TranscUlturAl, vol. 6.1 (2014), 70-83. http://ejournals.library.ualberta.ca/index.php/TC Conflicts of Interest, Culture Jamming and Subversive (S)ignifications: The High Fashion Logo as Locational Hip Hop Articulation Rebecca Halliday York University In the fall of 2012, an unheard of fashion label called “Conflict of Interest NYC” (C.O.I.) released three black and white, unisex t-shirts for sale online. Each t-shirt took the brand name and/or logo of a storied fashion house – Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Givenchy – and imposed a set of urban and sexualized representations and hip hop references to enact a high-end-low-end subversion of the brand’s connotations. The t-shirts came to public attention after Internet “street style” photographer Tommy Ton captured New York fashion editor Shiona Turini wearing a BALLINCIAGA t-shirt on the street at London Fashion Week and posted it on Condé Nast Media’s fashion bible Style.com. This article contextualizes the t-shirts within historical interactions between fashion and hip hop culture and reads the BALLINCIAGA t-shirt for its intertextual connections to hip hop and black oral tradition.1 In this sense, my analysis constitutes a “translation” of and between sets of cultural “codes” (Hall 21): in this instance, a translation of fashion brand names and subcultural references. Conflict of Interest’s t-shirts present a sophisticated incidence of culture jamming that parodies high fashion brands through hip hop references; it thus criticizes high fashion’s historical Eurocentric elitism and articulates urban conditions. While the t-shirts were not created as an explicit political protest, they are indeed subversive, and their creation and proliferation from within fashion illuminates the politics of fashion’s cultural appropriations and socioeconomic identities. -

Taking Intellectual Property into Their Own Hands Amy Adler* & Jeanne C. Fromer** When we think about people seeking relief for infringement of their intellectual property rights under copyright and trademark laws, we typically assume they will operate within an overtly legal scheme. By contrast, creators of works that lie outside the subject matter, or at least outside the heartland, of intellectual property law often remedy copying of their works by asserting extralegal norms within their own tight-knit communities. In recent years, however, there has been a growing third category of relief-seekers: those taking intellectual property into their own hands, seeking relief outside the legal system for copying of works that fall well within the heartland of copyright or trademark laws, such as visual art, music, and fashion. They exercise intellectual property self-help in a constellation of ways. Most frequently, they use shaming, principally through social media or a similar platform, to call out perceived misappropriations. Other times, they reappropriate perceived misappropriations, therein generating new creative works. This Article identifies, illustrates, and analyzes this phenomenon using a diverse array of recent examples. Aggrieved creators can use self-help of the sorts we describe to accomplish much of what they hope to derive from successful infringement litigation: collect monetary damages, stop the appropriation, insist on attribution of their work, and correct potential misattributions of a misappropriation. We evaluate the benefits and demerits of intellectual property self-help as compared with more traditional intellectual property enforcement. Contact: [email protected] Mask On: How Fashion Erased the Politics of Streetwear in 2017 By Frances Sola-Santiago Hip-hop culture dominated the fashion zeitgeist in 2017. From a Louis Vuitton and Supreme collaboration to Gucci’s support of Harlem designer Dapper Dan’s store reopening, the fashion industry welcomed Black culture into the highest echelons of high fashion. Rapper Cardi B became the darling of New York Fashion Week in September after being rejected by designers throughout most of her career. Marc Jacobs traded the runway for the street, staging a show that included bucket hats, oversized jackets, and loads of corduroy on a large number of models of color. But while the industry appeared to diversify by acknowledging the indomitable force of hip-hop culture, it truly didn’t. The politics of hip-hop and Black culture were left out of the conversation and the players behind-the-scenes remained a homogeneous mass of privileged white Westerners. Nearly every high fashion brand this year capitalized on streetwear— a style of clothing born out of hip-hop culture in marginalized neighborhoods of New York City and Los Angeles, and none recognized the historical, cultural, and political heritage that made streetwear a worldwide phenomenon, symbolizing power and cool. -

