Warren Buffett's Wild Ride at Salomon (Fortune, 1997)
Warren Buffett's Wild Ride at Salomon (Fortune, 1997) Warren Buffett, interim chairman of Solomon Brothers, Inc., gestures during testimony before a House Commerce subcommittee on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., Sept. 5, 1991. Photograph by Marcy Nighswander — AP Photos By CAROL J. LOOMIS October 27, 1997 As Sanford I. Weill, 64, the dealmaking CEO of Travelers Group, steps up to his biggest acquisition ever—the purchase of Salomon Inc. for $9 billion—a famous Wall Street figure, Warren E.Buffett, 67, steps out of Salomon. His days there began almost precisely a decade ago, in the early fall of 1987, when his company, Berkshire Hathaway, became Salomon‘s largest shareholder and he moved in as a director. But that was training-wheels stuff, nothing to the high- wire unicycle act that came later: Buffett was physically, emotionally, and really at Salomon for nine months in 1991 and 1992, when the firm’s trading illegalities created a giant sucking sound that brought him in to run the place. Though much has been written about Buffett and Salomon, a lot of what you will read here will be new. I have been a friend of Buffett‘s for about 30 years and have long been a shareholder of Berkshire (though never a shareholder of Salomon). As a friend, I do some editing every year on Buffett‘s well-known annual report, and we have for eons talked about collaborating on a book about his business life. All this has given me many opportunities to learn Buffett‘s thinking. Some of what I’ve gleaned has ended up in FORTUNE stories that I wrote, most especially in an April 11, 1988, article, “The Inside Story of Warren Buffett,” and in an accompanying box, “The Wisdom of Salomon?” But much of what I learned about Buffett‘s experiences at Salomon in 1991 was confidential, embargoed by him because Salomon was both struggling to regain its footing and dealing with big legal problems. -
UNIVERSITY of CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Rice and Rap: Hip Hop
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Rice and Rap: Hip Hop Music, Black/Asian American Racialization, and the Role of the U.S. Multicultural Neoliberal State A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Asian American Studies by Michelle Mihwa Chang 2015 © Copyright by Michelle Mihwa Chang 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Rice and Rap: Hip Hop Music, Black/Asian American Racialization, and the Role of the U.S. Multicultural Neoliberal State by Michelle Mihwa Chang Master of Arts in Asian American Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Kyungwon Hong, Chair This paper explores Black and Asian American racialization within the multicultural neoliberal state. Looking at Los Angeles in the 1980s and early 1990s, I examine the rise of multiculturalism and neoliberalism within the US as it parallels the rise and commercialization of hip hop music sub-genre, gangsta rap. By examining the multicultural neoliberal state, and its consequences for communities of color, I look at the ways in which Black/Asian American racialization occurred through the tropes of the gangster and the model minority, respectively. Moreover, I contend that the multicultural neoliberal state relied on popular constructions of Asianness and Blackness in order to maintain whiteness, conceal state-violences, and define its national borders of inclusion and exclusion, and gangsta rap provided an ideal space for this. My project also explores progressive rap and the ways in which it ii manifested from the same conditions of gangsta rap, yet managed to produce itself differently. Lastly, I conclude with a close examination of the hip hop duo Blue Scholars (featuring Asian American emcee Prometheus Brown) and their song, “Morning of America,” which addresses and challenges this particular moment of the 1980s through the lens of the colonized subject and racialized other. -
“Raising Hell”—Run-DMC (1986) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Bill Adler (Guest Post)*
