Citizenship, Authorship, and Disability in Cervantes and Scarron by Adleen Carlisle Crapo A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Comparative Literature University of Toronto © Copyright by Adleen Carlisle Crapo, 2020 Citizenship, Authorship, and Disability in Cervantes and Scarron Adleen Crapo Doctor of Philosophy Comparative Literature University of Toronto 2020 Abstract Noting the all-too-recent interest of disability scholars in early modern literature, this dissertation seeks to establish a way forward for the study of disability in a period-appropriate way. Through its juxtaposition of disabled authors’ Paul Scarron and Miguel de Cervantes’ paratexts and their treatment of disability in literary texts, it seeks to elucidate a possible relationship between disability and representation. It uses popular lexicographies to trace the diverse and changing vocabulary the two authors employed for different impairments. At the same time, it considers different genres, such as epic and drama, and modes like the burlesque, which were particularly accessible to disabled men of the period. This dissertation provides an account of the differing disabilities of both authors, and how their respective disabilities called into question their national identities. The stakes were high for both. Cervantes had to demonstrate that though the hand was a symbol of Hispanitas, or Spanishness, in losing his he had only become more Spanish. For Scarron, his inflammatory disease, which had left him with a dramatic spinal curvature, meant that he needed to employ the burlesque to demonstrate both his wit (a courtly and French quality) and his natural humour. The authors' disabilities are considered in relation to the organ or functioning which was impacted, as well as its associated symbolism and history. -

It does not exceed the prescribed word limit for the relevant Degree Committee. 4 5 Abstract This study addresses chivalric writing and court culture during the reign of Juan II of Castile and aims to examine the changing chivalric ideal in Castile during this turbulent period of Castilian history. My thesis argues that political crisis in Castile led to a corresponding crisis in Castilian chivalry as commentators at the royal court tried to correct the failings of the Castilian nobility. The study is based around the work of Alonso de Cartagena, an esteemed diplomat, translator and the Bishop of Burgos in the latter years of Juan II’s reign. -

The Archbishop died on July 5, 1608, and four years later his book appeared under the editorship of his nephew and namesake. Over a century passed before any consecutive account of Cervantes's life was published. Little anecdotes, mostly apocryphal, were invented about him, and were circulated in France and England respectively by such writers as Rapin and Motteux. But it was not till 1737-8 that any serious attempt was made to reconstruct Cervantes's biography. This preliminary essay by Gregorio Mayans y Siscar, the most promi- nent Spanish scholar of his time, will be found in the prolegomena to the London reprint of Don Quixote issued by Jacob Tonson : naturally it contains much conjectural matter and some erroneous statements. Lords Of The Seven Parishes: Neighbourhood, Guild, And Revolt In Early Modern Seville, 1520-1652 Abstract My dissertation links two popular revolts in Seville, in 1520-1 and 1652, both of which had as their focus the artisan parish of Omnium Sanctorum, in the Feria district of the city. The first was a local echo of the great Comunero Revolt, while the second was arguably the most serious political uprising in the Crown of Castile after 1520. The symmetry between these events, alongside the fact that La Feria—as it was popularly known—was the most likely source of urban unrest throughout this period, demands a study of the specific local conditions that enabled, structured or defused popular protest in early modern Spain’s greatest metropolis. The two central chapters of this dissertation examine, firstly, the meaning and nature of neighbourhood community—including its importance in the articulation of collective action—and, secondly, the silk guild’s (Arte de la Seda) petitioning and ideological framework in the seventeenth century (as most of the rebels in 1652 were silk workers). -

The Libro de la Regla Vieja of the Cathedral of Seville as a Musicological Source1 Juan Ruiz Jiménez Seville Cathedral’s Libro de la Regla Vieja has, incomprehensibly, been overlooked by the scholars from various disciplines who have consulted the collections of the Institución Colombina. Although the volume was catalogued as Book 1 of Section 3 (Liturgy) of the Fondo Capitular in the Archivo de la Catedral of Seville (E-SC sección III, 1),2 the listing itself has been the cause of some confusion. A brief description in the published catalogue’s introduction indicates—without further explanation—that copying of the book was begun in 1524, and that it continued to be added to until 1680. Meanwhile, the date given in the main entry, “1424”, is a typographical error.3 The volume—a mid-sixteenth century revised copy of an older but now lost regla de coro, collecting regulations concerning the performance of Mass, Office and other ceremonies in choir throughout the annual cycle—is a key document for the study of the pre-Tridentine music and liturgy of Seville Cathedral, and of all those churches within the territorial limits of its archbishopric: the bishoprics of Málaga and Cádiz in the Iberian Peninsula itself; the see based on the island of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and those sees founded in the Americas before 1548. These New World churches were originally suffragans of Seville, and even after they were restructured in the 1540s into the independent archdioceses of Santo Domingo, Méjico, and Lima (to which was later added Santa Fe de Bogotá), they would have continued to follow Sevillian liturgical usage, until, ultimately, they adopted the Tridentine Roman rite.4 The significance of this regla de coro to Seville’s pre-Tridentine use prompted me to seek here a deeper understanding of the book, and especially the textual transmission of its contents, confusion over which has led, hitherto, to most of the difficulties and errors concerning its dating. -
