It is thus a distribution study, in line with others that have looked at the distribution of musical elements in Indonesia (Kunst 1939), the Philippines (Maceda 1998), Oceania (McLean 1979, 1994, 2014), and the region peripheral to the South China Sea (Revel 2013). With the exception of McLean, these studies have focused exclusively on material culture, namely musical instruments, tracing their geographical distribution and the vernacular terms associated with them. The aim has been to reveal cultural continuities and discontinuities and propose hypotheses about prehistoric settlement and culture contact in Insulindia and Oceania.

This raises questions about the ways in which non- Malays might engage with creating and performing ‘Malay music’, and how such endeavours are received more widely. This paper explores how such issues affected the Trio Komodo, a Florinese music group resident in the Riau Islands.

  • Accessing Accuracy of Structural Performance on Basic Steps in Recording Malay Zapin Dance Movement Using Motion Capture
    J. Appl. Environ. Biol. The need to protect this valuable asset is imperative as it reflects the uniqueness of our generation’s identity and portrays the human development of any community. Dance is arguably the most complex entity to decipher or captured in notation, in still or moving state, because of its kinaesthetic nature. Hence, this paper presents the study of several basic steps based on the structural performance in the Malay dance called Zapin besides accessing accuracy in recording the movement by using motion capture. Zapin is one of the oldest traditional dances fusing the Hadrahmaut Arab dance with Malay performance styles. The objective of the venture is to preserve Zapin focusing on the steps in correspondence with the dance motifs. The recording and simulation of the movement can be virtually re-enacted in 3 dimension (3D) using Motion Capture (MoCap) technology. This technology enables movements to be viewed and analyzed in 3D from 360 degrees, making it an easy reference for viewers to observe and learners to emulate the movements.

  • Common Injuries Identified in Malay Dance Farah Fadzali, April 2021
Soultari Amin Farid, Choreographer, Arts Educator and Researcher Common injuries identified in Malay Dance Farah Fadzali, April 2021 The traditional dance forms of the Malay communities in Singapore are wide-ranging and diverse: Zapin, Joget, Asli, and Inang are just some of the many examples amongst others. However, the underlying beauty of this traditional dance is a series of complex and dynamic footwork, performed repetitively to achieve pinpoint finesse in its execution. Together with the countless hours of practice, it places extremely high stress and strain on the dancer’s lower limbs like the foot and ankle. Along with dance practice lasting several hours a day, dancers often risk stress fractures and other overuse injuries. In this article, we will look at some common injuries identified in Malay dance. Zapin: Elegant, soft and subtle body movements. Joget: Performed on a quick tempo with duple and triple beat divisions while dancers make fast rhythmic hand and foot movements. Asli: Owing to its soft and gentle rhythm, Asli is a graceful dance form where every movement has a meaning. Inang: Inang is usually performed with grounded and graceful foot movements. Long scarves are also held in hands like props while performing, which add to the charm of this dance form. __________________________________________________________________________________________ Disclaimer: *SCAPE strongly recommends that you consult with your physician before executing any exercises. ISLA ---333 Proceeding of the Third International Seminar on Languages and Arts 2012012014201 444 Padang, October 17-18, 2014 CHARACTER BUILDING THROUGH TRADITIONAL DANCE AS DEVELOPING IDENTITY BELONGINGS: A STUDY OF INDONESIA-MALAYSIA Nerosti Adnan Faculty of Language and Art Universitas Negeri Padang [email protected] Abstract The tittle above shows that if a person learns a traditional dance of a specific community, they unconsciously learn about the culture and the moral values of the community too, which is beneficial to them. According to Hughes (2009), the learning process of traditional dance covers four different learning’s ethics: (1) discipline; (2) courtesy and respect; (3) socialize and not arrogant; (4) consistency and confidence. This four ethics can be analyzed in an integrated manner on the textual and contextual of a traditional dance. Among other things: dancing is actually a skill capability that will not be achieved without strong discipline to practice continuously. Salam hormatin the form of squat’s motion, both hands brought together in front of the chest or in the direction of the guest (organized into ten fingers) as initiating a traditional dance. This act is actually to educate the polite nature and mutual respect toward each other. Empirically, dance can be used as a medium of learning in the intimate and socialize formations. The beauty of dance itself can be achieved with simultaneous movement or uniform. Every motion that made by the whole body is the vision of the intellectual character’s build, discipline, art and spiritual, creative and fear of God. So that, the process that must be undertaken in learning a dance is not just memorizing the movement of the dance as a text, but the dancers need to keep planting the values of it in their life.