“Raising Hell”—Run-DMC (1986) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Bill Adler (guest post)* Album cover Label Run-DMC Released in May of 1986, “Raising Hell” is to Run-DMC what “Sgt. Pepper’s” is to the Beatles--the pinnacle of their recorded achievements. The trio--Run, DMC, and Jam Master Jay--had entered the album arena just two years earlier with an eponymous effort that was likewise earth-shakingly Beatlesque. Just as “Meet the Beatles” had introduced a new group, a new sound, a new language, a new look, and a new attitude all at once, so “Run-DMC” divided the history of hip-hop into Before-Run-DMC and After-Run-DMC. Of course, the only pressure on Run-DMC at the very beginning was self-imposed. They were the young guns then, nothing to lose and the world to gain. By the time of “Raising Hell,” they were monarchs, having anointed themselves the Kings of Rock in the title of their second album. And no one was more keenly aware of the challenge facing them in ’86 than the guys themselves. Just a year earlier, LL Cool J, another rapper from Queens, younger than his role models, had released his debut album to great acclaim. Run couldn’t help but notice. “All I saw on TV and all I heard on the radio was LL Cool J,” he recalls, “Oh my god! It was like I was Richard Pryor and he was Eddie Murphy!” Happily, the crew was girded for battle. Run-DMC’s first two albums had succeeded as albums, not just a collection of singles--a plan put into effect by Larry Smith, who produced those recordings with Russell Simmons, the group’s manager. -

How about a used pair of the Air Yeezy 2s for $4,600? (“Air Yeezy 2 Solar Red”). I hope you’re a size 13. As absurd as that price tag sounds, these are not just a pair of expensive shoes. That’s because the Air Yeezy 2 is rapper Kanye West’s second collaboration with the sneaker brand Nike and is a perfect example of how popular the collaborations between hip-hop figures and shoe compa- nies are. Although it was once unusual for hip-hop artists to negotiate a deal to brand and design sneakers, such joint efforts have resulted in some of the most coveted and highly-priced shoes in the world. “I Know That We the New Slaves”: an Illusion of Life Analysis of Kanye West’S Yeezus
1 “I KNOW THAT WE THE NEW SLAVES”: AN ILLUSION OF LIFE ANALYSIS OF KANYE WEST’S YEEZUS A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS BY MARGARET A. PARSON DR. KRISTEN MCCAULIFF - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2017 2 ABSTRACT THESIS: “I Know That We the New Slaves”: An Illusion of Life Analysis of Kanye West’s Yeezus. STUDENT: Margaret Parson DEGREE: Master of Arts COLLEGE: College of Communication Information and Media DATE: May 2017 PAGES: 108 This work utilizes an Illusion of Life method, developed by Sellnow and Sellnow (2001) to analyze the 2013 album Yeezus by Kanye West. Through analyzing the lyrics of the album, several major arguments are made. First, Kanye West’s album Yeezus creates a new ethos to describe what it means to be a Black man in the United States. Additionally, West discusses race when looking at Black history as the foundation for this new ethos, through examples such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nina Simone’s rhetoric, references to racist cartoons and movies, and discussion of historical events such as apartheid. West also depicts race through lyrics about the imagined Black male experience in terms of education and capitalism. Second, the score of the album is ultimately categorized and charted according to the structures proposed by Sellnow and Sellnow (2001). Ultimately, I argue that Yeezus presents several unique sounds and emotions, as well as perceptions on Black life in America. 3 Table of Contents Chapter One -

A metallic finish is added to the Fairway Green heel tab on this white leather Adidas Stan Smith Sale, which is actually part of a "Metallics" pack of adidas Originals models exclusive to the ladies. The Adidas Stan Smith Men "Tennis Pack II" releases on October 31st. The collection features the honored Stan Smith silhouette in three different renditions of white, orange, and tennis ball green, with each pair sporting a fuzzy felt material set to mimic the little balls used in the sport. In addition to the official unveiling of the shoe, adidas confirms another Pharrell x adidas collaborative capsule for later this year (December 1st to be specific). It's hard to figure out who is having a bigger year, Pharrell Williams or adidas Originals, but given the two separate fields of music and footwear the comparison is a little difficult for a clear cut winner. Regardless, the resurgence of both the producer and the Three Stripes lifestyle brand seemed like a perfect pairing for a collaborative effort so they made it happen atop the Adidas Stan Smith Cheap. First there was the adidas Consortium "Solid Pack" featuring three monochrome leather finishes and now the pair returns with a felt construction to match that of a tennis ball.
