Exchange Rate Used in the Report USD 1 = JPY 110 = VND 17,000 (Average Rate in 2008) PREFACE In response to the request from the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of Japan decided to conduct the Comprehensive Study on the Sustainable Development of Transport System in Vietnam (VITRANSS2) and entrusted the program to the Japan International cooperation Agency (JICA) JICA dispatched a team to Vietnam between November 2007 and May 2010, which was headed by Mr. IWATA Shizuo of ALMEC Corporation and consisted of ALMEC Corporation, Oriental Consultants Co., Ltd., and Nippon Koei Co., Ltd. In the cooperation with the Vietnamese Counterpart Team, the JICA Study Team conducted the study. It also held a series of discussions with the relevant officials of the Government of Vietnam. Upon returning to Japan, the Team duly finalized the study and delivered this report. I hope that this report will contribute to the sustainable development of transport system and Vietnam and to the enhancement of friendly relations between the two countries. Finally, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the officials of the Government of Vietnam for their close cooperation. -

Ho Chi Minh trail From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Hồ Chí Minh trail (also known in Vietnam as the "Trường Sơn trail") was a logistical system that ran from the Hồ Chí Minh Trail Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) to the Southeastern Laos Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) through the neighboring kingdoms of Laos and Cambodia. The system provided support, in the form of manpower and materiel, to the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam (called the Vietcong or "VC" by its opponents) and the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), or North Vietnamese Army, during the Vietnam War. It was named by the Americans after North Vietnamese president Hồ Chí Minh. ENDEMIC MALARIA IN LAO VILLAGES ENDEMIC MALARIA IN FOUR VILLAGES IN ATTAPEU PROVINCE, LAO PDR R Phetsouvanh1, I Vythilingam2, B Sivadong1, S Lokman Hakim2, ST Chan2 and S Phompida1 1Center for Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology, Vientiane, Lao PDR; 2Institute for Medical Research, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Abstract. A study was conducted in four villages in Attapeu Province, Lao PDR in 2002 to determine malaria endemicity. The study villages were Mixay, Beng Phoukham, Phou Vong and Pier Geo. Mass blood surveys were conducted in May, August, and October. Finger prick blood was collected for thick and thin blood film as well as for dipstick. The slide positivity rate was highest in Phou Hom in October (41.7%). Plasmodium falciparum was the dominant species comprising more than 80% of the cases. As a whole, the distribution of malaria was similar among males and females. Children below 15 years accounted for a large percentage of the cases. The sensitivity of the optimal dipstick was 62.36 and the specificity was 61.7. Microscopy was taken as the gold standard. Anopheles dirus was found to be the main vector and the vectorial capacity correlated well with the cases. INTRODUCTION entomological and blood examination 3 times during the year. A study was carried out in four malaria-endemic villages in Attapeu Province, in the southern region of Lao PDR. All-night human landing collections were carried out in May, August, and October 2002, to determine malaria vectors. At the same time, mass blood surveys were also carried out in the same villages. Anopheles dirus was the predominant species in three of the study villages. Sporozoites were found only in An. drius from Phou Hom. However, in Beng Phoukham, An. dirus was positive for oocysts. The distribution of malaria cases was highest in Phou Hom and this correlated well with the vectorial capacity of An. dirus. The risk for infection from An. dirus was also high, at 0.99. Internal Ex-Post Evaluation for Technical Cooperation Project conducted by Laos Office: August 2018 Country Name Project for Improving In-service Teacher Training for Science and Mathematics Lao People's Democratic Republic Education I. Project Outline As one of the top prioritized sectors in contributing to poverty reduction in Lao PDR, various efforts had been made in the education sector under the following three pillars: (1) improvement of equitable access; (2) improvement of quality and relevance; and (3) improvement of administration and management. Although the enrollment rate in the primary education had been improved, other indicators that are related to the quality of education, for example, repetition, dropout, and completion rates had not been improved as expected. With these backgrounds, the Education Sector Development Framework (ESDF) (2009-2015) placed an emphasis Background on the improvement of teachers’ quality by strengthening the capacity of in-service training. JICA supported the improvement of teacher education through the Project for Improving Science and Mathematics Teacher Training (SMATT) from 2004 to 2008, which aimed at improving quality of science and mathematics lecturers at teacher education institute (TEI). Training contents and learner-centered approaches of SMATT were recognized as relevant and useful for persons and organizations concerned. Recognizing these achievements and impacts of SMATT project, the Government of Lao PDR requested the continued support to enhance and expand the outputs of SMATT project to the school level. Through strengthening the mechanism and human resources and developing materials for improving lessons, the project aimed at improving quality of science and mathematics lessons in target schools, thereby improving quality of lessons in target provinces. -

Simulation of Supply/Demand Balance
The Study on Power Network System Master Plan in Lao PDR Draft Final Report (Stage 3) Simulation of Supply/Demand Balance 17.1. Options for Power Development Plan up to 2030 In order to examine supply reliability and supply-demand balance based on the Lao PDR’s development situation, and considering the development status of the country’s power supply facilities and transmission facilities, a simulation is conducted for 2030. Laos’s power system is examined up to 2030 considering the demand situation in the domestic system and the expansion plans for transmission lines. The northern and central 1 areas are put together to form a Laos NC system, the central 2 a Laos C system, and the southern part an S system. Based on the results of the supply/demand balance simulations, we make recommendations for power plant expansion plans and transmission lines, and for interconnections with neighboring countries.
