The Scottish Event Campus (SEC) comprises SEC Centre, SEC Armadillo and The SSE Hydro. It is situated in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland’s cultural and commercial capital and is one of the UK’s largest integrated spaces, purpose-built for exhibitions, conferences and live entertainment. Capable of delivering events from 30 to well over 10,000, SEC Centre has infinite flexibility and includes main meeting hub, the Loch Suite. Combined with the 3,000 seat SEC Armadillo they offer 22,344m² of event space. A truly iconic structure, The SSE Hydro hosts national and international music mega stars as well as global entertainment and sporting events. With a capacity of 13,000, the venue stages around 140 events a year. There are now over 1,000 hotel rooms within a five minute walk of the campus and the neighbouring area of Finnieston is home to over 40 highly recommended bars and restaurants. The Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) is Scotland’s Economic and Social Forum. It is an independent membership network representing a cross-section of the private, public and social economy sectors in Scotland with an aim of influencing the agenda to ensure long- term sustainable economic growth and flourishing communities everywhere in Scotland. .

    Private vehicles are stealing public cities: land-use analysis across Glasgow and Dundee, Scotland Marli de Jongh Photo: Ross Sneddon on Unsplash SAGES policy internship working with Scotland’s Future Forum at the Scottish Parliament and the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI) Foreword This report was written prior to the Covid-19 global pandemic, which resulted in the lockdown of many countries worldwide including Scotland. During lockdown there was a global reduction in atmospheric air pollution as a result of the temporary shutdown of industry and lower demand of transport. In Edinburgh, NOx – a greenhouse gas (GHG) associated with emissions from road vehicles – reduced by 78 % on St John’s Road between the start of lockdown in March, and May (Wu and Carslaw., 2020). Similar dramatic decreases in nitrous oxides were recorded in other Scottish cities including Glasgow and Dundee. Moreover, further research during the pandemic identified a potential link between cities with higher amounts of air pollution and higher covid-19- related death tolls (Wu et al., 2020). This highlights the threat air pollution in cities – primarily caused by excessive car use – can have on human respiratory and cardiovascular health (Harrison and Beddows., 2017). During lockdown the need to prioritise space for pedestrians in cities has become more apparent as social distancing rules began. On 28 April, Scottish government announced a £10 million budget for pop-up active travel infrastructure, to be used during the pandemic to ensure physical distancing by widening pavements and cycle lanes. Such changes can be seen in cities across Scotland such as Kelvin Way in Glasgow which was completely closed to motor vehicles to allow for pedestrians and cyclists to exercise safely while keeping the mandatory 2m distance.

    Statement Regarding Updated ‘Bid_Convention Clearinghouse’ Document The undersigned Worldcons and bids for Worldcon include this joint statement with our responses to the ‘Bid_Convention Clearinghouse’ prepared for SMOFCon 37 in preparation for the “Fannish Inquisition/Question Time” event. 1. The number of questions included in the questionnaire increased from twenty-one (21) in prior years to seventy-one (71) questions in the current version, significantly increasing the workload to respond. 2. The notice of the new questionnaire was published by SMOFCon 37 on November 18, thirteen (13) days before the deadline to respond of December 1, 2019. The initial notice was sent to the list of the members of SMOFCon, and to the general SMOFs list. It was announced at that time that efforts to contact seated Worldcons and bids would take place afterwards, i.e., those who did not see the original announcement would have even less than 13 days to respond. 3. During this time, this was further problematised as over half of the standing chairs and bid chairs were attending an event in Chengdu (hosted by the Chengdu Bid Team) or taking part in extensive international travel during most of this time. Immediately following this was a national holiday in the USA. 4. In the spirit of fairness, we object to the fact that the format of the questionnaire was released in a manner that is completely inaccessible to one of the declared bids. Google Docs are not able to be accessed in China. 5. The attached submission represents the best effort that each Worldcon or Worldcon bid was able to coordinate in such a short time and with the understanding that all of us are volunteers.
