The first meeting of the Interim Council, appointed under Preface the transitory provisions of the Act, was held in June of that year. The Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and the first professor took up duty early in 1960. By the .lfonash L'nircrsitrActl958, Monash Uni versity is a body politic and corporate, governed by a Council. The Monash University Council com prises a maximum of thirty-eight members either appointed or elected by various constituents so as to be broadly representative of all sections of the Uni versity and of the community it serves. The Chan cellor and the Deputy Chancellor arc elected by the CounciL which also appoints the Vice-Chancellor. professors and other members of the teaching and non-teaching stafl: The Council manages and supervises the affairs of the Univcrsitv and is advised by its subordinate standing con1111ittces. other boards and committees. the Vice-Chancellor. and senior officers of the Univcrsitv. The seven faculties are Arts, Econ~mics and Pol itics, Education, Engineering, Law. Medicine and Science. Each faculty is headed by a dean who is chairman of the faculty board and is responsible for exercising a general superintendence over the aca demic and administrative affairs of the faculty. All faculties except Education and Law arc sub divided into departments. The Professorial Board, through Council, is re sponsible for all academic matters relating to the University. The Vice-Chancellor is, ex-officio, chairman of the Board. Membership includes all professors, the University Librarian. the directors of some of the University's research and service centres, and representatives elected by non professorial teaching staff and students. The Committee of Deans is chaired bv the Vice Chancellor and comprises the deans of the seven faculties. and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor. The Committee advises the Vice-Chancellor on many aspects of University policy and management. The Vice-Chancellor is advised on the framing of the University's annual operating budget by the Central Budgets Committee. Responsibility for expenditure within faculties is delegated to deans. and similar delegation is made to heads of other budgetary areas. When teaching began at the University in 1961, there were ten professors and an enrolment of 363 undergraduates and graduate students. Enrolments increased rapidly and there are now 101 professors and a student population of about 14,000. The University site of some 100 hectares at Clayton is 20 km south-east from the city of Mel bourne. The University is not primarily a residen tial institution, but there are five halls of residence, some University-owned flats and an affiliated resi dential college which provide accommodation for students.

Linda Dessau AC, to celebrate both the 50th anniversary of the laying of the original Foundation Stone and a new beginning for the historic site at 300 Albert Street, East Melbourne. The Governor will join Elysa Anderson from our magnificent development partner Mirvac and myself for a special unveiling of the gold inscribed original marble foundation stone and the historic ceremonial silver trowel used to cement the stone into place. The celebration of this milestone comes at a time when the last section of the Dallas Brooks Hall is being demolished to make way for the site to become the home of our new Masonic Centre and The Eastbourne, a new residential project.
