons 2019 provincial championship. You can read about each of them in our senior profile section. That group is joined by an enthusiastic group of juniors, who have had much success during the Gr. 8.9 and 10 seasons. Our rosters is loaded with ability and responsiveness to coaching. Speaking of coaching, we have an outstanding staff. Our varsity coaches are spotlighted on their profile page, and all of our coaches are listed on page 3. We have many dedicated alumni who give back to the program by coaching on either the Grade 8, Junior Varsity or Varsity team. In addition, our many valued support staff are highlighted on page 3 as well.

Rashaun attended the University of Calgary and was signed as a free agent by the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals. He was subsequently selected in the second round of the CFL draft by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and signed this season with the BC Lions. He is the son of John Simonise and Belinda Hendrie.

Andrea Prout-Bernett – GM Athletics

Anthony Findlay – Assistant Coach

Adam Konar (VC’11) – BC Lions – Linebacker

Adam was drafted in the third round of the 2015 CFL Draft by the Edmonton Eskimos. He previously stared at both the University of British Columbia and the University of Calgary. He was recently acquired by the BC Lions. He was a member of the 2010 Fighting Irish team and was named Most Valuable Player in the provincial championship game, leading VC to victory. He is the son of Kevin (VC’76) and Joanne Konar.

Conditioning Coach for the Fighting Irish football program at Vancouver College. He is a certified strength in pretty well all levels of football in the province of
B.C. He was the Head Coach at John Oliver High School for over thirty years and guided the Jokers to several playoff victories and a Provincial Championship in 1992. He has been the Defensive Coordinator for Team B.C. on four different occasions winning Gold in 1994 and medaling in every other year. Lately Coach Turner has been coaching at the university level, at U.B.C for three years and at Simon Fraser for nine years during which time he coached several Defensive Linemen who moved on to the C.F.L. Ron and his wife, Dianne, have two grown daughters.

A graduate of Sir Winston Churchill High School and the University of British Columbia, Rick has been a fixture in the Irish locker room since 1993.
16 years experience training high school, national-level, and professional athletes and also currently serves as the strength and conditioning coordinator for the Canadian National Wrestling Team.

He has served as trainer, equipment manager, chief handyman and great friend to a generation of Irish football players. He is a former trainer of the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer team and has also worked for the Canadian National Soccer team.

Daved Benefield – Assistant Coach

Coach Benefield is starting his sixth season with the Fighting Irish coaching staff. He is a native of Pasadena, California, where he attended Cal State North-

Shawn Antolis 5’4” 125 lbs DB – Shawn is a five year man in the
Irish Football program and plans to go on to university next year to study Kinesiology. In addition to football he is also on the Irish Track team and was Junior Captain in 2019. He is an Honour Roll student and is the son of Dewi Ratna and Hardy Antolis. His brother, Alex, is a grad of 2019.

  • Parsa Heydarzadeh – 6’3” 185 lbs DB/WR – Parsa is a five year

man who plans to head east next year to study business play football at university. He is a member of the President’s Honour Society and is also a member of the Varsity Basketball team. He is the son of Ahmad Heydarzadeh and Shigemi Mori.

Rafael Schincariol – 6’0” 190lbs RB/DB – Raf is starting his fifth

Criminology with the ultimate goal of becoming a police officer. He is also a member of the Irish Track team. He is on the Honour Roll and a recent member of the President’s Honour Society. In his spare time he enjoys hockey and basketball and is a volunteer at the Door is Open. A long suffering fan of the Arizona Cardinals, his is the son of Dave (VC’92) and Lorna Clutterham.

    World League of Fantasy Football Bob Ackles

    World League of Fantasy Football Bob Ackles Cup Bob Ackles was born in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, on Sept. 16, 1938. His family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1952 and as a kid he played hockey, football and rugby. After seeing a newspaper article saying a professional football team was forming in Vancouver he immediately applied for a job. And so, Bob Ackles began his tenure with the BC Lions in 1953 as the water boy in the team’s first season in the Canadian Football League. Over the next 22 years he worked his way up through the ranks and was named the Lions’ General Manager in 1975. Eleven years he guided the team before being lured to the NFL where for the next six seasons he was the Vice President of Player Personnel for the Dallas Cowboys. Ackles left Dallas for the Phoenix Cardinals in 1992, but the Cowboys team he helped assemble went on to win Super Bowls in 1993, 1994 and 1996. He served in similar senior positions with Phoenix, Philadelphia, and Miami and also the Las Vegas Outlaws of the short-lived XFL. Ackles was the only person ever to hold senior executive positions in all three football leagues. In 2002 Ackles returned to the BC Lions as CEO and President and was also named to the CFL Hall of Fame. In 1986 he won the Schenley Award for his contribution to Canadian football, the only non-player to be recognized in the 33- year history of the award. In September 2007 Ackles’ published his memoir, The Water Boy (From the Sidelines to the Owner's Box: Inside the CFL, the XFL, and the NFL), a candid account of his life and his more than 50 years in professional football.
