The only Association activity was the Church Parade held on the 6th February at St Bartholomew Anglican Parish Church, Burnley. Father David Patterson conducted the service which was attended by about 40 members of the Association and the 2/10 FD REGT Band. At the time of writing we have had only one Committee meeting so far this year and so a number of items are still to be decided. However, I can tell you that the format for Anzac Day will be similar to last year, depending upon any changes made by 2/10 FD REGT. A wreath will be laid at the dawn service held at the depot. Following the march, a gathering of Association members and other interested people will be held at the depot. The planning for this year’s Gunner Dinner is well advanced, and an invitation and replyform is printed in this edition of Cascabel. We had a good response last year, and we look forward to an even better one this year. I believe the Association’s decision to make the Gunner Dinner an all ranks function last year was well supported by the membership. The AGM is expected to be held at the Oakleigh RSL on the 10th Nov this year. The Annual Golf Day has been booked for the 11th Nov. Cleeman REG MORRELL (03) 9562 9552 28 Samada Street Notting Hill VIC 3168 6 Barrow Boy who made it to the Top David Simcock 11th Battalion AIF 11th Battalion AIF at the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt prior to leaving for Gallipoli Not many privates in the Australian Imperial Force would have a Colonel hold up the taking of an official group photograph while he climbed to the top position, but that's exactly what happened to Private David John Simcock in Egypt in 1915. David Simcock or "Pink Top" as he was better known, had so endeared himself to his fellow soldiers that the Colonel insisted he should climb up the pyramid at Cheops to be the highest point in the group of 740 troops from the 11th Battalion. He also warranted a 13-line reference in CEW Bean's Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-18. David Simcock had been born in Callington, South Australia, but moved to Perth in 1906 and established a fruit barrow business which proved to be incredibly popular and successful. He called himself "the little boy with the Pink Top" due to his bright red hair, and the name stuck. His outgoing nature and natural cheek and wit appealed to the Saturday night crowds that thronged the streets of Perth before World War I. His natural patter had people crowding round to buy his fruit, with many spilling out onto the road as they tried to get closer. Apart from his entertainment value, Pink Top always supplied top quality with his "bob a bag" fruit being snapped up by keen buyers. He was a shrewd businessman and soon established a shop in 7 Barrack Street between Murray and Wellington Streets. He continued to expand and had opened a second shop in Fremantle when World War I broke out. Never one to shirk his duty, he left his wife and his thriving business behind and at the age of 32 signed up with the AIF, travelling by ship to the Middle East. During training in Egypt the 11th Battalion posed for its historic photograph, using the pyramid at Cheops as its stage and once Pink Top had climbed up to take his place, the scene was recorded for posterity.

  • Letters from Long ‘Un
Letters from Long ‘un Captain Robert James Henderson, MC and Bar 13th Battalion AIF 1915-1918 Bob Henderson in France, winter 1917 Compiled by David Garred Jones 1 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This compilation arose out of a wider study into the movements, actions and stories of the “Originals” of the 13th Australian Infantry Battalion in World War 1. Part of that work involved reviewing the hundreds of diaries and thousands of letters that had been donated to the various State libraries and the Australian War Memorial. Much of this first-hand material is now available on-line, and in some cases has been transcribed by the skilled and dedicated staff of those institutions. Amongst that wealth of material are the letters of Captain Robert James Henderson, MC and Bar, of the 13th Battalion. They encapsulate the thoughts and feelings of a man who started in 1915 as a private, saw action in Gallipoli, Fleurbaix, Pozieres, Mouquet Farm, Messines, Passchendaele and Villers-Bretonneux, rising through the ranks to Captain. Henderson’s family donated his letters, postcards, certificates, awards and other ephemera to the Australian War Memorial (“AWM”). They have been digitised and posted on line under the accession code AWM2016.30.1 through to AWM2016.30.9. I am deeply grateful to the AWM for making this valuable historical archive so readily accessible. As well as Henderson’s own photographs, I have included some relevant images from the AWM and other sources, all of which are acknowledged in the captions to the photos. I have also added, in italics, the locations from where each letter was written (if not already included in the original letter).

