The Reinvestigation of Hoffman'sirobberg Cave - the Artefactual and Shellfish Assemblages, 2007 THE REINVESTIGATION OF HOFFMAN'SIROBBERG CAVE - THE ARTEFACTUAL AND SHELLFISH ASSEMBLAGES, 2007 KATHARINE KYRIACOU Thesis presented for the degree of Master of Philosophy In the Department of Archaeology University of Cape Town February 2009 Abstract This thesis documents the re-investigation of Hoffman' slRobberg Cave, a little known site located on the Robberg Peninsula near Plettenberg Bay on the southern Cape coast of South Africa Previous excavations carried out at the site early in the twentieth century and again in the late 1950s are scantily documented. Furthermore, a large collection derived from Hoffinan' s excavations, which I examined and catalogued in 2006, is only a selective sample of the archaeological remains from the site. Small-scale excavations were carried out at Hoffinan'slRobberg Cave in June/July 2007 with the dual objectives of documenting the stratigraphy of the Late Holocene deposits, and obtaining an unselected sample of material for analysis. The primary aim was to elucidate the lifeways of prehistoric hunter-gatherers living at the site for a short period during the Later Stone Age. The stratigraphy and chronology of the deposits indicate two episodes of occupation between 4000 and 3300 BP. Shellfish residues suggest exploitation patterns in keeping with the steep topography of the shore in the immediate vicinity of the cave. Changes in the size distributions of the most abundant limpet species, S. cochlear, are attributed to fluctuations in the intensity of human predation. A comparative sample from an open midden in Noetzie, Knysna, reflects slightly different exploitation patterns, as well as chronological changes in shellfish collection strategies which have been documented elsewhere. Changes in the size distributions of T. sarmaticus are probably also the result of human exploitation, and are consistent with changes observed at other sites along the southern Cape coast. The material cultural assemblages from Hoffinan'slRobberg Cave and the neighbouring site of Nelson Bay Cave reflect some cultural continuity in the production of certain types of artefacts during the post­ Wilton period. We clarify the stratigraphic integrity of SAM 42160 and confirm its Middle Stone 18 Age provenience. We find evidence that indicates the point was hafted and partially coated 19 in an adhesive substance. Internal fractures are consistent with stresses occasioned by high- 20 velocity, longitudinal impact. SAM 42160, like its roughly contemporaneous counterpart, 21 farther north at Sibudu Cave, likely functioned as a hafted arrowhead. There were 35 lottiid, one acmaeid, five nacellid and two patellid species from the western and northern Pacific; and 34 patellid, six nacellid and three lottiid species from the Atlantic, southern Africa, Antarctica and Australia. Emarginula foveolata fujitai (Fissurellidae) was used as the outgroup. In the resulting phylogenetic trees, the species fall into two major clades with high bootstrap support, designated here as (A) a clade of southern Tethyan origin consisting of superfamily Patelloidea and (B) a clade of tropical Tethyan origin consisting of the Acmaeoidea. Clades A and B were further divided into three and six subclades, respectively, which correspond with geographical distributions of species in the following genus or genera: (AÍ) north­ eastern Atlantic (Patella ); (A2) southern Africa and Australasia ( Scutellastra , Cymbula-and Helcion)', (A3) Antarctic, western Pacific, Australasia ( Nacella and Cellana); (BÍ) western to northwestern Pacific (.Patelloida); (B2) northern Pacific and northeastern Atlantic ( Lottia); (B3) northern Pacific (Lottia and Yayoiacmea); (B4) northwestern Pacific ( Nipponacmea); (B5) northern Pacific (Acmaea-’ânà Niveotectura) and (B6) northeastern Atlantic ( Tectura). Abstract Kalk Bay, South Africa, has a typical south coast zonation pattern with a band of seaweed dominating the mid-eulittoral and sandwiched between two molluscan- herbivore dominated upper and lower eulittoral zones. Encrusting coralline algae were very obvious features of these zones. The most abundant herbivores in the upper eulittoral were the limpet, Cymbula oculus (10.4 + 1.6 m-2; 201.65 + 32.68 g.m-2) and the false limpet, Siphonaria capensis (97.07 + 19.92 m-2; 77.93 + 16.02 g.m-2). The territorial gardening limpet, Scutellastra cochlear, dominated the lower eulittoral zone, achieving very high densities (545.27 + 84.35 m-2) and biomass (4630.17 + 556.13 g.m-2), and excluded all other herbivores and most seaweeds, except for its garden alga and the encrusting coralline alga, Spongities yendoi (35.93 + 2.26 % cover). For the upper eulittoral zone, only the chiton Acanthochiton garnoti 30.5 + 1.33 % and the limpet C.
