Lords Of The Seven Parishes: Neighbourhood, Guild, And Revolt In Early Modern Seville, 1520-1652 Abstract My dissertation links two popular revolts in Seville, in 1520-1 and 1652, both of which had as their focus the artisan parish of Omnium Sanctorum, in the Feria district of the city. The first was a local echo of the great Comunero Revolt, while the second was arguably the most serious political uprising in the Crown of Castile after 1520. The symmetry between these events, alongside the fact that La Feria—as it was popularly known—was the most likely source of urban unrest throughout this period, demands a study of the specific local conditions that enabled, structured or defused popular protest in early modern Spain’s greatest metropolis. The two central chapters of this dissertation examine, firstly, the meaning and nature of neighbourhood community—including its importance in the articulation of collective action—and, secondly, the silk guild’s (Arte de la Seda) petitioning and ideological framework in the seventeenth century (as most of the rebels in 1652 were silk workers). I also discuss the production of memory—the ways in which sixteenth- and seventeenth-century urban historians dealt with the subject of popular uprisings—as well as the role of the asistentes (royal governors) of Seville, above with regard to food provisioning, its relation to concepts of justice and politics. This dissertation thus brings together several lines of inquiry, each with its own particular trajectory and set of concerns, yet bearing direct relation to the questions posed here—the literature on revolt and rebellion in early modern Europe, on Spanish and Mediterranean cities, on the nature and uses of written memory, on urban neighbourhoods and popular politics, on guilds and artisans (above all silk workers), and finally the seventeenth-century ‘crisis.’ At the confluence of these kindred streams is a more complete understanding of the nature and mechanisms of urban revolt, the popular role in the governance of the city and the kingdom, but also of self-perceptions and alternative visions of the civic Republic nurtured by those who were not meant to have an opinion on such matters. Joaquín de la Peña, the hermano mayor of the brotherhood of Nuestra Señora Reina de Todos los Santos of Omnium Sanctorum—heir to both the early modern cofradías of Holy Sacrament and the Souls in Purgatory of the came parish—was kind enough to allow me access to the archive of the confraternity, a stone’s throw from the parish church of Omnium Sanctorum, and to sit with me in person as I spent hours and days poring over the records. Even a modest exploratory venture like this one requires financial backers, and, though they were neither princes nor monarchs, princely sums have nevertheless been iv invested in this enterprise over the past several years by sundry august bodies and institutions. The foundation was laid by the University of Pennsylvania History department’s generous Benjamin Franklin Graduate Fellowship, and later Dissertation Fellowship. These grants and awards all helped to unlock the doors of the Spanish archives, but I was able to make more of the material found there thanks to the Mellon Summer Institute in Spanish Paleography, hosted by the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin, and taught by the brilliant and ebullient Consuelo Varela. As a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania I was fortunate to have been surrounded by a sterling group of shipmates far more skilful than me, above all Tim Slonosky, Kathryn Ostrofsky, Matthew Gaetano, Dan Cheely, Anton Matytsin and Matthew Mitchell, and older, wiser colleagues such as Andrew Berns. The Spanish American Silver Peso: Export Commodity and Global Money of the Ancien Regime (16th-18th centuries) Carlos Marichal The legacy of the monetary regime of the Spanish empire is not only an important chapter in world economic history but also key to an understanding of premodern monetary systems. The international diffusion of the Spanish American silver peso between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries transformed it into what could be termed as an almost universal, metallic money. The reasons for the global trade and circulation of this commodity money can be explained by the dynamics of supply and demand. On the supply side, the silver mines of Spanish America were the richest in the world and allowed for a voluminous and rising production of high-value bars and coins for several centuries. On the demand side, it is clear that silver (and gold) were long the most highly valued money commodities in ancien regime societies and economies since metallic currencies tended to be dominant as medium of exchange in a large range of transactions. In this regard, analysis of the extraordinary historical and geographical trajectories of the silver peso in the Americas, Europe, the Mideast and Asia between the sixteenth and early nineteenth centuries can elucidate important aspects of premodern processes of globalization.

In Spain, this resulted in the most painful episode in the history of the country’s “Gypsy” community: the general round-up carried out during the reign of Ferdinand VI, on July 30, 1749. The operation, which was as thorough as it was indiscriminate, led to the internment of ten to twelve thousand people, men and women, young and old, “simply because they were Gypsies.” The co-ordination of the different public authorities involved, the co-operation of the Church, which remained passive in the face of such injustice, the excesses committed by all those who made the operation possible, and the collaboration of the prisoners’ fellow citizens and neighbours made “Black Wednesday”, as the round-up is also called, an unchallenged event in the long history of European anti-“Gypsyism”. La revisión en dos espacios de tiempo nos muestra la forma en que se desarrolla el periodismo en Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, México, destacando la ausencia de la entrevista periodística como género, así como crónicas y artículos. A review of the printed daily newspapers reveals that gender and chronic or interview is limited, as the journalist focuses on the development of short news and opinion pieces. The review in two time slots shows how journalism is developed in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico, highlighting the absence of gender newspaper interview as well as reports and articles.

    UNIVERSIDAD PONTIFICIA COMILLAS Facultad de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales Grado en Relaciones Internacionales Trabajo Fin de Grado El papel del Rey en la política exterior de España durante la Transición Estudiante: Teresa Sáenz de Santa María Zubiría Director: Prof. Carlos López Gómez Madrid, junio 2018 RESUMEN Este trabajo trata sobre el papel del Rey Juan Carlos I en las relaciones internacionales de España durante la Transición española. La política exterior heredada del tardofranquismo y las funciones de Don Juan Carlos como Rey de España son Estudiadas como base para contextualizar la situación y el punto de salida en el que se encuentra España tras la muerte de Franco. Se estudia el impacto de la fiGura del monarca en la apertura exterior del país. Los viajes internacionales fueron un instrumento clave para dicha labor. En especial se destacan dos viajes, por un lado, el primero que realiza el Rey tras su proclamación, a Estados Unidos tras una para en la Republica Dominicana, siendo el primer rey español que visita el país norteamericano, y por otro, el último viaje previo a la Constitución Española de 1978, a México, con extensión a Perú y ArGentina. A través de ellos, el monarca manda un mensaje internacional sobre su visión de la nueva etapa y la apertura al exterior de España, posteriormente en México un mensaje de evolución y proGreso del país. El Rey fue fundamental para reforzar las relaciones con Estados Unidos y reconstruirlas con México creando un vínculo indudable con Latinoamérica.     Sierra Norte de Sevilla Greenway Mining deposits do not always mean desolate landscapes. Sometimes mining takes place in areas of outstanding natural beauty. This is the case of the Cerro del Hierro mining area, in the heart of the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Natural Park. Access to this area is now provided by the old railway line, recently developed by the Department of the Environment of the Regional Government of Andalusia. It follows a route through a surprisingly green landscape, given that we are in the province of Sevilla.
