The only other cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants were Biratnagar, Birgunj, Lalitpur, and Pokhara. Independence: In 1768 Prithvi Narayan Shah unified a number of states in the Kathmandu Valley under the Kingdom of Gorkha. Nepal recognizes National Unity Day (January 11) to commemorate this achievement. Public Holidays: Numerous holidays and religious festivals are observed in particular regions and by particular religions. Holiday dates also may vary by year and locality as a result of the multiple calendars in use—including two solar and three lunar calendars—and different astrological calculations by religious authorities. In fact, holidays may not be observed if religious authorities deem the date to be inauspicious for a specific year. Geography: Nepal is a landlocked country, surrounded by India on three sides and by China's Tibet Autonomous Region to the north. The shape of the country is rectangular with a width of about 650 kilometres and a length of about 200 kilometers. The total landmass is 147,181 square kilometres. Nepal is dependent on India for transit facilities and access to the sea. All the goods and raw materials arrive into Nepal from the Bay of Bengal and through Kolkata. Though small in size, Nepal contains great diversity in landscape. The south of Nepal, which borders India, is flat and known locally as Terai. The Terai is situated about 300 meters above sea level. The landscape then dramatically changes to mid-hills of over 1000 meters and reaches as high as 8000 meters with the Himalayas in the north bordering China. This rise in elevation is punctuated by valleys situated between mountain ranges. Within this maze of mountains, hills, ridges, and low valleys, changes in altitude have resulted in great ecological variations and have given rise to many different cultures, traditions, and languages. -

Road network of Nepal is categorized into the strategic road network (SRN), which comprises of highways and feeder roads, and the local road network (LRN), comprising of district roads and Urban roads. Nepal’s road network consists of about 64,500 km of roads. Of these, about 13,500 km belong to the SRN, the core network of national highways and feeder roads connecting district headquarters. (Picture : Nepal Road Standard 2070) The network density is low, at 14 kms per 100 km2 and 0.9 km per 1,000 people. 60% of the road network is concentrated in the lowland (Terai) areas. A Department of Roads (DoR’s) survey shows that 50% of the population of the hill areas still must walk two hours to reach an SRN road. PRELIMINARY WEATHER SUMMARY OF NEPAL May 2018 Note: This weather summary is based on daily data of 38 meteorological stations established by Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. MAIN HIGHLIGHT Most parts of the country recorded normal to above normal rainfall and normal to below normal temperature (Fig.2 and Fig.4). SYNOPTIC SEQUENCES An east-west trough extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level ran from northwest Rajasthan to Manipur across the cyclonic circulations (CC) over Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal and Assam and Meghalaya on 2nd May 2018 and a western disturbance (WD) spurred wide spread rainfall covering whole Nepal on 3rd May. The trough became less marked on 3rd May however these circulation continued to bring significant amount of rainfall during 1st week. North-south trough roughly along Long. 88°E to the north of Lat.24°N and CC over Bihar with trough at 1.5km from Bihar to Odisha along with a WD contributed well distributed rainfall over Nepal during 9th, 10th and 11th May. These systems became less marked by 11th May. A trough ran from the cyclonic circulation over south Haryana to Nagaland across north Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Meghalaya and extended up to 1.5 km above sea level on 13th and became less marked on 14th. The trough and a WD as CC over Jammu and Kashmir and trough aloft with its axis at 5.8km above sea level influenced rainfall that covered whole Nepal on 14th May and eastern Nepal on 15th.
