FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vermont International Film Festival - May Monthly Screening For more information: CONTACT Orly Yadin Executive Director, VTIFF P 802.660.2600 E [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vermont International Film Festival - May Monthly Screening Burlington, VT: (June 19, 2018): VTIFF is pleased to announce the June film in its Monthly Screenings series. Thursday, June 28 at 7pm, Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center - Film House: THIS IS OUR LAND (CHEZ NOUS) VTIFF Presents: This Is Our Land (Chez nous) Host sponsor – Main Street Landing Directed by Lucas Belvaux France/Belgium | 2017 | Fiction | 114 min | French w/English subtitles A working-class single mother in the North of France naively agrees to run for mayor, representing the Patriotic Bloc. A drama that seeks to analyze the dangerous appeal of reactionary populism, This Is Our Land has attracted ire from the French far-right FN (Front National), which regards it as a slur on the party and its leader Marine Le Pen. Despite its provocative politics, the film is at heart a character study that’s near-Hitchcockian in its portrayal of an innocent, average woman (an attractive blond, no less) who gets caught up in a risky situation beyond her control and comprehension. The film’s key premise is that perfectly decent, compassionate people can all too easily – almost without realizing – fall under the spell of racist paranoia. With Catherine Jacob as the blonde-bobbed leader who never met an angry crowd she couldn’t make angrier. “A strong film about nationalism, politics, immigration and the changes faced by low income small towns in France and elsewhere. I went along for the ride and was rewarded with an ending that I did not expect.” ~ Julia Swift, VTIFF Programming Committee. Links to High res stills: vtiff.org/press .

AN ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT TO THE WASHINGTON POST wELCOmE TO FILmFEST DC 2017! Welcome to the 31st annual Washington, Dc international Film Festival. come see great movies! 80 fi lms • 45 countries • 11 days • 1 exciting festival For over 30 years, Filmfest DC has sought to keeP pace with global cultural and social activities. Today we fi nd ourselves in a conundrum of opposing beliefs and shifting governmental policies, which have often divided citizens and forged a culture of “us vs. them.” As a refl ection of our times, this year’s festival has taken on a special focus on issues ripped from today’s headlines in hopes of increasing clarity and civil discourse. Our Opening Night feature, This Is Our Land, looks at what can happen when a community faced with new immigrants and threatened job security becomes the target of right-wing operatives. The Justice Matters section of social issues fi lms has been expanded and this year we have added Division & Debate, a new section exploring timely contentious issues. The Lighter Side section of international comedies, Trust No One, our thriller and espionage section and the Global Rhythms music series continue to be festival staples, along with World View, the core of the festival’s international program. Filmfest DC would not be possible without the support of our Board of Directors, sponsors, staff, and hundreds of volunteers. Many people have generously shared their time and talent with us, and we want to deeply thank them. Good movies make the world a better place. Please join us for debut works by gifted directors, and a broad array of award-winning fi lms from around the globe.

We take our seats with a diverse group of people, switch off our phones, the light dims, and for a moment we wait in silent darkness for what is to come. If we do so without prejudice, without distraction and with an open heart, we can be entertained or confused, rattled or soothed, shaken or stirred by what is presented to us by the filmmakers. We experience their unique points of view, visions of the human universe that can move us emotionally and intellectually in many different ways. This open state of mind is embodied by Planet IFFR.

Through close reading and analysis of narrative strategies and cinematic techniques, I explore the ways in which this retrospective gaze presents an ethical critique of the Zionist enterprise. These works reexamine essential notions in Zionist ideology such as the ideal of the New Jew, the negation of the diaspora (shlilat ha-galut), the treatment of Middle-Eastern Jews, and the fate of the Palestinians.