Moncell Durden., Assistant Professor of Practice University of Southern California Glorya Kaufman School of Dance Introduction Hip-hop dance has become one of the most popular forms of dance expression in the world. The explosion of hip-hop movement and culture in the 1980s provided unprecedented opportunities to inner-city youth to gain a different access to the “American” dream; some companies saw the value in using this new art form to market their products for commercial and consumer growth. This explosion also aided in an early downfall of hip-hop’s first dance form, breaking. The form would rise again a decade later with a vengeance, bringing older breakers out of retirement and pushing new generations to develop the technical acuity to extraordinary levels of artistic corporeal genius. We will begin with hip-hop’s arduous beginnings. Born and raised on the sidewalks and playgrounds of New York’s asphalt jungle, this youthful energy that became known as hip-hop emerged from aspects of cultural expressions that survived political abandonment, economic struggles, environmental turmoil and gang activity. These living conditions can be attributed to high unemployment, exceptionally organized drug distribution, corrupt police departments, a failed fire department response system, and Robert Moses’ building of the Cross-Bronx Expressway, which caused middle and upper-class residents to migrate North. The South Bronx lost 600,000 jobs and displaced more than 5,000 families. Between 1973 and 1977, and more than 30,000 fires were set in the South Bronx, which gave rise to the phrase “The Bronx is Burning.” This marginalized the black and Latino communities and left the youth feeling unrepresented, and hip-hop gave restless inner-city kids a voice. -

The project consisted of a training course for youth workers, educators, teachers and trainers implemented in May 2019 in Zakopane, Poland and follow up phase and was designed as an answer for missing debates and regular talks between the various group on the topics of gender equality, gender-based discrimination and violence. The training became the space to explore, discuss and create using applied drama techniques and mainly Forum Theatre elements. Together with 26 participants, including trainers, we were working on case studies from our countries, media releases and much more. Looking at Los Angeles in the 1980s and early 1990s, I examine the rise of multiculturalism and neoliberalism within the US as it parallels the rise and commercialization of hip hop music sub-genre, gangsta rap. By examining the multicultural neoliberal state, and its consequences for communities of color, I look at the ways in which Black/Asian American racialization occurred through the tropes of the gangster and the model minority, respectively. Moreover, I contend that the multicultural neoliberal state relied on popular constructions of Asianness and Blackness in order to maintain whiteness, conceal state-violences, and define its national borders of inclusion and exclusion, and gangsta rap provided an ideal space for this. My project also explores progressive rap and the ways in which it ii manifested from the same conditions of gangsta rap, yet managed to produce itself differently. Lastly, I conclude with a close examination of the hip hop duo Blue Scholars (featuring Asian American emcee Prometheus Brown) and their song, “Morning of America,” which addresses and challenges this particular moment of the 1980s through the lens of the colonized subject and racialized other. -

“Raising Hell”—Run-DMC (1986) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Bill Adler (guest post)* Album cover Label Run-DMC Released in May of 1986, “Raising Hell” is to Run-DMC what “Sgt. Pepper’s” is to the Beatles--the pinnacle of their recorded achievements. The trio--Run, DMC, and Jam Master Jay--had entered the album arena just two years earlier with an eponymous effort that was likewise earth-shakingly Beatlesque. Just as “Meet the Beatles” had introduced a new group, a new sound, a new language, a new look, and a new attitude all at once, so “Run-DMC” divided the history of hip-hop into Before-Run-DMC and After-Run-DMC. Of course, the only pressure on Run-DMC at the very beginning was self-imposed. They were the young guns then, nothing to lose and the world to gain. By the time of “Raising Hell,” they were monarchs, having anointed themselves the Kings of Rock in the title of their second album. And no one was more keenly aware of the challenge facing them in ’86 than the guys themselves. Just a year earlier, LL Cool J, another rapper from Queens, younger than his role models, had released his debut album to great acclaim. Run couldn’t help but notice. “All I saw on TV and all I heard on the radio was LL Cool J,” he recalls, “Oh my god! It was like I was Richard Pryor and he was Eddie Murphy!” Happily, the crew was girded for battle. Run-DMC’s first two albums had succeeded as albums, not just a collection of singles--a plan put into effect by Larry Smith, who produced those recordings with Russell Simmons, the group’s manager. -

How about a used pair of the Air Yeezy 2s for $4,600? (“Air Yeezy 2 Solar Red”). I hope you’re a size 13. As absurd as that price tag sounds, these are not just a pair of expensive shoes. That’s because the Air Yeezy 2 is rapper Kanye West’s second collaboration with the sneaker brand Nike and is a perfect example of how popular the collaborations between hip-hop figures and shoe compa- nies are. Although it was once unusual for hip-hop artists to negotiate a deal to brand and design sneakers, such joint efforts have resulted in some of the most coveted and highly-priced shoes in the world.
