2015 GAME SUMMARIES Game 5 Cleveland Gladiators 62, Tampa Bay Storm 54

Collin Taylor’s interception returned for a touchdown gave the Cleveland Gladiators (3-2) their first lead in the third quarter, and Donnie Fletcher’s touchdown off an interception gave the Gladiators the insurance they needed to knock off the Tampa Bay Storm (2-3) 62-54 before a crowd of 11,120 at Quicken Loans Arena. Taylor led the Gladiators with 111 receiving yards and three touchdowns in the game, and added the defensive touchdown for his second straight game with four touchdowns. Shane Austin passed for 285 yards and six touchdowns.

After the two teams traded fumbles on the first two offensive series of the game, they traded touchdowns on their next two drives. Kendrick Ings scored the first of his two touchdowns on an 11-yard strike from Jason Boltus with 5:50 left in the opening quarter, and just under three minutes later, the Gladiators tied the game when Jeramie Richardson scampered in for a 23-yard touchdown run. After one quarter, the game was tied 7-7.

Each team scored 35 points in the second and third quarters combined, and for Tampa Bay, T.T. Toliver was the key factor. Toliver notched three of his four receiving touchdowns in the second quarter, and each one was from at least 21 yards. With the Gladiators down 28-14 late in the first half, Austin found Taylor from five yards out for a touchdown, and with a successful extra point try from Adrian Trevino, the Gladiators cut the deficit to seven points heading into halftime.

The Gladiators had the ball to start the second half, and tied the game by executing a five-play, 47-yard drive that took 2:37 off the clock. The drive was capped off by a 24-yard catch-and-run touchdown pass from Austin to Taylor; Taylor took a short pass and streaked up the right sideline en route to the end zone, and the Gladiators tied the game at 28-28 with the successful extra points.

After Taylor picked up his third receiving touchdown of the game to boost the Gladiators to a 48-42 lead with 11:35 left in the fourth quarter, Tampa Bay tied the game on a one-yard run from Boltus with 4:22 left in regulation. A wild snap on the extra point attempt led to the Gladiators foiling the extra point try, leaving the game tied at 48-48 entering the final minutes.

Cleveland took a 55-48 lead with 52 seconds left after Austin marched the Gladiators offense down the field on a three-minute drive, finishing the series off with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Dominick Goodman; the second touchdown catch of the night for Goodman, who finished with 63 receiving yards in the game. On the ensuing Tampa Bay drive, Boltus was picked off by Fletcher on a pass over the middle, and Fletcher returned the interception 22 yards to the end zone, putting the Gladiators on top for good. Tampa Bay added a late touchdown from Toliver, but were unable to erase the deficit.

2015 GAME SUMMARIES Game 6 Cleveland Gladiators 56, 55 (OT)

After erasing an eight-point deficit before regulation time expired, the Cleveland Gladiators (4-2) emerged with a 56-55 overtime road win over the Orlando Predators (3-3) Saturday night at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. Shane Austin completed 36 of 44 passes for 364 yards and eight touchdown passes for the Gladiators. In the receiving game, Dominick Goodman and Collin Taylor each hauled in three touchdown grabs while Amarri Jackson had two receiving touchdowns and also had a two-point conversion catch with two seconds remaining to ultimately force overtime. The Gladiators host Jacksonville Saturday, May 9th at Quicken Loans Arena in their next game.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first half, exchanging leads on almost every possession. The Gladiators led 13-7 after one quarter, but Orlando took its first lead, 14-13, 1:59 into the second quarter on a four-yard touchdown pass from Randy Hippeard to Larry Brackins. A 35-yard touchdown pass from Austin to Taylor later helped the Gladiators to a 27-21 advantage with 4:07 left in the second quarter, but Orlando managed to gain a lead that lasted into halftime. , Orlando’s backup quarterback, entered the game and threw a one-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 41 seconds left in the first half to give the Predators a 28-27 halftime advantage.

Each team scored 14 points in the third quarter, setting up a 42-41 game entering what would be a low-scoring final frame of regulation. After Hippeard connected with Brackins on a six-yard touchdown pass 1:58 into the fourth quarter, the Gladiators defense held the Predators off the board for the duration of regulation time. Orlando had an opportunity to stretch their lead to two scores, but the Gladiators defense stood tall and held the Predators to a missed 28-yard field goal with 90 seconds remaining.

Austin connected with Taylor on an 11-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining in regulation to pull the Gladiators to within 49-47, and on the ensuing two-point conversion try, Austin found Jackson in the end zone to his right to tie the game at 49- 49.

