BIENVENUE Chers amis du cinéma français, It is my pleasure to invite you to the 12th edition of the Alliance Française French Film Festival in New Zealand. Under the passionate leadership of its very knowledgeable director, Dorothée Basel, and thanks to the hard work of a dedicated team as well as to the essential contribution of outstanding sponsors, the AFFFF has been ramping up from one year to the next, achieving yet again record box ofce attendance during the 2017 edition. Over 37,000 spectators turned this Festival into a great success, sharing a common interest, sometimes even a passion for our culture and language. I would personally like to thank you all for your ongoing support as it is your love of French cinema that enables the Festival to thrive and live on. With 37 movies brought to 13 cities across the country, this year’s Festival ofers a carefully crafted selection of the best recent releases from France and Francophone countries that tackle a variety of themes. I would like to mention some of the focuses for 2018 that particularly drew my attention. First, 2018 will be the year of women in cinema. OPENING NIGHT The audience of this year’s festival will be able to enjoy the works of some highly skilled and experienced women flm directors such as Agnès Varda (Faces Places), Claire Simon (The Graduation) or Anne Fontaine (Reinventing Marvin) but also rising talents including Léa Mysius (Ava) and Léonor Seraille (Montparnasse Bienvenüe) as well as brilliant C’est la vie! actresses like Marion Cotillard (Ismael’s Ghosts), Agnès Jaoui (Aurore) and Laetitia Dosch (Montparnasse Bienvenüe) to name but a few. “A carefully crafted character comedy, some hilarious slapstick and a cute love story or two.” Hollywood Reporter The arts will also be particularly present in 2018 with a flm selection that includes recent biopics like Gauguin and Rodin, but also Barbara, Dalida, and Redoubtable (depicting legendary flmmaker Jean-Luc Godard) which all celebrate some of France’s most iconic artists in their respective felds.
