The Club of the Year Award recognises clubs that excel in administration, sporting excellence, outstanding service to members and the promotion and development of their sport.
65 Club of the Year 2013
The Boat Club
In 2013 the Boat club continued to be an active and successful sporting club. The Boat Club met all audit requirements, worked closely with ANU Sport staff, responded positively and effectively to all feedback, had members appointed to various committees locally and nationally and had a strong representation at University Games and regattas.
The Club ran a very successful introduction to Rowing program in the first semester to introduce the sport to members of the ANU Community who have never rowed before. Forty five people participated in the course and thirty two (71%) of this group converted to full annual memberships of the club at the conclusion of the program. Seven of those who completed the program progressed all the way to competing at the 2013 Australian University Games.
The club held successful market day stalls in O-week and Bush Week to attract students new to the sport as well as those with some experience. The club communicated effectively through newsletters, email mailing lists, their website and a member’s Facebook page as well as a public Facebook page. They undertook a major revision of the club’s social media presence, realising the importance of being active across multiple social media avenues. The club’s website is connected to both the ANU Sport and the ACT Rowing websites.
Club members participated in regular working bees to clean and continue to improve the boat shed. They retained their high quality coaches for all squads and competed successfully at the Australian, NSW and ACT Championship regattas. The club also competed in the Head of the Yarra, Australian University Games as well as some members competing in the World Junior Rowing Championships and the World Masters Games.
