PROGRAMS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Many of you have told me that you appreciate the weekly message. I simply have not had time to prepare a message this week. Please forgive. Wishing everyone a Good Shabbos, Shabbat Shalom. Jeffrey Brown DVAR TORAH BY RABBI METZGER [email protected] Why does Yosef ask for all the Egyptians to leave before revealing himself to his brothers? Why take five handpicked brothers to go before Pharaoh? Why did Yosef repeatedly tell the brothers to emphasize they were shepherds before they went to meet Pharaoh? If Pharaoh finds out that Yosef has a family who might be even half as capable as Yosef, he will never let them go, so Yosef is trying to protect his family. Despite everyone leaving, Pharaoh and his household still notice Yosef now has brothers. Yosef then aims for the second best option – them being shepherds who can leave after the famine. Rashi offers two explanations for why five brothers – because they were either the weakest or strongest looking. If they appeared weak that would dissuade Pharaoh from drafting them. Alternatively, if they appear strong, they could try to threaten Pharaoh to agree to the demands. Unfortunately, Pharaoh won’t let them leave. Rashi comments that when Yosef and his brothers go to Canaan to bury Yaakov they receive a full military escort ensuring their return. While the Egyptians and Pharaoh initially valued Bnei Yisrael, these feelings eventually turn to fear then hatred and slavery. Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected] May I cover my urn on Shabbat, to keep the water inside warm? Our Sages were concerned that one who would try to keep food hot on Shabbat might become disappointed if the food wasn’t hot enough, and turn up the flame reflexively. Therefore, they instituted two rabbinic rules: One may not wrap a vessel containing food or water on Shabbat, if this would preserve or increase the current level of heat; One may not wrap a vessel containing food or water before Shabbat, if the heat of the food or water would increase. Therefore, one may not wrap an electric urn in entirety before or on Shabbat; the water's heat increases on Shabbat, via the cumulative effect of the urn and its wrapping. However, one may wrap the urn and leave part of the urn exposed to the air. This also permits draping a cover in a way that is not be flush with the walls of the urn. ANNOUNCEMENTS MEET OUR BOARD: WITH DAVID VODIANOI My name is David Vodianoi and I’m originally from Haifa, Israel. We immigrated to Canada in 1968 and I’ll never forget seeing snow for the first time getting off the plane. I am an architectural designer and contractor by trade and love what I do. I’ve been designing and building custom homes and renovations for the past 37 years mainly along the Bathurst corridor. The BAYT has been a landmark in our family's life. It is the place where Shari and I one day approximately 28 years ago, decided to be adventurous and experience an Orthodox Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. This was at the BAYT and the beginning of our relationship with Ohr Samayach and Rabbi Avram Rothman. This special relationship helped us transition into an orthodox lifestyle and affect the direction of our family and future generations. Our 4 kids, thank G’d, are all happily married and have blessed us with beautiful grandkids. 3 of our kids got married at the BAYT and the 4th missed that opportunity due to Covid.