RAAF Radschool Association Magazine – Vol 39 Page 12 Iroquois A2-1022 On Friday the 16th March, 2012, an Iroquois aircraft with RAAF serial number A2-1022, was ceremoniously dedicated at the Caloundra (Qld) RSL. Miraculously, it was the only fine day that the Sunshine Coast had had for weeks and it hasn't stopped raining since. It was suggested that the reason for this was because God was a 9Sqn Framie in a previous life. A2-1022 was one of the early B model Iroquois aircraft purchased and flown by the RAAF and in itself, was not all that special. The RAAF bought the B Models in 3 batches, the 300 series were delivered in 1962, the 700 series in 1963 and the 1000 series were delivered in 1964. A2- 1022 was of the third series and was just an Iroquois helicopter, an airframe with an engine, rotor, seats etc, much the same as all the other sixteen thousand or so that were built by the Bell helicopter company all those years ago – it was nothing out of the ordinary. So why did so many people give up their Friday to come and stand around in the hot sun for an hour or more just to see this one?? The reason they did was because there is quite a story associated with this particular aircraft and as is usually the case, the story is more about the people who flew it, flew in it and who fixed it – not about the aircraft itself. It belonged to 9 Squadron which arrived in Vietnam, in a roundabout route, in June 1966 with 8 of this type of aircraft and was given the task of providing tactical air transport support for the Australian Task Force.

The Minister of the Rockhampton Presbyterian Church, Rev Alexander Hay officiated. Mr James Ferguson was the senior partner in the firm Watson Ferguson and Company, booksellers, stationers and printers. The Ferguson family home was Abbotsford at Enoggera, a magnificent colonial home with wide verandahs on all sides. It was situated on a large property or “paddock” used for the Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Sabbath School annual picnic for many years. The cover photograph could well be such an occasion. In 1924 the land was subdivided and a portion of the house was moved to Gizeh Street. It is now called Hoya. Portion of the larger paddock is now called Ferguson Park, near Gaythorne Railway Station. Nine children were born to Mr and Mrs Ferguson. Three sons died in infancy. Of the other five sons, four enlisted for service abroad in the Great War and Eric Abbott Ferguson, the eldest, remained at home and continued his father’s business.

  • Honouring Harry Murray VC, 100 Years On
29 March 2017 Guy Barnett, Liberal Member for Lyons Honouring Harry Murray VC, 100 Years On A Tasmanian-born war hero – Australia’s most highly decorated soldier – was remembered today, with a centenary commemoration of his Victoria Cross. Lieutenant Colonel Harry Murray VC was born in Evandale, growing up on the family farm and serving as a young man in the Launceston Voluntary Artillery Corps. In the three and a half years from when he enlisted as a private at the outbreak of the First World War, he achieved the remarkable feat of rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was awarded many medals and mentions in dispatches. His greatest honour came in 1917 when he received the Victoria Cross – the highest decoration for bravery in the face of the enemy – for his actions at Guedecourt on the Western Front. For many years, the service of Lieutenant Colonel Murray VC and his significance to Tasmania’s rich military heritage was overlooked. Working as senator with the late David Von Stiglitz, the Murray Memorial Committee and the Evandale History Society, we ensured he will be remembered with the unveiling in 2006 of the Harry Murray Statue in the town of his birth. Today, it was a fitting tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Murray VC to have as guest speaker at the centenary service Doug Baird. Mr Baird is the father of the late Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG, Tasmania’s – and Australia’s – most recent recipient of the Victoria Cross. Corporal Baird was one of only two Australians to receive both a Victoria Cross and a Medal for Gallantry.

  • The Development of Australian Infantry on the Western Front 1916-1918: an Imperial Model of Training, Tactics and Technology
The Development of Australian Infantry on the Western Front 1916-1918: An Imperial model of training, tactics and technology Lewis Frederickson A thesis in fulfilment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Humanities and Social Sciences UNSW Canberra 28 August 2015 i THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname: Frederickson First Name: Lewis Other Name: Charles Abbreviation for degree as given in the University Calendar: PhD School: Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty: History Title: The development of Australian infantry on the Western Front 1916-1918 Abstract The Anzac myth enshrines a popular history of Australian superiority on the battlefields of the Great War. Australian infantrymen were superior because Australia was a frontier nation whose people possessed independent initiative, resourcefulness, and moral and physical courage. These qualities were transferred straight into the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). This thesis makes a critical examination of the myth. It details how Australian infantry on the Western Front developed into a highly disciplined and professional element of the wider British Army in the period from 1916-1918. This occurred through standardised training and tactics, hard earned operational experience, and with technically enabled mastery. After Gallipoli, Australia was a relative latecomer to Europe, and arrived in mid-1916. The force experienced comparable losses to the British Army on the Somme, becoming a benefactor of the British learning process. Contrary to the Anzac myth, the five Australian divisions on the Western Front only realised their potential in 1918 when they were amalgamated into a corps. In this thesis, Chapter 1 provides a historiography of the Australian infantry's experience on the Western Front in comparison to a similar sized formation, the Canadian Corps.