Kinzer iii University of Washington Abstract Bodies of Sound, Agents of Muslim Malayness: Malaysian Identity Politics and the Symbolic Ecology of the Gambus Lute Joseph M. Kinzer Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Christina Sunardi Music In this dissertation, I show how Malay-identified performing arts are used to fold in Malay Muslim identity into the urban milieu, not as an alternative to Kuala Lumpur’s contemporary cultural trajectory, but as an integrated part of it. I found this identity negotiation occurring through secular performance traditions of a particular instrument known as the gambus (lute), an Arabic instrument with strong ties to Malay history and trade. During my fieldwork, I discovered that the gambus in Malaysia is a potent symbol through which Malay Muslim identity is negotiated based on various local and transnational conceptions of Islamic modernity. My dissertation explores the material and virtual pathways that converge a number of historical, geographic, and socio-political sites—including the National Museum and the National Conservatory for the Arts, iv Culture, and Heritage—in my experiences studying the gambus and the wider transmission of muzik Melayu (Malay music) in urban Malaysia. I argue that the gambus complicates articulations of Malay identity through multiple agentic forces, including people (musicians, teachers, etc.), the gambus itself (its materials and iconicity), various governmental and non-governmental institutions, and wider oral, aural, and material transmission processes.

Al azhar Malayness in Riau; The study and revitalization of identity In: Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde, Riau in transition 153 (1997), no: 4, Leiden, 764- 773 This PDF-file was downloaded from http://www.kitlv-journals.nl Downloaded from Brill.com09/30/2021 03:26:27AM via free access AL AZHAR Malayness in Riau The Study and Revitalization of Identity In the province of Riau, to present oneself as 'a man from Riau', as one 'whose homeland is Riau', as 'a son of the Riau soil', or as 'a real native of Riau' in everyday conversations is not without a burden these days.1 In the presence of the powers-that-be, the above designations can easily be interpreted as a philosophical statement that expresses a desire to break away from the unity and oneness of the nation as defined by the state ideology. 'A son of the Riau soil': it sounds like an attempt to break with the wawasan nusantara, the vision of the archipelago as a political entity, which in New Order Indonesia is considered of such great importance that it has been made a compulsory subject in the curriculum of schools and universities. When stated in the presence of one or more so-called newcomers - those who may have been living in Riau for two generations - such a phrase may easily be understood as a rejection of their being in a particular area that was ordained to enter the map of the Indonesian Republic. Meanwhile, in the presence of people whose ancestors have been living in Riau from generation to generation, people, that is, who feel they are Riau Malays, the statement will most likely bring about more problems, for instance the formulation of an answer to the question: 'What kind of Malay are you?' In this respect, by the way, the people of East Timor and Irian Jaya are better off because they can state openly who they are, although therefore they recently had to put up with allegations of being wrong, 'not yet advanced' and narrow-minded, a frame of mind which then is immediately forgiven: they became a part of Indonesia much later.

Peoples, Place and Performing Arts of the Riau Islands Reviewer Prof. Dr. Jacqueline Pugh-Kitingan Margaret Kartomi, editor, 2019, Performing the Arts of Indonesia. Malay Identity and Politics in the Music, Dance and Theatre of the Riau Islands. Nordic Institute of Asian Studies, Studies in Asian Topics, no 68. Copenhagen: NIAS Press; xx-340 pp., ISBN: 978- 87-7694-259-5 Dispersed from the Straits of Malacca across the South China Sea, from Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore to west Kalimantan, the 2,408 Riau Islands or Kepri (Kepulauan Riau) comprise Indonesia’s largest province. For a millennia, these islands have formed linkages in trade routes between the Sumatra, Java, south western Borneo, Singapore, Malaya and beyond. The Riau Islands have a long and complex political history going back to at least the Srivijaya Empire (7th to 14th centuries). After Indonesia attained Independence in 1949, Riau experienced various national governments, each with their own policies of development and the arts. Following the end of Suharto’s authoritarian New Order era, which promoted the Javanisation of cultures throughout this vast nation, the Reformasi era saw communities and provinces looking back to their older traditions for inspiration in contemporary times. Riau was granted provincial autonomy in 2004. This book investigates today’s cultural situation in Riau, through focussing on the state of the performing arts of the main indigenous inhabitants of the Riau Islands—the Malays and the Orang Suku Laut (“sea peoples”). Much of the research for this book was conducted from 2012-2016 in Riau with the support of the Indonesian Institute of Science, and funded by a research grant from the Australia Research Council Discovery Projects Funding Scheme.