Orlando won the coin toss before overtime and elected to kick the ball away to start the extra frame. Austin and the Gladiators offense executed an eight-play, 44 yard drive that ended with a six-yard touchdown pass to Goodman; his third of the game. After Goodman’s third touchdown and a converted extra point from Adrian Trevino, the Gladiators led 56-49. The Predators scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Kendal Thompkins to pull to within a point, but on the two point conversion try, the Gladiators defense took away all the options and Hippeard threw an incomplete pass, securing a one-point overtime win for Cleveland.

2015 GAME SUMMARIES Game 7 46, Cleveland Gladiators 43

Jacksonville’s four consecutive touchdowns, which spanned from the late stages of the first half through the third quarter, proved to be too much for the Cleveland Gladiators (4-3) to overcome in a 46-43 loss to the Sharks (2-5) on Saturday night. A Quicken Loans Arena crowd of 9,872 was on hand as the Gladiators Amarri Jackson led all receivers in the game with 135 yards and three touchdowns. Dominick Goodman hauled in a pair of touchdowns- one from four yards with 4:04 remaining, and one from three yards with 1:17 left to play- but Philadelphia took over possession and managed to occupy the duration of the game.

ADAM THE BULL – FILL-IN PLAY-BY-PLAY VOICE

Adam the Bull has been talking sports on the radio since he was a senior at Sheepshead Bay High School in Brooklyn, NY. His radio career began when he did play by play for a football game that aired on a local college radio station.

In the spring of 1999 The Bull earned his first paid gig as the play-by-play voice of the Batavia Muckdogs of the New York Penn League. During his three summers in Batavia Adam was able to watch as Marlon Byrd, Ryan Madson, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard cut their teeth with the Muckdogs. He graduated from SUNY Brockport in 2000, where he majored in Communications on the broadcasting track.

From 2002-2007 The Bull hosted sports talk shows for several stations in Utica, NY. During his time in central New York, Adam also called football, basketball and hockey games for Utica College and the now defunct UHL team the Mohawk Valley Prowlers. He also did the play-by-play for three Major League Baseball Hall of Fame Games.

In 2007 The Bull returned to NYC to work for Sports Radio 66-WFAN. When he started at WFAN Adam split his time as a host and update anchor for the station. Over the next three years, The Bull was one of the most versatile sports announcers for WFAN in all dayparts.

Adam “The Bull” now begins a new chapter as the afternoon drive host on the new Sports Radio 92.3 The Fan. Within a week of being in town Adam knew that Cleveland had the kind of fans that could match his passion for sports. He is excited to be able to talk sports five days a week with the people of Northeast Ohio.

A native New Yorker, Adam was born and raised in Brooklyn. He is a die-hard fan of the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Bengals. The Bull tied the knot in October 2010. In addition to sports, Adam enjoys reading the novels of Lee Child, Michael Connelly and many other mystery and thriller authors, going to the movies, hanging out with his bride, and a great slice of pizza.

STEVE THONN Head Coach

The Gladiators finished the 2014 season with a 17-1 record under Thonn. Last season’s 17 wins set a new AFL record for wins in a regular season. Thonn’s Gladiators won the East Division and American Conference en route to a berth in ArenaBowl XXVII, where they fell to Arizona. Thonn was named AFL Coach of the Year following the season.

In his first year with the Gladiators, the team compiled a 7-9 overall record. Despite the sub-.500 finish, the Gladiators outscored their opponents 938-906 on the year and had receiver Ben Nelson and offensive lineman Adam Tadisch named to the AFL First Team and defensive lineman Anthony Hoke was named to the AFL Second Team. Quarterback John Dutton finished the season with 5,104 passing yards – second-best in the league.

In Thonn’s lone season, Grand Rapids posted the four highest single-game point totals this season (92 in Week 4; 84 in Week 5; 84 in Week 15; 86 in Week 17) and became the first team in AFL history to post four 80+ point games in a single season. Grand Rapids’ 92-point outburst at Kansas City in Week 4 marked the highest total for a road team in AFL history and the second highest point total overall.

Prior to the Rampage, Thonn spent three seasons (2005-07) as the offensive coordinator for the , who compiled a 33-15 regular-season record during that span, made two National Conference Championship appearances and reached ArenaBowl XIX.

Meanwhile, quarterback Chris Greisen, who had thrown just 16 passes in his AFL career entering 2007, connected on a league-record 117 touchdown passes, led the AFL and currently ranks third all-time with a 132.0 quarterback rating, and amassed the second highest passing yards total (4,851) in AFL history.

Prior to joining the Force, Thonn served as the offensive coordinator for the from 2003-04, where he helped introduced three-time AFL All-Ironman Team member and 2007 Ironman of the Year Will Pettis to the league.

The Wheaton College graduate was named to the Division III All-America Team in football and played basketball and baseball for the Crusaders from 1980-84, earning a spot in the school’s Hall of Honor. Thonn also served as an assistant basketball coach for his alma mater and has coached for Wheaton North (Ill.) High School’s varsity football team.
