DVAR TORAH BY RABBI METZGER [email protected] Why does Yosef ask for all the Egyptians to leave before revealing himself to his brothers? Why take five handpicked brothers to go before Pharaoh? Why did Yosef repeatedly tell the brothers to emphasize they were shepherds before they went to meet Pharaoh? If Pharaoh finds out that Yosef has a family who might be even half as capable as Yosef, he will never let them go, so Yosef is trying to protect his family. Despite everyone leaving, Pharaoh and his household still notice Yosef now has brothers. Yosef then aims for the second best option – them being shepherds who can leave after the famine. Rashi offers two explanations for why five brothers – because they were either the weakest or strongest looking. If they appeared weak that would dissuade Pharaoh from drafting them. Alternatively, if they appear strong, they could try to threaten Pharaoh to agree to the demands. Unfortunately, Pharaoh won’ let them leave. Rashi comments that when Yosef and his brothers go to Canaan to bury Yaakov they receive a full military escort ensuring their return. While the Egyptians and Pharaoh initially valued Bnei Yisrael, these feelings eventually turn to fear then hatred and slavery.

Weekly Halachah - ’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

May I cover my urn on Shabbat, to keep the water inside warm?

Our Sages were concerned that one who would try to keep food hot on Shabbat might become disappointed if the food wasn’t hot enough, and turn up the flame reflexively. Therefore, they instituted two rabbinic rules:  One may not wrap a vessel containing food or water on Shabbat, if this would preserve or increase the current level of heat;  One may not wrap a vessel containing food or water before Shabbat, if the heat of the food or water would increase.

Therefore, one may not wrap an electric urn in entirety before or on Shabbat; the water's heat increases on Shabbat, via the cumulative effect of the urn and its wrapping. However, one may wrap the urn and leave part of the urn exposed to the air. This also permits draping a cover in a way that is not be flush with the walls of the urn.

INCOME TAX RECEIPTS

BAYT is very appreciative of all the donations made throughout the year. For a 2020 tax receipt, all outstanding pledges must be paid in to the office no later than December 31st (cheques and cash at noon). Any new donations made until this time will be receipted to the full extent permitted. Thank you for your continued support! ANNOUNCEMENTS MEET OUR BOARD: WITH DAVID VODIANOI

My name is David Vodianoi and I’ originally from Haifa, Israel. We immigrated to Canada in 1968 and I’ll never forget seeing snow for the first time getting off the plane.

I am an architectural designer and contractor by trade and love what I do. I’ve been designing and building custom homes and renovations for the past 37 years mainly along the Bathurst corridor.

The BAYT has been a landmark in our family's life. It is the place where Shari and I one day approximately 28 years ago, decided to be adventurous and experience an Orthodox Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. This was at the BAYT and the beginning of our relationship with Ohr Samayach and Rabbi Avram Rothman. This special relationship helped us transition into an orthodox lifestyle and affect the direction of our family and future generations. Our 4 kids, thank ’d, are all happily married and have blessed us with beautiful grandkids. 3 of our kids got married at the BAYT and the 4th missed that opportunity due to Covid. The memorable Zoom backyard Chuppa and street festivities made this wedding a total gift from above and exceeded any possible expectations that we may have had.

We’ve been BAYT members for approximately 8 years and are proud and grateful to have Rabbi Korobkin as our Rav and thank him and his Rebbitzen for their guidance. I’ve been a board member since 2014 and currently am a member of the executive. It’s been a privilege to serve the community in various capacities and committees. I would have to say that my highlight to date has been co-chairing the renovation committee together with Jack Feintuch. Our main endeavour was putting together a team of professionals and embarking on a 2.5 million dollar building renovation project enhancing and beautifying our BAYT.

I look forward to continued strength and support of our community as we maneuver through challenging times. Can’t wait to see our BAYT buzzing again soon with the sound and sight of our community rejoicing together in celebration, Torah and tefilla.

THANK YOU TO THOSE SERVING IN THE IDF If you have children or grandchildren currently serving in the IDF please email [email protected] and we will add them to a list to be kept in mind during davening. Please send in their Hebrew name and their mother's Hebrew name. Thank You.

NEW REGISTRATION SYSTEM TO MINYANIM

The new system for signup is that registration for each day will open at 6 pm the evening before. You will need to register daily for the next day's minyanim. The link remains the same: https://www.bayt.ca/new-sign-up-link.html

Please be sure to login to your BAYT account to access the sign-up genius.

Please also keep in mind that by signing up, you are committing to be one of ten that are needed to make a minyan. Do NOT sign up if you're not sure if you will attend. By signing up, you are also committing to be on time and stay until the very last kaddish of each service.

To shorten davening times, Davening at Shacharis begins now at "YISHTABACH," except for the 6:30 am minyan, which cannot start any earlier due to times of dawn. Please recite Pesukei D'Zimra before coming to shul.

If you signed up and need to cancel the morning of the minyan, please either find your own replacement, or call Aaron Rosenberg at 647) 234-0696.

Most importantly: if you are feeling unwell for any reason, please do NOT come, even if this means that there won't be a minyan. Everyone's safety is more important than making the minyan.

Please Remember:  All siddurim and seforim in the Bais Medrash are currently not available to be used or removed from shelves.  As soon as the minyan has ended please exit the building as soon as possible to enable others in and the staff to clean . Wishing you a beautiful and healthy Shabbos, Rabbi Daniel Korobkin

D’VAR TORAH FOR PARSHAS VAYIGASH

In this week’s parsha, Parshat Vayigash, we read about Yehuda’s speech to Yosef after Yosef orders Binyamin to go to jail for taking Yosef’s cup. Yehu- da begs Yosef to let Yehuda stay in Egypt instead of Binyamin. He tells Yosef that Yaacov trusted him to take care of Binyamin and make sure nothing happens to him. Yaacov didn’t want to send Binyamin to Egypt, because he already lost Yosef, his favourite son, and Binyamin is now the only son left from Rachel. But Yaacov finally agreed to send Binyamin, because Yehuda promised to take care of him. Yehuda explained that if Binyamin doesn’t come home, Yaacov would die from being so sad. At this point, Yosef cannot control himself. He kicks everyone else out of the room and he starts to cry. He then tells the brothers that he is Yosef, their brother.

Why did Yosef reveal himself to his brothers at that point?

Yosef revealed himself to his brothers because he finally saw that they had done teshuva and they cared about their brothers. When Yosef lived with his brothers, they were very mean to him and were jealous of him, because he was Yaacov’s favourite son and Yaacov made him a special coat. They were so jealous that they were willing to throw him into a pit where he could have died, and they sold him as a slave. Now, 22 years later, when Yehuda gives his speech, Yosef sees how the brothers have changed. Yehuda is willing to risk himself to save Binyamin. The brothers are no longer jealous, even though Binyamin is Yaacov’s favourite son. That is why Yosef felt ready to reveal himself to the brothers.

Shabbat shalom.
